This paper explores the idea that information is an essential and distinctive feature of living systems. Unlike non-living systems, living systems actively acquire, process, and use information about their environments to respond to changing conditions, sustain themselves, and achieve other intrinsic goals. We discuss relevant theoretical frameworks such as "semantic information" and "fitness value of information". We also highlight the broader implications of our perspective for fields such as origins-of-life research and astrobiology. In particular, we touch on the transition to information-driven systems as a key step in abiogenesis, informational constraints as determinants of planetary habitability, and informational biosignatures for detecting life beyond Earth. We briefly discuss experimental platforms which offer opportunities to investigate these theoretical concepts in controlled environments. By integrating theoretical and experimental approaches, this perspective advances our understanding of life's informational dynamics and its universal principles across diverse scientific domains. © 2025, CC BY.

Cervical cancer is a leading malignancy in female reproductive system. While AI-assisted cytology offers a cost-effective and non-invasive screening solution, current systems struggle with generalizability in complex clinical scenarios. To address this issue, we introduced Smart-CCS, a generalizable Cervical Cancer Screening paradigm based on pretraining and adaptation to create robust and generalizable screening systems. To develop and validate Smart-CCS, we first curated a large-scale, multi-center dataset named CCS-127K, which comprises a total of 127,471 cervical cytology whole-slide images collected from 48 medical centers. By leveraging large-scale self-supervised pretraining, our CCS models are equipped with strong generalization capability, potentially generalizing across diverse scenarios. Then, we incorporated test-time adaptation to specifically optimize the trained CCS model for complex clinical settings, which adapts and refines predictions, improving real-world applicability. We conducted large-scale system evaluation among various cohorts. In retrospective cohorts, Smart-CCS achieved an overall area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.965 and sensitivity of 0.913 for cancer screening on 11 internal test datasets. In external testing, system performance maintained high at 0.950 AUC across 6 independent test datasets. In prospective cohorts, our Smart-CCS achieved AUCs of 0.947, 0.924, and 0.986 in three prospective centers, respectively. Moreover, the system demonstrated superior sensitivity in diagnosing cervical cancer, confirming the accuracy of our cancer screening results by using histology findings for validation. Interpretability analysis with cell and slide predictions further indicated that the system’s decision-making aligns with clinical practice. Smart-CCS represents a significant advancement in cervical cancer screening and highlights the potential for generalizable screening in real-word practice across diverse clinical contexts. Pervasive computing in mobile ad hoc networks requires that applications query their network environment for services and react to a plethora of events fired by other devices in that network responding to such queries. Current context-aware and event-driven architectures require the programmer to react to these events via a carefully crafted network of observers and event handlers, while inherently introducing complex concurrency issues. This paper proposes the integration of two techniques to solve these problems: ambient references and reactive programming. Ambient references are object-oriented communication abstractions that represent nearby remote objects in the mobile network and that make it possible to generate the events mentioned above. The reactive programming paradigm provides an abstraction over events such that the application can be written in a conventional programming style with explicit control flow. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Siamese Foundation Models for Crystal Structure Prediction

Crystal Structure Prediction (CSP), which aims to generate stable crystal structures from chemical compositions, represents a critical pathway for discovering novel materials. While structure prediction tasks in other domains, such as proteins, have seen remarkable advancements, CSP remains a relatively underexplored area due to the significantly more complex geometries inherent in crystal structures. In this paper, we propose Siamese foundation models specifically designed to address CSP. Our pretrain-finetune framework, named DAO, comprises two complementary foundation models: DAO-G for structure generation and DAO-P for energy prediction. Experiments on CSP benchmarks (MP-20 and MPTS-52) demonstrate that our DAO-G significantly surpasses state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods across all metrics. Extensive ablation studies further confirm that DAO-G excels in generating diverse polymorphic structures, and the dataset relaxation and energy guidance provided by DAO-P are essential for enhancing DAO-G’s performance. When applied to three real-world superconductors (CsV3Sb5, Zr16Rh8O4 and Zr16Pd8O4) that are known to be challenging to analyze, our foundation models achieve accurate critical temperature predictions and structure generations. For instance, on CsV3Sb5, DAO-G generates a structure very close to the experimental one with an RMSE of 0.0085;DAO-P predicts the Tc value with high accuracy (2.26 K vs. the ground-truth value of 2.30 K). In contrast, conventional DFT calculators like Quantum Espresso (QE) only successfully derive the structure of the first superconductor within an acceptable time frame, while the RMSE is nearly 8 times larger, and the computation speed is more than 1000 times slower. These compelling results collectively highlight the potential of our approach for advancing materials science research and development. © 2025, CC BY.

