Automating support for software evolution in UML

Disciplined support for evolution of software artifacts is important in all phases of the software life-cycle. In order to achieve this support, a uniform underlying foundation for software evolution is necessary. While, in the past, reuse contracts have been proposed as such a formalism in a number of different domains, this paper generalises the formalism, and integrates it into the UML metamodel. As such, support for evolution becomes readily availab.e for many kinds of UML models, ranging from requirements to the implementation phase.

We describe a linguistic symbiosis between AmbientTalk, a flexible, domain-specific language for writing distributed programs and Java, a conventional object-oriented language. This symbiosis allows concerns related to distribution (service discovery, asynchronous communication, failure handling) to be handled in the domain-specific language, while still enabling the reuse of existing software components written in a conventional language. The symbiosis is novel in the sense that a mapping is defined between the concurrency models of both languages. AmbientTalk employs an inherently event-driven model based on actors, while conventional object-oriented languages employ a concurrency model based on threads. The contribution of this paper is a linguistic symbiosis which ensures that the invariants of the event-driven concurrency model are not violated by engaging in symbiosis with multi-threaded programs.

A significant body of research in ubiquitous computing deals with mobile networks, i.e. networks of mobile devices interconnected by wireless communication links. Due to the very nature of such mobile networks, addressing and communicating with remote objects is significantly more difficult than in their fixed counterparts. This paper reconsiders the remote object reference concept - one of the most fundamental programming ions of distributed programming languages - in the context of mobile networks. We describe four desirable characteristics of remote References in mobile networks, show how existing remote object References fail to exhibit them, and subsequently propose ambient references: remote object references designed for mobile networks.

My PhD thesis [7] claims that the principles behind object-oriented software evolution are independent of a particular domain or phase in the software life-cycle. To validate this claim, a formalism based on graphs and graph rewriting was developed and applied to a particular aspect of software evolution, namely the problem of software upgrading and software merging. When the same piece of software is modified in parallel by different software developers, unexpected inconsistencies can arise. Formal support can be provided to detect and resolve these inconsistencies in a general way.

Bioinformatics is among the most active research areas in computer science. In this study, we investigate a suite of workloads in bioinformatics on two multiprocessor systems with different configurations, and examine the effects of the configurations on the performance of the workloads. Our result indicates that the configurations of the multiprocessor systems have significant impact on the performance and scalab.lity of the workloads. For example, a number of workloads have significantly higher scalab.lity on one of the systems, but poorer absolute performance than on the other system. However, traditional scalab.lity failed to capture the impacts of the system configurations on the workloads. We present insights on what kinds of workloads will run faster on which systems and propose new metrics to capture the impacts of multiple processor configurations on the workloads. These findings not only provide an easy way to compare results running on different systems, but also enable re-configuration of the underlying systems to run specific workloads efficiently. We also show how processor mapping and loop spreading may help map the workoads to the underlining multiprocessor configuration and achieve consistent scalab.lity for these workloads. © 2007 IEEE.

There is a wide range of scenarios where software systems have to be able to behave differently according to their context of use. In Context-oriented programming (COP), programs can be partitioned into behavioral variations that can be freely activated and combined at runtime with well-defined scopes, such that the program behavior is affected depending on context. About four years ago, we have introduced our vision of Context-oriented programming and have presented the programming language ContextL as an extension to the Common Lisp Object System (CLOS), as our first language extension that explicitly realizes this vision. Since then, ContextL has been picked up by various developers world-wide, is now in use in several software systems, and has been continuously improved to meet the demands of its users. For these reasons, ContextL can currently be regarded as the most mature realization of COP concepts. In this paper, we give an overview of the major ingredients of ContextL, describe the developments in ContextL of the last four years, and sketch some future work. Copyright © 2008 ACM.

Applications need to become more concurrent to take advantage of the increased computational power provided by chip level multiprocessing. Programmers have traditionally managed this concurrency using locks (mutex based synchronization). Unfortunately, lock based synchronization often leads to deadlocks, makes fine-grained synchronization difficult, hinders composition of atomic primitives, and provides no support for error recovery. Transactions avoid many of these problems, and therefore, promise to ease concurrent programming. We describe a software transactional memory (STM) system that is part of McRT, an experimental Multi-Core RunTime. The McRT-STM implementation uses a number of novel algorithms, and supports advanced features such as nested transactions with partial aborts, conditional signaling within a transaction, and object based conflict detection for C/C++ applications. The McRT-STM exports interfaces that can be used from C/C++ programs directly or as a target for compilers translating higher level linguistic constructs. We present a detailed performance analysis of various STM design tradeoffs such as pessimistic versus optimistic concurrency, undo logging versus write buffering, and cache line based versus object based conflict detection. We also show a MCAS implementation that works on arbitrary values, coexists with the STM, and can be used as a more efficient form of transactional memory. To provide a baseline we compare the performance of the STM with that of fine-grained and coarse-grained locking using a number of concurrent data structures on a 16-processor SMP system. We also show our STM performance on a non-synthetic workload - the Linux sendmail application. Copyright © 2006 ACM.

With single thread performance starting to plateau, HW architects have turned to chip level multiprocessing (CMP) to increase processing power. All major microprocessor companies are aggressively shipping multi-core products in the mainstream computing market. Moore's law will largely be used to increase HW thread-level parallelism through higher core counts in a CMP environment. CMPs bring new challenges into the design of the software system stack. In this tutorial, we talk about the shift to multi-core processors and the programming implications. In particular, we focus on transactional programming. Transactions have emerged as a promising alternative to lock-based synchronization that eliminates many of the problems associated with lock-based synchronization. We discuss the design of both hardware and software transactional memory and quantify the tradeoffs between the different design points. We show how to extend the Java and C languages with transactional constructs, and how to integrate transactions with compiler optimizations and the language runtime (e.g., memory manager and garbage collection).

A critical concern in the reuse of software is the propagation of changes made to reusable artifacts. Without techniques to manage these changes, multiple versions of these artifacts will propagate through different systems and reusers will not be able to benefit from improvements to the original artifact. We propose to codify the management of change in a software system by means of reuse contracts that record the protocol between managers and users of a reusable asset. Just as real world contracts can be extended, amended and customised, reuse contracts are subject to parallel changes encoded by formal reuse operators;extension, refinement and concretisation. Reuse contracts and their operators serve as structured documentation and facilitate the propagation of changes to reusable assets by indicating how much work is needed to update previously built applications, where and how to test and how to adjust these applications. © 1996 ACM.

Transaction management is a known cross-cutting concern. Previous research has been conducted to express this concern as an aspect. However, this work uses general-purpose aspect languages which lack a formal foundation and are unable to express advanced models for transaction management. In contrast, we designed a domain-specific aspect language for advanced transaction management, called KALA, that is based on a formalism for advanced transactions. As a result, KALA covers the field of advanced transaction management while obtaining a much higher level of abstraction than is achieved with general-purpose aspect languages. In this paper we detail the creation process of KALA. Copyright 2006 ACM.
