The Internet of Things(IoT)is a modern approach that enables connection with a wide variety of devices *** to the resource constraints and open nature of IoT nodes,the routing protocol for low power and lossy(RPL)networks may be vulnerable to several routing ***’s why a network intrusion detection system(NIDS)is needed to guard against routing assaults on RPL-based IoT *** imbalance between the false and valid attacks in the training set degrades the performance of machine learning employed to detect network ***,we propose in this paper a novel approach to balance the dataset classes based on metaheuristic optimization applied to locality-sensitive hashing and synthetic minority oversampling technique(LSH-SMOTE).The proposed optimization approach is based on a new hybrid between the grey wolf and dipper throated optimization *** prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach,a set of experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of NIDS for three cases,namely,detection without dataset balancing,detection with SMOTE balancing,and detection with the proposed optimized LSHSOMTE *** results showed that the proposed approach outperforms the other approaches and could boost the detection *** addition,a statistical analysis is performed to study the significance and stability of the proposed *** conducted experiments include seven different types of attack cases in the RPL-NIDS17 *** on the 2696 CMC,2023,vol.74,no.2 proposed approach,the achieved accuracy is(98.1%),sensitivity is(97.8%),and specificity is(98.8%).

Today, most database-backed web applications depend on the database to handle deadlocks. At runtime, the database monitors the progress of transaction execution to detect deadlocks and abort affected transactions. However, this common detect-and-recover strategy is costly to performance as aborted transactions waste CPU *** avoid deadlock-induced performance degradation, developers aim to reorganize the application code to remove deadlocks. Unfortunately, doing so is difficult for web applications. Not only do their implementations include hundreds of thousands of LoCs, but they also use third-party object-relational mapping (ORM) frameworks which hide database access details. Consequently, it is hard for developers to accurately diagnose *** propose WeSEER, a deadlock diagnosis tool for web applications. To overcome the opacity of ORMs, WeSEER performs concolic execution on unit tests to extract a web application’s transactions as a sequence of template statements with symbolic inputs as well as path conditions that enable the sequence. WeSEER then analyzes the extracted transactions based on fine-grained lock modeling to identify potential deadlocks and report the code locations that cause them. We implement WeSEER for Java-based (OpenJDK) web applications, and use it to analyze two popular open-source e-commerce applications, Broadleaf and Shopizer. WeSEER has successfully identified 18 potential deadlocks in Broadleaf and Shopizer. Eliminating these identified deadlocks can result in up to 39.5× and 4.5× throughput improvement for Broadleaf and Shopizer, respectively.

A Farewell to Harms: Risk Management for Medical Devices via the Riskman Ontology & Shapes

We introduce the Riskman ontology & shapes for representing and analysing information about risk management for medical devices. Risk management is concerned with taking necessary precautions so a medical device does not cause harms for users or the environment. To date, risk management documentation is submitted to notified bodies (for certification) in the form of semi-structured natural language text. We propose to use classes from the Riskman ontology to logically model risk management documentation, and to use the included SHACL constraints to check for syntactic completeness and conformity to relevant standards. In particular, the ontology is modelled after ISO 14971 and the recently published VDE Spec 90025. Our proposed methodology has the potential to save many person-hours for both manufacturers (when creating risk management documentation) as well as notified bodies (when assessing submitted applications for certification), and thus offers considerable benefits for healthcare and, by extension, society as a whole. In terms of security and privacy,mobile ad-hoc network(MANET)continues to be in demand for additional debate and *** more MANET applications become data-oriented,implementing a secure and reliable data transfer protocol becomes a major concern in the ***,MANET’s lack of infrastructure,unpredictable topology,and restricted resources,as well as the lack of a previously permitted trust relationship among connected nodes,contribute to the attack detection burden.A novel detection approach is presented in this paper to classify passive and active black-hole *** proposed approach is based on the dipper throated optimization(DTO)algorithm,which presents a plausible path out of multiple paths for statistics transmission to boost MANETs’quality of service.A group of selected packet features will then be weighed by the DTO-based multi-layer perceptron(DTO-MLP),and these features are collected from nodes using the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchical(LEACH)clustering *** is a powerful classifier and the DTO weight optimization method has a significant impact on improving the classification process by strengthening the weights of key features while suppressing the weights ofminor *** hybridmethod is primarily designed to combat active black-hole *** the LEACH clustering phase,however,can also detect passive black-hole *** effect of mobility variation on detection error and routing overhead is explored and evaluated using the suggested *** diverse mobility situations,the results demonstrate up to 97%detection accuracy and faster execution ***,the suggested approach uses an adjustable threshold value to make a correct conclusion regarding whether a node is malicious or benign.

