Different sorts of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications emerge every day and they are becoming more and more popular. The performance of such applications may be measured by means of Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics. In this paper, the factors that influence these metrics are surveyed. Moreover, the impact of economic traffic management solutions (e.g., proposed by IETF) on perceived QoE for the dominant overlay applications is assessed. The possible regulatory issues regarding QoE for P2P applications are also mentioned.

Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed.

As embedded and real-time systems became an inherent part of many electronic appliances of everyday use, the demand for their development has grown enormously. Increasing complexity of these systems leads to demands of tools and techniques addressing their efficient and short time-to-market development. One of the possible ways to tackle the problem is a reuse of tools, methodologies and know how already established and successfully adopted in other application domains. Such transfer cannot be done inherently without appropriate modification and methodical adaptation based on an analysis of domain requirements. The paper analyzes necessary modifications and extensions of a general purpose component-based technology to enable development of embedded real-time systems. In addition, we present our own experience obtained while tailoring advanced component framework SOFA 2 to support development of embedded and real-time systems.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

High-coverage testing of sensornet applications is vital for pre-deployment bug cleansing, but has previously been difficult due to the limited set of available tools. We integrate the KleeNet symbolic execution engine with the COOJA network simulator to allow for straight-forward and intuitive high-coverage testing initiated from a simulation environment. A tight coupling of simulation and testing helps detect, narrow down, and fix complex interaction bugs in an early development phase. We demonstrate the seamless transition between COOJA simulation and KleeNet symbolic execution. Our framework enables future research in how highcoverage testing tools could be used in cooperationwith simulation tools. Copyright 2010 ACM.