How can we connect with robots without mimicking human traits? Can we build meaningful relationships with nonhuman-like bodies? What if sociality emerges in the encounter itself? The Human-Robot Experience (HRX) Theatre tutorial introduces a participatory methodology for reimagining our relationships with robots through movement-based, experience-centered exploration. Participants will explore how we bodily resonate and make meaning with non-anthropomorphic machines using our Relational Body Mapping (RBM) method, employing robot costumes to facilitate embodied perspective-taking. Adopting a robot's unique perspective to experience its distinct social affordances expands our understanding beyond anthropocentric views, unlocking new modes of nonverbal communication and embodied empathy. Movement and its meaning-making potential are key to HRX. We begin with gentle movement explorations. This heightened sensitivity will shape our first embodied dialogues with artifacts. A live performance with dancers, costumes, and a robot will showcase how RBM harnesses kinesthetic awareness to explore how sociality arises in the encounter. Applying their embodied insights, participants will develop and enact inclusive speculative scenarios through embodied role-play with robot costumes. This tutorial introduces an embodied prototyping approach that leverages the potential of movement dynamics for designing expressive, nonhumanlike robots. Cultivating empathy with machinelike entities could promote the design of more diverse and sustainable relationships that recognize and leverage the differences between humans and robots. No prior dance experience is required; participants will engage at their own comfort level. Join us to explore the transformative potential of movement in reimagining our robotic futures! Indoor localization is essential for future 6G systems that combine communication and sensing. Accurate positioning is vital for applications like augmented reality and autonomous robotics. In this context, we propose a multi-domain channel state information (CSI)-based localization approach using deep attention networks (DAN) in a massive multiple input multiple output-based (maMIMO) system. We introduce the extraction of features from CSI information in multiple domains, including time, frequency, and Doppler, and design uni-domain and multidomain feature sets. We implement the proposed DAN approach leveraging attention mechanisms to integrate and effectively process the multi-domain CSI data. We evaluate the performance of our model using a publicly available maMIMO dataset and compare it with baseline convolutional neural network (CNN) models. Our results indicate that the DAN-based approach enhances localization performance more than uni-domain, multidomain CNN models and also existing multi-domain-based CNN benchmarks. These findings highlight the benefits of using multidomain features, especially from the Doppler domain along with attention mechanisms for reliable indoor localization.

Extensions to the actor model have been proposed to ease the development of mobile ad hoc applications. However, programming in the actor model is still difficult as it does not provide abstractions to synchronously coordinate multiple actors. Thus, when programmers want to coordinate two or more actors they have to do it by hand. Additionally, programmers need to write failure recovery code for failures caused by the concurrent access to the actors they are using. Coding this manually is error prone and might even be not feasible. We propose a language abstraction based on software transactional memory to coordinate actors. We show that the integration of software transactional memory with the actor model makes writing failure recovery code superuous. Moreover, we show that our system even handles those cases where manually writing the failure recovery code is not feasible. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Multimodal neuroimaging data, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET), provides complementary information about the brain that can aid in Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis. However, most existing deep learning methods still rely on patch-based extraction from neuroimaging data, which typically yields suboptimal performance due to its isolation from the subsequent network and does not effectively capture the varying scales of structural changes in the cerebrum. Moreover, these methods often simply concatenate multimodal data, ignoring the interactions between them that can highlight discriminative regions and thereby improve the diagnosis of AD. To tackle these issues, we develop a multimodal and multi-scale deep learning model that effectively leverages the interaction between the multimodal and multiscale of the neuroimaging data. First, we employ a convolutional neural network to embed each scale of the multimodal images. Second, we propose multimodal scale fusion mechanisms that utilize both multi-head self-attention and multi-head cross-attention, which capture global relations among the embedded features and weigh each modality's contribution to another, and hence enhancing feature extraction and interaction between each scale of MRI and PET images. Third, we introduce a cross-modality fusion module that includes a multi-head cross-attention to fuse MRI and PET data at different scales and promote global features from the previous attention layers. Finally, all the features from every scale are fused to discriminate between the different stages of AD. We evaluated our proposed method on the ADNI dataset, and the results show that our model achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art methods. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

PDA Construction via Union of Cartesian Product Cache Configurations for Coded Caching

Caching is an efficient technique to reduce peak traffic by storing popular content in local caches. Placement delivery array (PDA) proposed by Yan et al. is a combinatorial structure to design coded caching schemes with uncoded placement and one-shot linear delivery. By taking the m-fold Cartesian product of a small base PDA, Wang et al. constructed a big PDA while maintaining the memory ratio and transmission load unchanged, which achieves linear growth in both the number of users and coded caching gain. In order to achieve exponential growth in both the number of users and coded caching gain, in this paper we propose a PDA construction by taking the union operation of the cache configurations from the m-fold Cartesian product of a base PDA. The resulting PDA leads to a coded caching scheme with subpacketization increasing sub-exponentially with the number of users while keeping the load constant for fixed memory ratio. By applying the proposed construction to existing base PDAs, three new coded caching schemes are obtained, which cover some existing schemes as special cases and can achieve lower load with simultaneously lower subpacketization for some memory ratios. Co-speech gesture video synthesis is a challenging task that requires both probabilistic modeling of human gestures and the synthesis of realistic images that align with the rhythmic nuances of speech. To address these challenges, we propose Cosh-DiT, a Co-speech gesture video system with hybrid Diffusion Transformers that perform audio-to-motion and motion-to-video synthesis using discrete and continuous diffusion modeling, respectively. First, we introduce an audio Diffusion Transformer (Cosh-DiT-A) to synthesize expressive gesture dynamics synchronized with speech rhythms. To capture upper body, facial, and hand movement priors, we employ vector-quantized variational autoencoders (VQ-VAEs) to jointly learn their dependencies within a discrete latent space. Then, for realistic video synthesis conditioned on the generated speech-driven motion, we design a visual Diffusion Transformer (Cosh-DiT-V) that effectively integrates spatial and temporal contexts. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework consistently generates lifelike videos with expressive facial expressions and natural, smooth gestures that align seamlessly with speech. © 2025, CC BY.
