Understanding human interests and intents from movement data are fundamental challenges for any location-based service. With the pervasiveness of sensor embedded smartphones and wireless networks and communication, the availability of spatio-temporal mobility trace (timestamped location information) is increasingly growing. Analysing these huge amount of mobility data is another major concern. This paper proposes a cloud-based framework named MovCloud to efficiently manage and analyse mobility data. Specifically, the framework presents a hierarchical indexing schema to store trajectory data in different spatio-temporal resolution, clusters the trajectories based on semantic movement behaviour instead of only raw latitude, longitude point and resolves mobility queries using MapReduce paradigm. MovCloud is implemented over Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and an extensive set of experiments on real-life data yield the effectiveness of the proposed framework. MovCloud has achieved ～ 28% better clustering accuracy and also executed three times faster than the baseline methods.

Characterizing and optimizing Java-based HPC applications on Intel many-core architecture

The increasing demand for performance has stimulated the wide adoption of many-core accelerators like IntelR Xeon PhiTMCoprocessor, which is based on Intel’s Many Integrated Core architecture. While many HPC applications running in native mode have been tuned to run efficiently on Xeon Phi, it is still unclear how a managed runtime like JVM performs on such an architecture. In this paper, we present the first measurement study of a set of Java HPC applications on Xeon Phi under JVM. One key obstacle to the study is that there is currently little support of Java for Xeon Phi. This paper presents the result based on the first porting of Open JDK platform to Xeon Phi, in which the Hot Spot virtual machine acts as the kernel execution engine. The main difficulty includes the incompatibility between Xeon Phi ISA and the assembly library of Hotspot *** evaluating the multithreaded Java Grande benchmark suite and our ported Java Phoenix benchmarks, we quantitatively study the performance and scalability issues of JVM on Xeon Phi and draw several conclusions from the study. To fully utilize the vector computing capability and hide the significant memory access latency on the coprocessor, we present a semi-automatic vectorization scheme and software prefetching model in Hot *** with 60 physical cores and tuning, our optimized JVM achieves averagely 2.7 x and 3.5 x speedup compared to Xeon CPU processor by using vectorization and prefetching accordingly. Our study also indicates that it is viable and potentially performance-beneficial to run applications written for such a managed runtime like JVM on Xeon Phi.

With the cloud repository service furnished by the cloud computing, users can comfortably arrange themselves as a cluster and distribute information effectively. In order to empower public verifier to audit the distributed information, clients in the cluster need to Figure out signatures on complete chunks of collaborative information. Every client in the cluster modifies and signs his respective chunks, and deploys in the cloud server. Hence specific chunks of shared information are normally signed by specific clients. If anyone of the customers' is found malicious, he is immediately repudiated from the cluster. The prevailing clients in the cluster are permitted to re-sign the chunks that were earlier signed by this eliminated client. This approach is inefficient due to the massive amount of collaborative information in the cloud. By exploiting the approach of proxy re-signatures, the CSP is acknowledged to re-sign chunks in support of the prevailing clients during customer repudiation. When many clients deploy the same information to the cloud repository, repository space has identical copies, hence deduplication technology is usually utilized to lower the capacity and bandwidth prerequisites of the utilities by removing repetitious information and hoarding only an original replica of them. In order to assimilate both data honesty and deduplication in cloud, we present a novel Secure Two Level Deduplication and Auditing of Shared Data in Cloud (STLDAS) mechanism. Experimental results show that our mechanism achieves secure deduplication and appreciable improvement in tag generation.

