Understanding contact patterns of protein structures from protein contact map and investigation of unique patterns in the globin-like folded domains

Proteins are biochemical compounds made up of one or more polypeptides in a specific order, typically folded into a functionally active form. Proteins are categorized into four different structural classes according to the topology of -helices and -strands. In this study, we modeled these four structural classes as an undirected network depicting amino acids as nodes and interaction between them as edges. Results infer that basic protein classes can be easily recognized as well as distinguished by utilizing protein contact maps (PCM). Toward studying the globin-like fold, the helix-loop-helix region contacts were seen to be of a unique pattern, and these remained in all the folds. Further, the averaged diagonal contacts were analyzed and identified those contacts in / proteins were higher in comparison with the other class. Interesting, we noticed that anti-parallel beta sheets were dominant in all- and + classes that lead to similar diagonal patterns. Network properties of all four basic classes were analyzed and found to possess small-world property. Findings infer that PCM may assist classify protein structure classes and it also helps in evaluating the predicted protein structures.

A Model of Pixel and Superpixel Clustering for Object Detection

The paper presents a model of structured objects in a grayscale or color image, described by means of optimal piecewise constant image approximations, which are characterized by the minimum possible approximation errors for a given number of pixel clusters, where the approximation error means the total squared error. An ambiguous image is described as a non-hierarchical structure but is represented as an ordered superposition of object hierarchies, each containing at least one optimal approximation in g(0) = 1, 2,..., etc., colors. For the selected hierarchy of pixel clusters, the objects-of-interest are detected as the pixel clusters of optimal approximations, or as their parts, or unions. The paper develops the known idea in cluster analysis of the joint application of Ward's and K-means methods. At the same time, it is proposed to modernize each of these methods and supplement them with a third method of splitting/merging pixel clusters. This is useful for cluster analysis of big data described by a convex dependence of the optimal approximation error on the cluster number and also for adjustable object detection in digital image processing, using the optimal hierarchical pixel clustering, which is treated as an alternative to the modern informally defined "semantic" segmentation.

Diabetes is becoming one of the most relevant medical problems in today's world. The insulin pen is a largely used medication to limit the effects of this disease. However, this tool must be reserved in good conditions in order to maintain its efficiency. A very important parameter is the ambient temperature where the insulin pen is placed. The below system provides a solution to monitor and to control the temperature of the insulin pen. It consists of creating a portable medical box with two chambers where new and in-use pens are placed. Based on the temperature of these chambers, a control unit acts to heat up or to cool down the chamber temperature, therefore, the insulin pen reaches again the desirable temperature range. Concerning the applied tools, temperature and object detector sensors have been used to detect the presence of the insulin pen whereas a Peltier device was used to heat up/cool down the chamber temperature. Polystyrene was also implemented in the design of the chamber to create more isolation to the system. In order to increase electrical safety and system accuracy, some components' redundancy has been applied, mainly at the level of the processing unit and the temperature sensor. The system was tested for several hours while phone application notifications were registered when the chamber temperature was outside the acceptable range. Regarding the control process, tests have shown that the system works well and is very accurate.

This item explains a technical problem in the justification of Theorem 10 in Kenanian et al. (2019). In this paper we present a new approach for directed fuzzing. It enables faster generation of the input data for the target program's specific instructions execution. Existing fuzzing tools randomly generate or mutate input data to increase code coverage. This approach is not effective for analysis of special code regions. The basic idea behind of this paper is to instrument target program in a such way that interesting code fragments were executed as soon as possible. For that propose we detect all the paths in the program which are connecting program's entry point to the considered instructions. Then we apply two type of instrumentations. In the first case we insert coverage collection instructions only in detected paths, which enables fuzzing tool to consider generated or mutated input data valuable if the distances between executed blocks and target points are reduced. In the second case we additionally insert 'exit(0)' instructions in those basic blocks from which target points are unreachable and their execution has no any influence. It allows repeatedly increase fuzzing speed.

