This research introduces a novel approach, MBO-NB, that leverages Migrating Birds Optimization (MBO) coupled with Naive Bayes as an internal classifier to address feature selection challenges in text classification having large number of features. Focusing on computational efficiency, we preprocess raw data using the Information Gain algorithm, strategically reducing the feature count from an average of 62221 to 2089. Our experiments demonstrate MBO-NB's superior effectiveness in feature reduction compared to other existing techniques, emphasizing an increased classification accuracy. The successful integration of Naive Bayes within MBO presents a well-rounded solution. In individual comparisons with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), MBO-NB consistently outperforms by an average of 6.9% across four setups. This research offers valuable insights into enhancing feature selection methods, providing a scalable and effective solution for text classification. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Efficient Detection of Commutative Factors in Factor Graphs

Lifted probabilistic inference exploits symmetries in probabilistic graphical models to allow for tractable probabilistic inference with respect to domain sizes. To exploit symmetries in, e.g., factor graphs, it is crucial to identify commutative factors, i.e., factors having symmetries within themselves due to their arguments being exchangeable. The current state of the art to check whether a factor is commutative with respect to a subset of its arguments iterates over all possible subsets of the factor’s arguments, i.e., O(2n) iterations for a factor with n arguments in the worst case. In this paper, we efficiently solve the problem of detecting commutative factors in a factor graph. In particular, we introduce the detection of commutative factors (DECOR) algorithm, which allows us to drastically reduce the computational effort for checking whether a factor is commutative in practice. We prove that DECOR efficiently identifies restrictions to drastically reduce the number of required iterations and validate the efficiency of DECOR in our empirical evaluation. © 2024, CC BY.

Uvlhub: A Feature Model Data Repository Using Uvl and Open Science Principles

Feature models are the de facto standard for modelling variabilities and commonalities. Concrete models in different domains exist;however, many are in private or sparse repositories or belong to discontinued projects. The dispersion of knowledge of feature models hinders the study and reuse of these artefacts in different studies. The Universal Variability Language (UVL) is a community effort textual feature model language that promotes a common way of serialising feature models independently of concrete tools. Open science principles promote transparency, accessibility, and collaboration in scientific research. Although some attempts exist to promote feature model sharing, the existing solutions lack open science principles by design. In addition, existing and public feature models are described using formats not always supported by current tools. This paper presents UVLHUB, a repository of feature models in UVL format. UVLHUB provides a front end that facilitates the search, upload, storage, and management of feature model datasets, improving the capabilities of discontinued proposals. Furthermore, the tool communicates with Zenodo providing a permanent save of datasets and following open science principles. UVLHUB includes existing datasets and is readily available to include new data and functionalities in the future. The problem of the rational use of energy resources remains constantly relevant and requires the search for new approaches. One of them is power control. In AC circuits, the authors see the most promising method of phase AC power control. Based on it, a power control module was developed. The structural and circuit diagrams of the developed device are presented to implement the proposed solution. The authors produced its experimental prototype and conducted experimental testing at various levels of regulated power. Savings when using the proposed power control module were calculated using the example of energy consumption in various sectors of energy-intensive systems. According to the data obtained, the module allows saving energy consumption without significant discomfort to the energy user. The calculated results allow concluding that the proposed AC power control module is fully operational, and its widespread use will significantly reduce the need for electricity. © 2024 IEEE.

CONTEXT: Versioning allows users to efficiently create and evolve artifacts, not only but especially in the domain of model-driven engineering. Due to collaboration tools, the place and time where users jointly work at their artifacts do not play an important role anymore. Objective: We systematically elaborated a classification framework for collaboration and versioning tools. The intention is threefold: First, it should be possible to classify existing approaches. Second, deriving from user goals requirements to be met, and capabilities to be supported by a new tool. Third, given a set of capabilities, highlight which user goals can be achieved. Method: According to Kang and Lee, we systematically elaborated a problem space and a solution space and created mappings between both spaces and their sub-spaces. To demonstrate the applicability, we classified existing VCS like git, Google Docs, and several MDE-specific approaches. Results: The created feature diagram covers 238 features and contains about 87 constraints. Conclusion: The developed framework supports researchers and developers in classifying their tools, revealing new opportunities to improve their tools, and guiding the development of new tools.

