Proximity is a key to scalable and meaningful interactions in distributed systems, both natural and artificial, and in particular in pervasive computing environments. However, proximity as such is a vague notion that can be considered both in a very factual manner (spatial distance) and in a very abstract and subjective manner (user affinity). We claim that an adequate system or programming language for ambient intelligence applications ought to support an open notion of proximity, making it possible to rely on different, possibly subjective, understandings of proximity, as well as their combinations. We explore how to extend the Ambient-Oriented programming language AmbientTalk with language constructs that give programmers flexible control over subjective proximity definitions in both service advertising and discovery. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

A DSM protocol ensures that a thread can access data allocated on another machine using some consistency protocol. The consistency protocol can either replicate the data and unify replica changes periodically or the thread, upon remote access, can migrate to the machine that hosts the data and access the data there. There is a performance tradeoff between these extremes. Data replication suffers from a high memory overhead as every replicated object or page consumes memory on each machine. On the other hand, it is as bad to migrate threads upon each remote access since repeated accesses to the same distributed data set will cause repeated network communication whereas replication will incur this only once (at the cost of increased administration overhead to manage the replicas). We propose a hybrid protocol that uses selective replication with thread migration as its default. Even in the presence of extreme memory pressure and thread-migrations, our protocol reaches or exceeds the performance that can be achieved by means of manual replication and explicit changes of the application's code.

A class of Probabilistic Abductive Logic Programs (PALPs) is introduced and an implementation is developed in CHR for solving abductive problems, providing minimal explanations with their probabilities. Both all-explanations and most-probable-explanations versions are given. Compared with other probabilistic versions of abductive logic programming, the approach is characterized by higher generality and a flexible and adaptable architecture which incorporates integrity constraints and interaction with external constraint solvers. A PALP is transformed in a systematic way into a CHR program which serves as a query interpreter, and the resulting CHR code describes in a highly concise way, the strategies applied in the search for explanations. © 2008 Springer.

In this paper we define a many-valued semantics for hybrid logic and we give a sound and complete tableau system which is proof-theoretically well-behaved, in particular, it gives rise to a decision procedure for the logic. This shows that many-valued hybrid logics is a natural enterprise and opens up the way for future applications. © 2008, the author(s).

Hardware trends suggest that large-scale CMP architectures, with tens to hundreds of processing cores on a single piece of silicon, are iminent within the next decade. While existing CMP machines have traditionally been handled in the same way as SMPs, this magnitude of parallelism introduces several fundamental challenges at the architectural level and this, in turn, translates to novel challenges in the design of the software stack for these platforms. This paper presents the "Many Core Run Time" (McRT), a software prototype of an integrated language runtime that was designed to explore configurations of the software stack for enabling performance and scalability on large scale CMP platforms. This paper presents the architecture of McRT and discusses our experiences with the system, including experimental evaluation that lead to several interesting, non-intuitive findings, providing key insights about the structure of the system stack at this scale. A key contribution of this paper is to demonstrate how McRT enables near linear improvements in performance and scalability for desktop workloads such as the popular XviD encoder and a set of RMS (recognition, mining, and synthesis) applications. Another key contribution of this work is its use of McRT to explore non-traditional system configurations such as a light-weight executive in which McRT runs on "bare metal" and replaces the traditional OS. Such configurations are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to leverage heterogeneous computing uints as seen in today's CPU-GPU configurations. Copyright 2007 ACM.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks such as Gnutella and BitTorrent have revolutionised Internet based applications. P2P approaches provide a number of benefits, however most cycle stealing projects, such as SETI@home, have concentrated on centralised methods which still require massive amounts of concentrated network bandwidth in order to scale. More recent P2P research has developed the concept of distributed hash table (DHT) P2P overlays. These overlays provide efficient and guaranteed message delivery unlike earlier P2P networks which relied on large scale replication to probabilistically find data. Our G2:P2P framework makes use of a DHT overlay to provide a fully decentralised P2P cycle stealing system. Its distributed object programming model allows direct communication between objects and it remains reliable even as the set of peer nodes changes. In this paper we describe extensions to G2:P2P which allow us to optimise object distribution for locality. The importance of optimising data locality is well understood and has received extensive research, however, in the context of cycle-stealing systems and more generally DHT based P2P networks it is completely unexplored. Experimenters in biomedical image processing rely on software libraries to provide a large number of standard filtering and image handling algorithms. The Insight Toolkit (ITK) is an open-source library that provides a complete framework for a range of image processing tasks, and is specifically aimed at segmentation and registration tasks for both two and three dimensional images. This paper describes a visual dataflow language, ITKBoard, designed to simplify building, and more significantly, experimenting with ITK applications. The ease with which image processing experiments can be interactively modified and controlled is an important aspect of the design. The experimenter can focus on the image processing task at hand, rather than worry about the underlying software. ITKBoard incorporates composite and parameterised components, and control constructs, and relies on a novel hybrid dataflow model, combining aspects of both demand and data-driven execution.

