The next phase of LHC Operations-High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), which is aimed at ten-fold increase in the luminosity of proton-proton collisions at the energy of 14 TeV, is expected to start operation in 2027-2028 and will deliver an unprecedented scientific data volume of multi-exabyte scale. This amount of data has to be stored and the corresponding storage system should ensure fast and reliable data delivery for processing by scientific groups distributed all over the world. The present LHC computing and data processing model will not be able to provide the required infrastructure growth even taking into account the expected hardware technology evolution. To address this challenge the new state-of-The-Art computing infrastructure technologies are now being developed and are presented here. The possibilities of application of the HL-LHC distributed data handling technique for other particle and astro-particle physics experiments dealing with large-scale data volumes like DUNE, LSST, Belle-II, JUNO, SKAO etc. are also discussed. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Software recreates are necessitated due to inadequate diagnostic capability following a failure. They impact the service process and the perception of availability, but have never been adequately quantified. This paper develops a technique to make the key measurements of: percent recreate, arrival rate and open time, from problem service data without requiring any additional instrumentation. The study is conducted over an 18 month period on two operating system products, that are among the best in the industry for diagnosis and service. The results provide the first insight into the problem and some accurate baselines.

Performance prediction is useful in helping parallel programmers answer questions such as speedup scalability. Performance prediction for parallel simulation requires first working out the performance analyzer algorithms for specific simulation protocols. In order for the prediction results to be close to the results from actual parallel executions, there are further considerations when implementing the analyzer. These include (a) equivalence of code between the sequential program and parallel program, and (b) system effects (e.g. cache miss rates and synchronization overheads in an actual parallel execution). This paper describes our investigations into these issues on a performance analyzer for a conservative, "super-step" (synchronous) simulation protocol. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

The goal of Partitioned Global Address Space (PGAS) languages is to improve programmer productivity in large scale parallel machines. However, PGAS programs may have many fine-grained shared accesses that lead to performance degradation. Manual code transformations or compiler optimizations are required to improve the performance of programs with fine-grained accesses. The downside of manual code transformations is the increased program complexity that hinders programmer productivity. On the other hand, most compiler optimizations of fine-grain accesses require knowledge of physical data mapping and the use of parallel loop constructs. This paper presents an optimization for the Unified Parallel C language that combines compile time (static) and runtime (dynamic) coalescing of shared data, without the knowledge of physical data mapping. Larger messages increase the network efficiency and static coalescing decreases the overhead of library calls. The performance evaluation uses two microbenchmarks and three benchmarks to obtain scaling and absolute performance numbers on up to 32768 cores of a Power 775 machine. Our results show that the compiler transformation results in speedups from 1.15X up to 21X compared with the baseline versions and that they achieve up to 63% the performance of the MPI versions. © 2013 ACM.

A new approach for segmenting different anatomical regions in dental Computed Tomography (CT) studies is presented in this paper. It is expected that the proposed approach will help automate different tissues regions by providing initial boundary points for deformable models or seed points for split and merge segmentation algorithms. Preliminary results obtained for dental CT studies of dentate and edentulous human-mandible are presented with finite element models divided by tetrahedral elements, which built based on actual CT data combined with triangulation equations. Identification of different anatomical regions set for mandible cortical and cancellous bones by generated 3D models by marching cubes technique.

Leveraged by the success of applications aiming at the ‘free’ sharing of data in the Internet, the paradigm of peer-to-peer (P2P) computing has had substantial consideration devoted to it recently. This paper presents a high-level abstraction for remote object interaction in a P2P environment, called borrow/lend (BL). We present the principles underlying our BL abstraction, and illustrate how this abstraction can be used to program P2P applications in Java. We contrast our abstraction with established abstractions for distributed programming such as the remote method invocation or the tuple space, illustrating how the BL abstraction, obviously influenced by such previous abstractions, unifies flavors of these, but also how it captures the constraints specific to P2P environments. Contemporary simulation technology for neuronal networks enables the simulation of brain-scale networks using neuron models with a single or a few compartments. However, distributed simulations at full cell density are still lacking the electrical coupling between cells via so called gap junctions. This is due to the absence of efficient algorithms to simulate gap junctions on large parallel computers. The difficulty is that gap junctions require an instantaneous interaction between the coupled neurons, whereas the efficiency of simulation codes for spiking neurons relies on delayed communication. In a recent paper [15] we describe a technology to overcome this obstacle. Here, we give an overview of the challenges to include gap junctions into a distributed simulation scheme for neuronal networks and present an implementation of the new technology available in the NEural Simulation Tool (NEST 2.10.0). Subsequently we introduce the usage of gap junctions in model scripts as well as benchmarks assessing the performance and overhead of the technology on the supercomputers JUQUEEN and K computer. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

Quantity of water is a major concern, but the quality is of more urgent concern due to heavy metal pollution. In this study, the focus was to develop adsorbents (tannin resin (TR) and iron-doped tannin resin (Fe-TR)) from invasive Acacia mearnsii for Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺ in solution. The developed TR and Fe-TR were prepared directly by crosslinking and iron-grafting;respectively with thermal stable at ≤ 350 °C. Surface functionality analysis revealed the presence of chelating groups at ≈ 1688 and 3661 cm⁻¹. The crystallite sizes of the adsorbents were smaller compared to tannin;however, the % carbon and nitrogen were significantly higher. Also, the Brunauer–Emmet–Teller study revealed that iron-grafting of tannin after crosslinking increases the surface area, pore volume and pore size. Furthermore, the surface morphology of adsorbents indicated a well-defined structure with the formation of a whitish deposit and rough lump-like after ion uptake. Both adsorbents showed a type II isotherm with adsorption capacities of 40.650 mg/g and 13.763 mg/g for Pb²⁺and 120.63 mg/g and 110.74 for Ni²⁺ ion by TR and Fe-TR;respectively. The absorbate-adsorbent interactions were observed to be endothermic with negative and positive Gibb's free energy values for the adsorption of Pb²⁺ and Ni²⁺;respectively. The adsorption kinetics of Ni²⁺ is governed by several models;however, Pb²⁺ interaction is regulated by Pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, the data generated offered the possibility of both chemisorption and physisorption processes;highlighting the flexibility and multifunctionality of tannin traps for the erasure of ion impurities in wastewater. © 2021 The Author(s)

An overview of existing urban software mobile applications of the transport and economic direction is given. A model of a functional rationalizer of consumer behavior is being built. The software model of the functional rationalizer of consumer behavior (SM FRCB) was developed for the first time. PMFRCB allows the user to expand the number of his preferred needs (occupations, activities) during the daily cycle through intelligent recommendations. Also, SM FRCB allows you to optimize needs (activities, activities) at the cost and rate of their use. The SM FRCB is made in Python_3 using the libraries matplotlib, collections, numpy, pyplot, mplot3d. The analysis of consumer behavior before and after using the functional rationalizer model is carried out. The graphical results of a structural analysis of the costs of old and new consumer behavior, analysis of consumer behavior within the boundaries of the theory of possibilities and the model of transport behavior of a resident before and after applying the functional rationalizer model are presented. The prospects of further improving the SM FRCB are considered.
