With the increasing number of IoT devices, there is a growing need for bandwidth to support their communication. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of available bandwidth due to preallocated bands for various services. To address this issue, Cognitive Internet of Things (CR-IoT) enables devices to optimize their efficiency and enhance their communication capabilities by intelligently accessing available bandwidth. This is achieved through the use of soft sensing metrics, where devices continuously monitor the RF environment and transmit data opportunistically in overlay mode if a free channel is detected, or in underlay mode if not. In this paper, a soft sensing metric based hybrid transmission framework is proposed for CR-IoT devices to meet the data rate requirement for the smart city applications. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated through simulation results.

This paper is dealing with redundant optoelectronic data transmission with special respect to laser channels. The concept of the generalized erasure channel (GEC) is used to determine the probability of undetected error for some binary symmetric and non-symmetric channels protected by appropriate codes. In detail, communication via different binary symmetric channels (BSCs), generalized erasure channels and symmetrized binary non symmetric channels (BNSCs) is investigated. Simple upper bounds are given, relating the new formulas to that one of the BSC Finally the results in connection with an inequality for proper codes are applied to multi wavelength optical transmission through channels generated by semiconductor lasers.

Breakability rate of fragile item depends on the accumulated stress of heaped stock level. So breakablility rate can be considered as dependent parameter of stock variable. The unit production cost is a function of production rate and also dependent on raw material cost, development cost and wear-tear cost. The holding cost is assumed to be non-linear, dependent on time. Here optimal control problem for a fragile item under finite time horizon is considered. The profit function which consists of revenue, production and holding costs is formulated as a Fixed-Final Time and Fixed State System(cf. Naidu (2000)[8]) optimal control problem with finite time horizon. Here production rate is unknown and considered as a control variable and stock level is taken as a state variable. It is formulated to optimize the production rate so that total profit is maximum. As particular cases, models are evaluated with and without breakability. The models are solved by using conventional Variational Principle along with the non-linear optimization technique-Generalised Reduced Gradient Method (LINGO 12.0). The optimum results are illustrated both numerically and graphically. Some sensitivity analysis on breakability coefficient are presented. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The problem of the rational use of energy resources remains constantly relevant and requires the search for new approaches. One of them is power control. In AC circuits, the authors see the most promising method of phase AC power control. Based on it, a power control module was developed. The structural and circuit diagrams of the developed device are presented to implement the proposed solution. The authors produced its experimental prototype and conducted experimental testing at various levels of regulated power. Savings when using the proposed power control module were calculated using the example of energy consumption in various sectors of energy-intensive systems. According to the data obtained, the module allows saving energy consumption without significant discomfort to the energy user. The calculated results allow concluding that the proposed AC power control module is fully operational, and its widespread use will significantly reduce the need for electricity.

Quality of life in general population before and during pandemic is topic need to be address by researcher in terms of mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression. The study was carried out among Saudi population. Data were collected from general population using questionnaire during the period from 22 August 2021 to 10th January 2022. As a result, total 214 participants have included in this study. Among them prevalent age group include 40 years (n= 63, 29.4%) shadowed by the age group 25-35 (n= 61, 28.5%) while above 60 years group were least frequent (n= 1, 0.5%). On questioning the applicants whether they were satisfied with their health and how would they rate their quality of life, their answers were as follows: yes, or satisfied (n= 86, 40.2%), very Satisfied (n= 102, 47.7%) Dissatisfied (n= 11, 5.1%) and neither satisfied nor dissatisfied (n= 15, 7%). Due to pandemic, they were rate quality of life very good (n= 94, 43.9%), good (n= 63, 29.4 %) poor (n= 5, 2.3 %) and neither good and nor poor (n= 52, 24.3 %). During pandemic 96 participants feel no change in their weight but 110 participants respond that there is increase in coffee intake during the pandemic. Similarly increased in smoking habits and decrease rate in social activities (n=119,41.4%). The psychosomatic well-being of people has been interrupted by disturbing their social activities during pandemic. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings. All rights reserved.