The paper addresses the problem of assessing media text readability depending on the correlation of objective and subjective text complexity. Objective text complexity refers to a set of measurable characteristics such as baseline, morphological, syntactic and lexical characteristics of a media text (a piece of news published on university websites), which is calculated automatically for each text. In total, 34 parameters are considered. Subjective text complexity score is assigned to each text by human experts who assess the clarity, structure, cohesion and coherence of the text. The correlation between subjective and objective text complexity is studied using machine learning models. The readability level is measured using machine learning methods and regression-correlation analysis. Namely, an artificial neural network and regression models are used. It is demonstrated that the use of polynomial features and lasso regularization allows to get a compact regression model of a high quality. The use of the chosen machine learning techniques made it possible to estimate the impact of distinct linguistic features on the readability level. © 2023 IEEE.

To improve the treatment of many diseases, continuous monitoring of the patient at home with the ability of doctors to interact with individual cases demands an increasing number of medical devices connected to the cloud. To support the doctor’s duties, such devices may benefit from AI-based diagnosis routines. In order for such devices to be approved and placed on the market, they need to comply with various legal, regulatory, economic, and social requirements. An integral part of these requirements is the protection of the patients’ data. In this paper, based on a current use case, we describe a workflow on how to identify risks and address their mitigations. To this end, we recall the relevant legal, regulatory, economic, and social data protection requirements. We pursue our findings on a Homecare OCT device that is intended to be used by elderly patients on a daily basis, by taking images of their eyes and sending them for further analysis to a cloud- and AI-based system. The patient’s ophthalmologist gets notified for further dedicated treatment depending on the result. To perform the risk management, we describe (i) the architecture of the homecare system, (ii) analyze its data flow, (iii) discuss several vectors of attack, and (iv) propose ways to mitigate the risks. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Graceful degradation is an established concept to improve the resilience of systems, especially when other resilience mechanisms have failed. Its implementation is often heavily tied to the application code and, thus, cumbersome and error prone. As IoT systems get not only ubiquitous but also critical, reliable graceful degradation would be ideal. In this paper, we present the Morpheus framework that provides a TypeScript-internal DSL to enable a systematic development of degradable IoT systems. The design of the framework is based on the concept of separation of concerns by providing distinct yet linked languages to specify hierarchical components and their connections;the components’ operating modes and transfer functions between them;as well as state machines for the specification of the components’ behaviour in each operating mode. The operating modes for each component serve as degradation levels. Automatic degradation of a component is triggered in case of failures of connected components. With recovery from underlying failures, the component is automatically upgraded back to a higher level. We illustrate our framework using a simplified prototype of an entrance barrier of a parking garage. © 2021 Copyright (c) 2021 for this paper by its authors. The paper investigates the implementation of virtual networks on the SDN data plane, modeled by a graph of physical connections between network nodes. A virtual network is defined as a set of ordered host pairs (sender, receiver), and it is implemented by a set of host-host paths that uniquely determine the switch settings. It is shown that any set of host pairs can be implemented on a connected graph without the occurrence of an infinite transfer of packets in a loop and without duplicate paths when the host receives the same packet several times. However, undesired paths may occur when a host receives a packet that is not intended for this host. On the other hand, it is shown that in some cases, implementation without undesired paths inevitably leads to duplication or looping of packets. The question is posed: on which graph can any set of host pairs be implemented without looping, duplication and undesired paths? A sufficient condition is proposed and a hypothesis is put that this condition is also the necessary condition. © 2020 IEEE.

The article considers in the intellectual processing of information, moving from a large unit of measurement to a smaller, more important unit of measurement, selecting sets of informative symbols and classifying symbols, developing modern recognition systems that help specialists in the field, as well as evaluating the states of objects to be classified, developing a classification algorithm for multi-class cases of educational samples. The development of a multi-class algorithm for symbol classification serves to develop the theory of symbol recognition. It deals with the construction of a decision rule construction algorithm. Its main purpose is to determine which of the given classes the recognized object belongs to. The complexity or simplicity of the proposed algorithm depends on the number of classes participating in the study sample. If the number of classes is two, then the formulation of decision rules is simple. That is why the classification algorithms proposed by most authors are solved for cases where the number of classes is three or more, the decisive rule in the matter of classification of objects is solved by making two classes. The construction of a multi-class decision rule for classification, which takes into account all classes at the same time, is a complex and urgent issue. In the article, in the classification of objects, a multi-level complex structured decision rule was developed based on special inequalities, and two-, three- and multi-class classification algorithms were developed.
