In this paper, we report our numerical investigation on the photoionization of hydrogen by two orthogonal elliptically polarized and time-delayed attosecond pulses;we found that the momentum distributions exhibit a helical structure. The spectral patterns were obtained by making the use of the strong field approximation theory, and analyzed in terms of the irregularity of the overlapped fields. Some morphological characteristics of the generated vortex arms were found to be sensitive to the ellipticity and time delay of the two attosecond pulses. These phenomena could be used to investigate the intrinsic features of the photoionizaiton and complex polarized ultrashort pulses.

Maternal treatment with dexamethasone during gestation alters sexual development markers in the F₁ and F₂ male offspring of Wistar rats

Maternal treatment with dexamethasone (Dex) in threatening preterm delivery alters activities at the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in the offspring. This alteration may interfere with reproductive function. The impact of gestational Dex exposure on male reproductive function of the offspring was investigated. A total of 25 pregnant rats randomly assigned to five groups (n=5) were treated with normal saline (control), Dex (100 mu g/kg/day sc) during gestation days (GD) 1-7, 8-14, 15-21 and 1-21, respectively. Birth weight, anogenital distance (AGD), pubertal age, sperm parameters, hormonal profile and histopathology of testis and epididymis were determined in the F-1 and F-2 offspring. Results showed a significant increase (P< 0.05) in pubertal age, serum corticosterone and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) levels in the male offspring of DexGD 15-21 and 1-21 groups and a significant decrease (P< 0.05) in serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, birth weight and AGD at birth in the male F-1 offspring. In the F-2 offspring, there was a significant reduction (P< 0.05) in serum corticosterone, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone and GnRH when compared with the control. Dex treatment at GD 15-21 and 1-21 significantly reduced (P< 0.05) sperm motility and normal morphology in the F-1 and F-2 offspring. Maternal Dex treatment in rats during late gestation may disrupt sexual development markers in the F-1 and F-2 male offspring.

The human transcriptome contains many types of noncoding RNAs, which rival the number of protein-coding species. From long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that are over 200 nucleotides long to piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) of only 20 nucleotides, noncoding RNAs play important roles in regulating transcription, epigenetic modifications, translation, and cell signaling. Roles for noncoding RNAs in disease mechanisms are also being uncovered, and several species have been identified as potential drug targets. On May 11-14, 2021, the Keystone eSymposium "Noncoding RNAs: Biology and Applications" brought together researchers working in RNA biology, structure, and technologies to accelerate both the understanding of RNA basic biology and the translation of those findings into clinical applications.

Efficient production of large-size optical Schrodinger cat states

We present novel theory of effective realization of large-size optical Schrodinger cat states, which play an important role for quantum communication and quantum computation in the optical domain using laser sources. The treatment is based on the alpha-representation in infinite Hilbert space which is the decomposition of an arbitrary quantum state in terms of displaced number states characterized by the displacement amplitude alpha. We find analytical form of the alpha-representation for both even and odd Schrodinger cat states which is essential for their generation schemes. Two schemes are proposed for generating even/odd Schrodinger cat states of large size vertical bar beta vertical bar (vertical bar beta vertical bar >= 2) with high fidelity F approximate to 0.99). One scheme relies on an initially offline prepared two-mode entangled state with a fixed total photon number, while the other scheme uses separable photon Fock states as the input. In both schemes, generation of the desired states is heralded by the corresponding measurement outcomes. Conditions for obtaining states useful for quantum information processing are established and success probabilities for their generation are evaluated.

Isosurface extraction and rendering of 3D scalar field is an important method in visual analysis of scalar field data. Traditional isosurface extraction algorithm does not take into account the characteristics of the scalar field itself. In this paper, a 3D scalar field multi-resolution isosurface extraction method is proposed to improve the efficiency of isosurface extraction and rendering. This method not only deals the multi-resolution of the 3D scalar field before the isosurface extraction, but also ensures the integrity of the isosurface in the subsequent isosurface extraction process. The experimental results show that the method can greatly improve the efficiency of isosurface extraction and rendering on the basis of less effect on isosurface.

