The increasing amount of resources in a single machine constantly increases the level of server consolidation for virtualization. However, along with the improvement of server efficiency, the dependability of the virtualization layer is not being progressed towards the right direction;instead, the hypervisor level is more vulnerable to diverse failures due to the increasing complexity and scale of the hypervisor layer. This makes tens to hundreds of production VMs in a machine easily risk a single point of failure. This paper tries to mitigate this problem by proposing a technique called TinyChecker, which uses a tiny nested hypervisor to transparently protect guest VMs against failures in the hypervisor layer. TinyChecker is a very small software layer designated for transparent failure detection and recovery, whose reliability can be guaranteed by its small size and possible further formal verification. TinyChecker records all the communication context between VM and hypervisor, protects the critical VM data, detects and recovers the hypervisors among failures. TinyChecker is currently still in an early stage, we report our design consideration and initial evaluation results. © 2012 IEEE.

Nano communication is one of the fastest growing emerging research fields. In recent years, much progress has been achieved in developing nano machines supporting our needs in health care and other scenarios. However, experts agree that only the interaction among nano machines allows to address the very complex requirements in the field. Drug delivery and environmental control are only two of the many interesting application domains, which, at the same time, pose many new challenging problems. Very relevant communication concepts have been investigated such as RF radio communication in the terra hertz band or molecular communication based on transmitter molecules. Yet, one question has not been considered so far and that is nano communication security, i.e., will it be possible to protect such systems from manipulation by malicious parties? Our objective is to provide some first insights into the security challenges and to highlight some of the open research challenges in this field. The main observation is that especially for molecular communication existing security and cryptographic solutions might not be applicable. In this context, we coin the term biochemical cryptography that might lead to significant improvements in the field of molecular communication. We also point to relevant problems that have similarities with typical network architectures but also completely new challenges.

In the domain of dynamically evolving distributed systems composed of autonomous and (self-) adaptive components, the task of systematically managing the design complexity of their communication and composition is a pressing issue. This stems from the dynamic nature of such systems, where components and their bindings may appear and disappear without anticipation. To address this challenge, we propose employing separation of concerns via a mechanism of dynamic implicit bindings with implicit communication. This way, we strive for dynamically formed, implicitly interacting groups - ensembles - of autonomous components. In this context, we introduce the DEECo component model, where such bindings, as well as the associated communication, are managed in an automated way, enabling transparent handling of the dynamic changes in the system. © 2012 IEEE.

Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol is a leading proactive routing protocol for Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). Since the OLSR protocol in its standard version does not support multi-path packet forwarding, we have developed and implemented its multi-path extension. As a result of a slightly modified path computation algorithm and the application of backpressure Max-Weight Scheduling (MWS) policy, the MANETs can utilize the extended functionality based on OLSR. The experiment results presented in this paper compare the performance of the standard and extended OLSR versions in a large congested MANET (i.e., in large-scale DES-Testbed located at Freie Universitat Berlin). © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Route and service discovery in wireless multi-hop networks applies flooding or gossip routing to disseminate and gather information. Since packets may get lost, retransmissions of lost packets are required. In many protocols the retransmission timeout is fixed in the protocol specification. In this paper we demonstrate that optimization of the timeout is required in order to ensure proper functioning of flooding schemes. Based on an experimental study, we apply percolation theory and derive analytical models for computing the optimal restart timeout. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study of gossip routing, percolation, and restart in this context.

In service-oriented systems, service-level agreements (SLA) are specified as contracts between service providers and service consumers. SLAs stipulate - among other things - the provided services' performance. A service provider must fulfill the agreements stated in SLAs, e.g., to avoid paying penalties. Service consumers must verify whether the service quality as purchased is delivered. We present an architectural design decision model (ADDM) covering the design of a QoS monitoring infrastructure. The ADDM collects design decisions about measuring, storing, and evaluating performance-related quality-of-service (QoS) agreements. The model includes various requirements and puts forth design solutions by referring to established architectural, remoting, and design patterns. We evaluate the ADDM to build the architecture of a QoS monitoring infrastructure in a case study. The model guides through the decision-making process of designing a QoS monitoring infrastructure. © 2011 ACM.

We introduce a linear measurement-based method for interference estimation in wireless mesh networks. The approach is based on measuring the channel occupancy and requires only O(n) measurements for a network with n nodes, thus making it suitable for large network deployments. We show, how we utilize the carrier sensing mechanism of commodity IEEE 802.11 hardware to measure the channel occupancy. Based on the measurements, we develop the Channel Occupancy Interference Model (COIM). The model is validated in the DES-Testbed, a wireless mesh network with 128 multi-radio network nodes at the Freie Universität Berlin. The validation shows, that the model is capable of predicting interfering nodes in the communication and also in the interference range. Additionally, our evaluation shows that the often used 2-hop interference model is too pessimistic for indoor network deployments, about 60% of the 2-hop neighbors are not interferers in our set-up.

Wireless sensor networks and publishing of sensor data on the Internet bear the potential to substantially increase public awareness and involvement in environmental sustainability. Air pollution monitoring in urban areas is a prime example of such an application as common air pollutants have direct effect on the human health. However, bringing the vision of public involvement in environmental monitoring to a reality poses today substantial technical challenges for the communication and information systems infrastructure, to scale up from isolated well controlled systems to an open and scalable infrastructure. In this talk we provide first an overview of the OpenSense project for air pollution monitoring. OpenSense takes a holistic, end-to-end systems perspective. The crucial insight is that in designing open scalable sensing system one has to consider dependencies among many system dimensions both for modelling and control, including sensor behaviour, wireless networks, mobility, environmental models, user needs as well as trust and privacy concerns. In the second part of the talk we will discuss in more detail aspects of sensor data processing relevant to the OpenSense project. We will introduce model-based methods for sensor data cleaning, segmentation and multi-query processing. We will show a framework to extract semantic activity information from trajectory data and finally provide some initial results on studying the tradeoffs between privacy and sensor data accuracy in community sensing settings. Finally we will provide an outlook on some of our next steps we plan to undertake within OpenSense towards realizing a community-based approach for addressing health concerns of urban populations.

In a model-driven service-oriented architecture (SOA), the services are in large parts generated from models. To facilitate monitoring, governance, and self-adaptation the information in these models can be used by services that monitor, manage, or adapt the SOA at runtime. If a service for monitoring, management, or adaptation in an SOA is dependent on models, and the metamodel changes, usually the service needs to be manually adapted to work with the new version, recompiled, and redeployed. This manual effort impedes the use of models at runtime. To address this problem, this paper introduces model-aware services that work with models at runtime. These services are supported using a service environment, called Morse. Hiding the complexity of implicit versioning of models from users while respecting the principle of Universally Unique Identifiers (UUIDs), it realizes a novel transparent UUID-based model versioning technique. It uses the model-driven approach to automatically generate and deploy Morse services that are used by the model-aware services to access models in the correct version. In this way, monitoring and adaptation in SOAs can be better supported, and the manual effort to evolve services for monitoring, management, or adaptation, which are based on models at runtime, can be minimized.

This paper presents a semi-automated method that helps iteratively write use-cases in natural language and verify consistency of behavior encoded within them. In particular, this is beneficial when the use-cases are created simultaneously by multiple developers. The proposed method allows verifying the consistency of textual use-case specification by employing annotations in use-case steps that are transformed into temporal logic formulae and verified within a formal behavior model. A supporting tool for plain English use-case analysis is currently being enhanced by integrating the verification algorithm proposed in the paper. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