Why does the proof-theory of hybrid logic work so well?

This is primarily a conceptual paper. The goal of the paper is to put into perspective the proof-theory of hybrid logic and in particular, try to give an answer to the following question: Why does the proof-theory of hybrid logic work so well compared to the proof-theory of ordinary modal logic? Roughly, there are two different kinds of proof systems for modal logic: systems where the formulas involved in the rules are formulas of the object language, that is, ordinary modal-logical formulas, and systems where the formulas involved in the rules are metalingustic formulas obtained by attaching labels representing possible worlds to ordinary modal-logical formulas. systems of the second kind often also involve an explicit representation of the accessibility relation. From a proof-theoretic point of view, modal-logical systems of the first kind are less well-behaved than systems of the second kind. It turns out that this can be remedied by hybridization, that is, hybridization of modal logics enables the formulation of well-behaved proof systems without involving metalinguistic machinery. What has happened is that the metalinguistic machinery has been internalized in the object language. This gives an answer to the initial question, which is that the proof-theory of hybrid logic works so well because the metalinguistic semantic machinery has been internalized in the object language.

Crosscutting concerns are pervasive in embedded software, because of the various constraints imposed by the environment and the stringent QoS requirements on the system. This paper presents a framework for modularizing crosscutting concerns in embedded and distributed software, and automating their composition at the modeling level, for simulation and validation purposes. The proposed approach does not extend the semantics of the UML in order to represent aspects. Rather, it dedicates a metamodel to the representation of the composition semantics between aspects and core models. The paper illustrates this approach by presenting a model weaver for SDL statecharts developed at Motorola Labs. Crosscutting behavior is designed with plain SDL statecharts and encapsulated into modules called aspect beans. The weaver looks at the aspect beans and the core SDL statecharts from a perspective that is defined by lightweight extensions to the SDL and UML metamodels. A connector metamodel defines the structure of the aspect-to-core binding definition. Finally, a weaver behavioral metamodel defines composition primitives for specifying weaving strategies. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is an effective technique for controlling microprocessor energy and performance. Existing DVFS techniques are primarily based on hardware, OS timeinterrupts, or static-compiler techniques. However, substantially greater gains can be realized when control opportunities are also explored in a dynamic compilation environment. There are several advantages to deploying DVFS and managing energy/performance tradeoffs through the use of a dynamic compiler. Most importantly, dynamic compiler driven DVFS is fine-grained, code-aware, and adaptive to the current microarchitecture environment. This paper presents a design framework of the run-time DVFS optimizer in a general dynamic compilation system. A prototype of the DVFS optimizer is implemented and integrated into an industrialstrength dynamic compilation system. The obtained optimization system is deployed in a real hardware platform that directly measures CPU voltage and current for accurate power and energy readings. Experimental results, based on physical measurements for over 40 SPEC or Olden benchmarks, show that significant energy savings are achieved with little performance degradation. SPEC2K FP benchmarks benefit with energy savings of up to 70% (with 0.5% performance loss). In addition, SPEC2K INT show up to 44% energy savings (with 5% performance loss), SPEC95 FP save up to 64% (with 4.9% performance loss), and Olden save up to 61% (with 4.5% performance loss). On average, the technique leads to an energy delay product (EDP) improvement that is 3X-5X better than static voltage scaling, and is more than 2X (22% vs. 9%) better than the reported DVFS results of prior static compiler work. While the proposed technique is an effective method for microprocessor voltage and frequency control, the design framework and methodology described in this paper have broader potential to address other energy and power issues such as di/dt and thermal control. © 2005 IEEE.
