In 2010 Pakistan experienced the worst floods recorded in its history;millions of people were affected and thousands lost their lives. Nutrition assessment surveys led by UNICEF were conducted in flood-affected areas of Punjab and Sindh provinces to assess the nutrition status of children between 659 months while Aga Khan University (AKU) undertook a parallel assessment including micronutrient status in their project areas within Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab. Standardised Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition (SMART) methodology was used. 881 children from Sindh, 1,143 from Punjab and 817 from AKU project areas were measured for anthropometry and their households were interviewed. The findings indicated that while immediate life-saving interventions were essential, there was also an urgent need to address chronic malnutrition. Through high-level dissemination of the survey results, treatment and prevention of malnutrition has become a priority for the provincial and federal government in Pakistan and for donors.

Analysis of Phase Transition in Traffic Flow based on a New Model of Driving Decision

Different driving decisions will cause different processes of phase transition in traffic flow. To reveal the inner mechanism, this paper built a new cellular automaton （CA） model, based on the driving decision （DD）. In the DD model, a driver＇s decision is divided into three stages： decision-making, action, and result. The acceleration is taken as a decision variable and three core factors, i.e. distance between adjacent vehicles, their own velocity, and the preceding vehicle＇s velocity, are considered. Simulation results show that the DD model can simulate the synchronized flow effectively and describe the phase transition in traffic flow well. Further analyses illustrate that various density will cause the phase transition and the random probability will impact the process. Compared with the traditional NaSch model, the DD model considered the preceding vehicle＇s velocity, the deceleration limitation, and a safe distance, so it can depict closer to the driver preferences on pursuing safety, stability and fuel-saving and has strong theoretical innovation for future studies.

This paper reports on the peer-to-peer (P2P) live streaming service of the regional rounds of NHK National School Chorus Contest, which was held in August and September in 2010. To comply with many requirements from families of contestants in regional rounds, NHK started broadcasting regional contests live through the Internet using proprietary P2P broadcasting systems. The live streams attracted a total of 58,512 viewers nationwide during their entire schedules.

The key of the drivers' behaviors are their driving decisions. To reveal the decision-making process, a new model with consideration of the deceleration limitation (DL) was built, based on a cellular automata (CA) model. In the DL model, the driver's decision was divided into three steps: decision-making, action and result. And the acceleration was taken as a decision variable and also two other core factors, i.e. distance between adjacent vehicles and their own velocity, were considered. Simulation results show that the DL model can simulate the interaction between vehicles realistically and describe the phase transition of traffic flow well. Further analyses illustrate that the density's change can cause the critical phase transition in traffic flow. These findings have effectively reproduced some realistic phenomenon and will help reduce the traffic congestion. © 2011 ASCE.

The Rolling Wheel Deflectometer (RWD), which measures pavement surface deflection at traffic speed, offers the potential to characterize the structural conditions of the road network without major delays and in a cost-effective way. The objective of this study was to evaluate the repeatability of RWD deflections and to determine the effects of test speed and pavement conditions on the measured deflections. To achieve this objective, 16 different test sites representing a wide array of pavement conditions were tested. Results of the field testing program determined that the repeatability of RWD measurements was acceptable with an average coefficient of variation of 14% at a testing speed of 32 km/h. The influence of testing speed on the measured deflections was minimal. Since the test speed is restricted by the posted speed limit, testing can be conducted at different speeds while allowing for direct comparison of the measured deflections. RWD deflection measurements appear to properly reflect pavement conditions and structural integrity of the road network by providing for a greater average deflection and scattering for sites in poor conditions. © 2011 ASCE.

The construction and development of "two-oriented society" in Wuhan city circle should be combined with the development of colleges and universities in the region. It's necessary to update the concept and evaluate the development status and problems existing in the interaction between urban communities and universities. It's recommended that the winwin situation, interactive and common development concept and strategies should be established to ensure the healthy and sustainable development of both sides. On the basis of investigation, the following suggestions are derived: 1) direct and coordinate the development of both sides based on the principle of interaction and win-win situation 2) strengthen the cultural interaction and focus on building the harmonious culture of city circle;3) establish the "two-oriented society" subjects and cultivate the innovative talents;4) reform and explore the forms and approaches of social service for universities;5)establish the appropriate management mechanisms, including interaction base, resource-sharing mechanism, and so on. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper is dealing with redundant optoelectronic data transmission with special respect to laser channels. The concept of the generalized erasure channel (GEC) is used to determine the probability of undetected error for some binary symmetric and non-symmetric channels protected by appropriate codes. In detail, communication via different binary symmetric channels (BSCs), generalized erasure channels and symmetrized binary non symmetric channels (BNSCs) is investigated. Simple upper bounds are given, relating the new formulas to that one of the BSC Finally the results in connection with an inequality for proper codes are applied to multi wavelength optical transmission through channels generated by semiconductor lasers.

Background: The histamine H₂ receptor antagonist ranitidine is US FDA-approved for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and healing of erosive esophagitis in children ≥1 month of age. A low-dose strength of ranitidine is now available in a citrus-flavored 25mg effervescent tablet (dissolved in 5mL of water);this formulation was developed to facilitate use in infants and smaller children. Ranitidine syrup is available in a peppermint-flavored 15 mg/mL formulation. Objective: To compare taste preferences for ranitidine (Zantac®) syrup and ranitidine effervescent tablets dissolved in water (Zantac® EFFERdose®) in healthy children aged 4-8 years and their adult caregivers. Study Design and Methods: A randomized, single-blind, crossover, taste test trial was conducted in 102 children and 102 parents/legal guardians. All subjects received a single 45mg dose of each formulation. After tasting both preparations children were asked: "Now that you have tasted both medicines, which one of these medicines do you think tastes better?" Adults were asked four questions to assess whether they would administer the medication to the children. Results: Seventy-one percent (72/102) of the children preferred the taste of the ranitidine effervescent tablets compared with 29% (30/102) who preferred the syrup (p < 0.001). The majority of adults (71%) responded that they would prefer to administer the effervescent formulation based on taste. Adverse events consistent with product labeling were mild and were reported in four children and three adults: headache (n = 3), drowsiness (n = 1), abdominal pain/cramps (n = 2), and bloating/gas (n = 1). Conclusion: The taste of the ranitidine effervescent formulation dissolved in water is preferred over the ranitidine syrup. Better taste acceptance may facilitate ease of administration and compliance in pediatric patients. © 2006 Adis Data Information BV. All rights reserved.