Integrating Internet of Things (IoT) devices into an existing network is a nightmare. Minimalistic, unfriendly user interfaces, if any;badly chosen security methods, most notably the defaults;lack of long term security;and bugs or misconAgurations are plentiful. As a result, an increasing number of owners operate unsecure devices. Our investigations into the root causes of the problems resulted in the development of Home CertiAcate Authority (HomeCA). HomeCAincludes a comprehensive set of secure, vendor-independent interoperable practices based on existing protocols and open standards. HomeCA avoids most of the current pitfalls in network integration by design. Geospatial data analysis is an emerging area of research today due to the potential to enable varied location-aware services. The existing centralized cloud-based analysis becomes time and computing-intensive for huge amount of geospatial data processing. This paper addresses the challenge of time and power-efficiency in QoS-aware geospatial query resolution. We propose a cloudlet based hierarchical paradigm, namely Geo-Cloudlet, where the cloudlets contain the geospatial data of the districts. The state and national level geospatial data are stored inside the state cloud and country cloud respectively. The query resolution is performed by either the cloudlet or by the state cloud or country cloud depending upon the geographical region related to the query. The experimental analysis illustrates that the proposed architecture Geo-Cloudlet reduces the latency up to 61.3% and power consumption up to 61.1% over the use of only remote cloud servers for geospatial query resolution.

An overview of existing urban software mobile applications of the transport and economic direction is given. A model of a functional rationalizer of consumer behavior is being built. The software model of the functional rationalizer of consumer behavior (SM FRCB) was developed for the first time. PMFRCB allows the user to expand the number of his preferred needs (occupations, activities) during the daily cycle through intelligent recommendations. Also, SM FRCB allows you to optimize needs (activities, activities) at the cost and rate of their use. The SM FRCB is made in Python_3 using the libraries matplotlib, collections, numpy, pyplot, mplot3d. The analysis of consumer behavior before and after using the functional rationalizer model is carried out. The graphical results of a structural analysis of the costs of old and new consumer behavior, analysis of consumer behavior within the boundaries of the theory of possibilities and the model of transport behavior of a resident before and after applying the functional rationalizer model are presented. The prospects of further improving the SM FRCB are considered.

Based on a pay-as-you-go model, cloud computing provides the possibility of hosting pervasive applications from both academic and business domains. However, data centers hosting cloud applications consume huge amounts of electrical energy, contributing to high operational costs and large carbon footprints to the environment. Energy-aware resource provisioning is an effective solution to diminish the energy consumption of cloud data centers. Recently, a growing trend has emerged, where cloud technology is used to run periodic real-time applications such as multimedia, telecommunication, video gaming, and industrial applications. In order for a real-time application to be able to use cloud services, cloud providers have to be able to provide timing guarantees. In this paper, we introduce an energy-aware resource provisioning mechanism for cloud data centers, which are capable of serving real-time periodic tasks following the Software as a Service model. The proposed method is compared against an energy-aware version of the RT-OpenStack. RT-OpenStack is a recently proposed approach to provide a time-predictable version of OpenStack. The experimental results manifest that our proposed resource provisioning method outperforms energy-aware version of the RT-OpenStack by 16.01%, 25.45%, and 25.45% in terms of energy consumption, number of used servers, and average utilization of used servers, respectively. Moreover, from the scalability perspective, the preference of the proposed method for large-scale data centers is more considerable. Copyright © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

In the dynamic environment of human-robot collaboration, a key for boosting the efficiency of human workers is supporting them with context-dependent work instructions, delivered via communication modalities that suit the actual context. Workers, in turn, should be supported in controlling the robot or other components of the production system by using the most convenient modality, thus lifting the limitations of traditional interfaces as push buttons installed at fixed locations. We introduce a workflow for context-dependent multimodal communication in a collaborative work environment and present its implementation in a Human-Machine Interface Controller system.

—Vehicular Ad Hoc Network has attracted both research and industrial community due to its benefits in facilitating human life and enhancing the security and comfort. However, various issues have been faced in such networks such as information security, routing reliability, dynamic high mobility of vehicles, that influence the stability of communication. To overcome this issue, it is necessary to increase the routing protocols performances, by keeping only the stable path during the communication. The effective solutions that have been investigated in the literature are based on the link prediction to avoid broken links. In this paper, we propose a new solution based on machine learning concept for link prediction, using LR and Support Vector Regression (SVR) which is a variant of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm. SVR allows predicting the movements of the vehicles in the network which gives us a decision for the link state at a future time. We study the performance of SVR by comparing the generated prediction values against real movement traces of different vehicles in various mobility scenarios, and to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we calculate the error rate. Finally, we compare this new SVR method with Lagrange interpolation solution. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.