Kalman filters (KFs) are popular methods to estimate position information from a set of time-of-flight (ToF) values in radio frequency (RF)-based locating systems. Such filters are proven to be optimal under zero-mean Gaussian error distributions. In presence of multipath propagation ToF measurement errors drift due to small-scale motion. This results in changing phases of the multipath components (MPCs) which cause a drift on the ToF measurements. Thus, on a shortterm scale the ToF measurements have a non-constant bias that changes while moving. KFs cannot distinguish between the drifting measurement errors and the true motion of the tracked object. Hence, very rigid motion models have to be used for the KF which commonly causes the filters to diverge. Therefore, the KF cannot resolve the short-term errors of consecutive measurements and the long-term motion of the tracked object. This paper presents a data-driven approach that uses training sequences to derive a near-optimal position estimator. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) learns to interpret drifting errors in ToF measurements of a tracked dynamic object directly from raw ToF data. Our evaluation shows that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art KFs on both synthetically generated and real-world dynamic motion trajectories that include drifting ToF measurement errors.

As an important meteorological observation instrument, the visibility meter can ensure the safety of traffic operation. However, due to the optical system contamination as well as sample error, the accuracy and stability of the equipment are difficult to meet the requirement in the low-visibility environment. To settle this matter, a novel measurement equipment was designed based upon multiple baseline, which essentially acts as an atmospheric transmission meter with movable optical receiver, applying weighted least square method to process signal. Theoretical analysis and experiments in real atmosphere environment support this technique.

We evaluated EEG frequency abnormalities in resting state (eyes closed and eyes open) EEG in a group of chronic schizophrenia patients as compared with healthy subjects. The study included 3 methods of analysis of deviation of EEG characteristics: genuine EEG, current source density (CSD), and group independent component (gIC). All 3 methods have shown that the EEG in schizophrenia patients is characterized by enhanced low-frequency (delta and theta) and high-frequency (beta) activity in comparison with the control group. However, the spatial pattern of differences was dependent on the type of method used. Comparative analysis has shown that increased EEG power in schizophrenia patients apparently concerns both widely spatially distributed components and local components of signal. Furthermore, the observed differences in the delta and theta range can be described mainly by the local components, and those in the beta range mostly by spatially widely distributed ones. The possible nature of the widely distributed activity is discussed.

Electromagnetic Near-Field Inhomogeneity Reduction for Image Acquisition Optimization in High-Resolution Multi-Channel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Systems

This paper is a study of the inhomogeneity reduction for near-field acquisition in high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. The acquisition homogeneity in MRI imaging modality is an open issue concerning the optimal MRI image generation in terms of the RF signal acquisition. The acquisition inhomogeneity is related to the radiation patterns of the receiving antennas and its location in the MRI system, among other relevant aspects. The acquisition inhomogeneity is translated into two main effects: pattern ripples at the outer cylindrical rings and radial inhomogeneity when comparing the center value ( maximum) with the rest of the pattern. To overcome these effects, two strategies are proposed. In the first one, it is proposed to progressively vary the antenna location in the azimuthal array distribution. In the second one, it is proposed to progressively vary the antenna amplitude and phase feeding in the array distribution. To compute a figure of merit of the pattern radial uniformity and the ripples, two metrics are defined in this paper. It is proved that both the progressive modification in the location at each array ring and the variation of the feeding phase of each array ring reduce the pattern ripples and radial inhomogeneity. Optimal values for either the angular rotation or the feeding phase values can be calculated, depending on the particular dimensions of the cylinder that conforms the region of interest.

Energy consumption is one of the top challenges for achieving the next generation of supercomputing. Codesign of hardware and software is critical for improving energy efficiency (EE) for future large-scale systems. Many architectural power-saving techniques have been developed, and most hardware components are approaching physical limits. Accordingly, parallel computing software, including both applications and systems, should exploit power-saving hardware innovations and manage efficient energy use. In addition, new power-aware parallel computing methods are essential to decrease energy usage further. This article surveys software-based methods that aim to improve EE for parallel computing. It reviews the methods that exploit the characteristics of parallel scientific applications, including load imbalance and mixed precision of floating-point (FP) calculations, to improve EE. In addition, this article summarizes widely used methods to improve power usage at different granularities, such as the whole system and per application. In particular, it describes the most important techniques to measure and to achieve energy-efficient usage of various parallel computing facilities, including processors, memories, and networks. Overall, this article reviews the state-of-the-art of energy-efficient methods for parallel computing to motivate researchers to achieve optimal parallel computing under a power budget constraint.