Seismic assessment of buildings and determination of their structural damage is at the forefront of modern scientific research. Since now, several researchers have proposed a number of procedures, in an attempt to estimate the damage response of the buildings subjected to strong ground motions, without conducting time-consuming analyses. These procedures, e.g. construction of fragility curves, usually utilize methods based on the application of statistical theory. In the last decades, the increase of the computers' power has led to the development of modern soft computing methods based on the adoption of Machine Learning algorithms. The present paper attempts an extensive comparative evaluation of the capability of various Machine Learning methods to adequately predict the seismic response of R/C buildings. The training dataset is created by means of Nonlinear Time History Analyses of 90 3D R/C buildings with three different masonry infills' distributions, which are subjected to 65 earthquakes. The seismic damage is expressed in terms of the Maximum Interstory Drift Ratio. A large-scale comparison study is utilized by the most efficient Machine Learning algorithms. The experimentation shows that the LightGBM approach produces training stability, high overall performance and a remarkable coefficient of determination to estimate the ability to predict the buildings' damage response. Due to the extremely urgent issue, civil protection mechanisms need to incorporate in their technological systems scientific methodologies and appropriate technical or modeling tools such as the proposed one, which can offer valuable assistance in making optimal decisions. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are classified into three topologies such as Diode Clamped, Flying Capacitor and Cascade Multilevel Inverter (CMLI). CMLI topologies include two kind of structure that is named symmetric and asymmetric topologies. Asymmetric Cascade MLI (ACMLI) topologies consist of unequal DC sources. Many modulation techniques have been used in ACMLI topology such as Multi-Carrier PWM (MC-PWM), Space Vector PWM and Selective Harmonic PWM. The MC-PWM technique is achieved by four different types. In this study, MC-PWM techniques which are named Phase Disposition PWM, Phase Opposition Disposition PWM, Alternate Phase Opposition Disposition PWM and Phase Shifted PWM have been compared. It is uncovered that Phase Opposition Disposition PWM technique is more convenient in terms of Total Harmonic Distortion of output voltage and current signals and in terms of the quality of power factor in ACMLI which is performed in this study.

Quantity of water is a major concern, but the quality is of more urgent concern due to heavy metal pollution. In this study, the focus was to develop adsorbents (tannin resin (TR) and iron-doped tannin resin (Fe-TR)) from invasive Acacia mearnsii for Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ in solution. The developed TR and Fe-TR were prepared directly by crosslinking and iron-grafting;respectively with thermal stable at ≤ 350 °C. Surface functionality analysis revealed the presence of chelating groups at ≈ 1688 and 3661 cm⁻¹. The crystallite sizes of the adsorbents were smaller compared to tannin;however, the % carbon and nitrogen were significantly higher. Also, the Brunauer–Emmet–Teller study revealed that iron-grafting of tannin after crosslinking increases the surface area, pore volume and pore size. Furthermore, the surface morphology of adsorbents indicated a well-defined structure with the formation of a whitish deposit and rough lump-like after ion uptake. Both adsorbents showed a type II isotherm with adsorption capacities of 40.650 mg/g and 13.763 mg/g for Pb²⁺and 120.63 mg/g and 110.74 for Ni²⁺ ion by TR and Fe-TR;respectively. The absorbate-adsorbent interactions were observed to be endothermic with negative and positive Gibb's free energy values for the adsorption of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺;respectively. The adsorption kinetics of Ni²⁺ is governed by several models;however, Pb²⁺ interaction is regulated by Pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, the data generated offered the possibility of both chemisorption and physisorption processes;highlighting the flexibility and multifunctionality of tannin traps for the erasure of ion impurities in wastewater. © 2021 The Author(s)

Effective rectification of terahertz electromagnetic fields in a ferrimagnetic iron garnet

It is found that single-cycle THz electromagnetic fields efficiently excite a GHz spin resonance mode in ferrimagnetic Tm3Fe5O12, despite the near absence of GHz spectral components in the exciting THz pulse. By analyzing how the efficiency of excitation depends on the orientation and strength of the THz electric field, we show that it can be explained in terms of the nonlinear THz inverse Cotton-Mouton effect. Here, the THz electric field gets effectively rectified and acts on the ferrimagnetic spins as a unipolar effective magnetic field pulse. This interpretation is confirmed by a theoretical model based on the phenomenological analysis of the effective magnetic field, combined with the equations of motion derived from the effective Lagrangian for a ferrimagnet. Moreover, by using the outcome of two-dimensional THz spectroscopy, we conjecture a quantum-mechanical interpretation of the observed effect in terms of impulsive stimulated Raman scattering of THz photons by the crystal-field split f−f electronic transitions of Tm3+.