Ocimum plants are commonly used culinary herbs and fragrant ornamental plants. Beyond this feature, the present review firstly describes scientific studies on the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of several Ocimum species. Secondly, the use of Ocimum plants as ingredients for food preservation, such as meat, fish and dairy products was covered. Thirdly, the phytochemical composition has been reviewed to reinforce further standardization to be Ocimum plants used as preservatives. Finally, other pharmacological properties (cardioprotective activity, anti-diabetic activity, hepato-renal protective activity, anticancer activity) are also reviewed. Overall, these plants can serve to promote food preservatives and functional ingredients, but there are still some challenges to be overcome as this review points out.

A Non-Binary Dual Cascade Polar Codes Construction and Low-Complexity SCL Decoding

This paper is dedicated to error-correction coding using polar codes. First, we design an error-correction approach including two cascade non-binary polar coding (NB-CPolar) structures and a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) code. Second, we propose a low-complexity decoding algorithm based on non-binary successive cancellation list (NB-LSCL) decoding. In order to improve the correction performance, during the level-2 NB-Polar decoding process, we propose to prioritize the CRC decision, retaining the paths with higher reliability, before performing the level-1 NB-Polar decoding operation. Simulation results demonstrate that compared with the baseline scheme, the NB-CPolar encoder and NB-LSCL decoding algorithm significantly improve the error correction performance.

In the literature, it is well known that there is a bidirectional causality between economic growth and energy consumption. This is why it is crucial to forecast energy consumption. In this study, four deep learning models, i.e., Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), stacked LSTM, bidirectional LSTM, and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU), were used to forecast energy consumption in Brazil, Canada, and France. After a training test period, the performance evaluation criterion, i.e., R2, mean square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute percentage error, was performed for the performance measure. It showed that GRU is the best model for Canada and France, while LSTM is the best model for Brazil. Therefore, the energy consumption prediction was made for the 12 months of the year 2017 using LSTM for Brazil and GRU for Canada and France. Based on the selected model, it was projected that the energy consumption in Brazil was 38 597.14-38 092.88, 63 900-4 800 000 GWh in Canada, and 50 999.72-32 747.01 GWh in France in 2017. The projected consumption in Canada was very high due to the country's higher industrialization. The results obtained in this study confirmed that the nature of energy production will impact the complexity of the deep learning model.

A smart city has a complex hierarchical communication system with various components. It must meet the requirements of fast connection, reliability, and security without data compromise. Internet of Things technology is widely used to provide connectivity and control solutions for smart sensors and other devices using heterogeneous networking technologies. In this paper, we propose a routing solution for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANET) with increasing speed, reliability, and sufficient security. Many routing protocols have been proposed for WSNs and MANETs. We combine the Secret Sharing Schemes (SSS) and Redundant Residual Number Systems (RRNS) to provide an efficient mechanism for a Distributed dynamic heterogeneous network Transmission (DT) with new security and reliability routing protocol (DT-RRNS). We analyze the concept of data transmission based on RRNS that divides data into smaller encoded shares and transmits them in parallel, protecting them from attacks on routes by adaptive multipath secured transmission and providing self-correcting properties that improve the reliability and fault tolerance of the entire system.

The high energy consuming and carbon emission of complex industrial processes has become a huge challenge all over the world. Therefore, a novel production capacity assessment and carbon reduction modeling technology of industrial processes is presented in this paper by using radial basis function (RBF) neural network integrating multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) (MDS-RBF). The factors affecting the production capacity can be obtained in the low-dimensional space by using the MDS method, which can maintain the same distance in the original multi-dimensional space. Then the main influencing factors are obtained by analyzing the top largest eigenvectors in low-dimensional space. After, the main influencing factors are set as training sets of the RBF to build the production capacity assessment and carbon reduction model. The factors after the MDS process can decouple the original factors effectively, which greatly improving the prediction performance of the RBF. Compared with the RBF, back propagation (BP) neural network, and BP integrating MDS (MDS-BP), the prediction accuracy of the presented model is verified by University of California Irvine datasets (UCI). At last, the introduced modeling technology is applied to the ethylene production processes, which is great helpful to the energy optimization and carbon emission analysis.