VANETs make it possible to execute specific vehicular applications, in particular those with the aim of turning traffic safe and avoiding congestion. However, it is difficult to maintain communication between vehicles when these vehicles move dynamically at high speeds. Context-aware systems have been studied as a way to monitor context information from sensors, which can be used by systems to adapt to changes in their environment or in application requirements. This concept is used by VANET protocols and applications in different ways. Quality of Context (QoC) metrics are used to qualify the context information considering different characteristics of sensors and of the information, being a base for systems to decide if it is safe and interesting to use specific information. In this paper, we propose QoC metrics related to the stability of the updating process for a vehicular communication context. In addition, we also analyze the Age QoC metric and show how to calculate it for distinct context information. We simulate scenarios to verify the QoC metrics behavior. The results showed that the proposed QoC metrics can properly qualify the vehicular communication context.

This paper presents a unified approach for repre-senting multiple domains alongside production in cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) through domain-specific languages (DSLs). The approach is illustrated using material flows (MFs) as an example. The paper identifies requirements for DSLs in CPPSs and MFs, including concurrency, synchronization, constraints, and heterogeneity support. Subsequently, a plugin system is in-troduced for the existing Production Flow Description Language (PFDL), which allows users to incorporate additional domain-specific functionality in the form of plugins. To demonstrate this approach, we present the MF plugin, resulting in the combined PFDLMF. This showcases the reusability of such an approach and the easy integration of new CPPS domains. We envision the convergence of the PFDL with plugins towards a unified flow description language for CPPSs. A practical CPPS use-case demonstrates the expressiveness of the PFDLMF in modeling and executing complex MFs in an agent-based architecture.

WIP: An Engaging Undergraduate Intro to Model Checking in Software Engineering Using TLA+

Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA+), into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one’s undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive "failures" through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding TLA+ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in TLA+ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. Conclusions: Our initial efforts suggest that 84% of our students had a positive experience in our formal methods course. Proteins are complex biological information granules that play a crucial role in various cellular processes within living organisms. Processing 3D protein structures, which are the most informative from the biological point of view, is both intricate and time-consuming. In particular, performing 3D protein structure searches against large protein datasets involves identifying similarities and conducting structural alignments across numerous molecules (granules). This task demands advanced methods for matching identical and similar regions within protein structures and substantial computational resources to handle large collections of macromolecular data efficiently. In this paper, we present our parallel implementation of scalable 3D structural alignment on the Apache Spark big data platform. We describe a customized approach that leverages Spark data transformations within the data processing pipeline for the alignment process. Our experimental results demonstrate that this solution, tightly integrated with the Spark processing model, is both efficient and scalable, even with the increasing volume of protein structure data. © 2024 IEEE.

Applications of internet-of-things(IoT)are increasingly being used in many facets of our daily life,which results in an enormous volume of *** computing and fog computing,two of the most common technologies used in IoT applications,have led to major security *** are on the rise as a result of the usage of these technologies since present security measures are *** artificial intelligence(AI)based security solutions,such as intrusion detection systems(IDS),have been proposed in recent *** technologies that require data preprocessing and machine learning algorithm-performance augmentation require the use of feature selection(FS)techniques to increase classification accuracy by minimizing the number of features *** the other hand,metaheuristic optimization algorithms have been widely used in feature selection in recent *** this paper,we proposed a hybrid optimization algorithm for feature selection in *** proposed algorithm is based on grey wolf(GW),and dipper throated optimization(DTO)algorithms and is referred to as *** proposed algorithm has a better balance between the exploration and exploitation steps of the optimization process and thus could achieve better *** the employed IoT-IDS dataset,the performance of the proposed GWDTO algorithm was assessed using a set of evaluation metrics and compared to other optimization approaches in 2678 CMC,2023,vol.74,no.2 the literature to validate its *** addition,a statistical analysis is performed to assess the stability and effectiveness of the proposed *** results confirmed the superiority of the proposed approach in boosting the classification accuracy of the intrusion in IoT-based networks.

Photo sharing has become an integral part of social media;many new platforms even prompt their users to share photos under time pressure. Yet, sharing photos can also affect the privacy of individuals in a negative way. In this paper, we investigate the factor of time pressure when sharing on social media in relation to target audiences and photo content. For this, we conducted an online study (N=195) where we simulated time-pressured sharing scenarios with photos containing different sorts of content, including private information and unfamiliar bystanders. Among our results, we show that time pressure can impact sharing decisions even though this is not consciously considered by users. Additionally, we confirm the influence of non-privacy-related influence factors like trust towards the target audience, photo aesthetics, and connection with others. Based on our results, we discuss design implications for photo-sharing prompts to better protect private information and bystanders in social media photos. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
