The cost function for the capacity of optical links follows a step function. That means, the support of one more lightpath might require a costly upgrade of an optical cross connect (OXC), but then additional lightpaths can be supported at almost no further cost. This should be considered when lightpaths are routed through an optical network. In this paper we optimize the routing of the lightpaths to minimize the costs for the required optical equipment. We consider this problem for the failure-free case only and for survivable networks using dedicated path protection. We formulate the problems by integer linear programs (ILPs). In addition, we propose heuristics to solve the problem since solving ILPs is computationally expensive and not feasible for large problem instances. We show that our heuristics lead to good results within a fraction of time compared to ILP solvers.

More and more people use voice over IP instead of traditional phone *** Session Initiation Protocol (SIP),a protocol for session management in general,becomes the standard protocol in ***,SIP relies on central ***,maintaining the infrastructure is *** results in the trend to transfer peer-to-peer (P2P) concepts to SIP to overcome administration efforts due to self-organisation of the *** this paper,we propose a novel JXTA-based P2P architecture for SIP *** is an open peer-to-peer platform,which provides basic infrastructure services for building P2P *** concept does not need central entities for maintaining the SIP traffic,while maintaining compatibility with standard ***,we seamlessly added service location capabilities into our infrastructure to support service discovery in dynamic *** evaluated our concept in comparison to standard SIP within three scenarios: local area network,point- to-point network and wide area *** results show that our approach compares well in terms of response time but results in more traffic for maintaining the peer-to-peer overlay.

Classification turns chaotic knowledge into regularity by systematizing a domain and providing a common vocabulary. Currently there is a lack of systematic and comprehensive studies in organization and classification of Grid faults. We address this gap with a multi-perspective Grid fault taxonomy describing an incident using eight different characteristics. It is hard to define a taxonomy of broad validity and acceptance that satisfies the vast number of requirements of the many Grid user communities. Nevertheless we proof that our taxonomy can serve as a solid basis for defining project-specific custom classification schemes by giving a concrete example created for a state-of-the-art Grid middleware environment.

Introducing location-awareness in overlay networks allows for a higher efficiency of the offered services, e.g., shorter search times or higher throughput. This is especially important for business applications supported by overlays. In this paper, we will illustrate how such an increase in efficiency causes congestion in an otherwise well-dimensioned locality-aware overlay using a distributed Hash Table (DHT). In particular, we will use a Vertical Handover (VHO) support system using a Pastry substrate as an example. We will describe the occuring congestion problem and identify the underlying reasons. Thus, we describe the basic trade-off between efficiency and load-inequality. Furthermore, we introduce a solution for the specific issue observed, and conduct a performance evaluation identifying the major influence factors and optimization potential for future work.

The collective and coordinated usage of distributed resources for problem solution within dynamic virtual organizations can be realized with the grid computing technology. For distributing and solving a task, a grid application involves a complex workflow of dividing a task into smaller sub-tasks, scheduling and submitting jobs for solving those sub-tasks, and eventually collecting and combining the results of the sub-tasks into a final result. The quality assurance of grid applications is a challenge due to the highly distributed nature of the grid environment in which the grid application is deployed. This paper investigates the applicability of the testing and test control notation (TTCN-3) for testing the workflows of distributed grid applications. To this aim, a case study has been created that consists of a distributed grid application which includes a typical grid application workflow; as the main contribution, this case study contains a corresponding distributed TTCN-3 test suite that tests the correct execution of the grid application workflow. To demonstrate the adaptation of the abstract TTCN-3 test suite to a specific grid environment, corresponding reusable test adapters have been implemented for the grid middleware Globus Toolkit 4 (GT4). The realized test system demonstrates that TTCN-3 is applicable for testing the workflow of distributed grid applications.

We present results of extensive experiments performed on nine data sets with numerical attributes using six promising discretization methods. For every method and every data set 30 experiments of ten-fold cross validation were conducted and then means and sample standard deviations were computed. Our results show that for a specific data set it is essential to choose an appropriate discretization method since performance of discretization methods differ significantly. However, in general, among all of these discretization methods there is no statistically significant worst or best method. Thus, in practice, for a given data set the best discretization method should be selected individually. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The fundamental paradigm of context-aware computing has lead to a diversity of conceivable context-based applications. In order to support these applications, efficient and scalable context management platforms have become utterly important. In this paper we propose a layered reference model that encapsulates suitable abstractions to tackle the complexity of context management in mobile ad-hoc networks. For each layer, we outline strategies and mechanisms we have developed to manage context information efficiently so that it can readily be used by context-based services and applications in these networks. In addition, we discuss refinements of the current model that we currently investigate, which are related to data semantics such as context quality and expressive location models, performance enhancement by adaptation, and aspects regarding the integration of ad-hoc context management with infrastructure- based systems leading to a hybrid system structure.

This paper has provided a first step towards solid theoretical foundations of large scale distributed systems. It has focused on applying complex systems theories SOC and HOT to data management solutions in P2P grids. It argues that replica management solution over OpenDHT, the state of the art DHT deployment, is based on SOC and consequently achieves robustness even in the presence of churn but not optimal performance.

Statistical anomaly detection (SAD) becomes an increasingly important tool for the early recognition of potential threats for security-relevant information systems. SAD systems heavily rely on the probing of potentially very large networks. Our contribution is an analysis of the resource requirements on the information sink which constitutes the bottleneck of Client/Server-based SAD systems. In order to dimension the system appropriately, we investigate the trade-off between accumulated and distributed arrival patterns, and the impact of the processing phase of the information sink.

Network operators gradually open their interfaces to formerly hidden services that foster the development of a new class of mobile applications which are operated by 3rd party providers and take into account context information such as the user's location. As a result, the inclusion of the network operators' infrastructure provides many new possibilities and the potential to change the way in which mobile devices are used in everyday life. However, this development raises important issues such as the protection of the users location information and privacy while using location-based services. In this paper we illustrate a service architecture together with a novel and flexible privacy enhancing mechanism that allows the realization of the highly postulated pay-as-you-go model for location-based services. We further specify mobile applications that operate on the exchange of location information even between different network operators while still meeting mandatory legal requirements.
