Knowledge graphs (KGs) are widely used for representing and organizing structured knowledge in diverse domains. However, the creation and upkeep of KGs pose substantial challenges. Developing a KG demands extensive expertise in data modeling, ontology design, and data curation. Furthermore, KGs are dynamic, requiring continuous updates and quality control to ensure accuracy and relevance. These intricacies contribute to the considerable effort required for their development and maintenance. One critical dimension of KGs that warrants attention is reproducibility. The ability to replicate and validate KGs is fundamental for ensuring the trustworthiness and sustainability of the knowledge they represent. Reproducible KGs not only support open science by allowing others to build upon existing knowledge but also enhance transparency and reliability in disseminating information. Despite the growing number of domain-specific KGs, a comprehensive analysis concerning their reproducibility has been lacking. This paper addresses this gap by offering a general overview of domain-specific KGs and comparing them based on various reproducibility criteria. Our study over 19 different domains shows only eight out of 250 domain-specific KGs (3.2%) provide publicly available source code. Among these, only one system could successfully pass our reproducibility assessment (14.3%). These findings highlight the challenges and gaps in achieving reproducibility across domain-specific KGs. Our finding that only 0.4% of published domain-specific KGs are reproducible shows a clear need for further research and a shift in cultural practices. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper attempts to take a comprehensive look at the challenges of representing the spatio-temporal structures and dynamic processes that define a city’s overall characteristics. For the task of urban planning and urban operation, we take the stance that even if the necessary representations of these structures and processes can be achieved, the most important representation of the relevant mindsets of the citizens are, unfortunately, mostly neglected. After a review of major “traditional” urban models of structures behind urban scale, form, and dynamics, we turn to major recent modeling approaches triggered by recent advances in AI that enable multimodal generative models. Some of these models can create representations of geometries, networks and images, and reason flexibly at a human-compatible semantic level. They provide huge amounts of knowledge extracted from huge collections of text and image documents and cover the required rich representation spectrum including geographic knowledge by different knowledge sources, degrees of granularity and scales. We then discuss what these new opportunities mean for coping with the modeling challenges posed by cities, in particular with regard to the role and impact of citizens and their interactions within the city infrastructure. We propose to integrate these possibilities with existing approaches, such as agent-based models, which opens up new modeling spaces including rich citizen models which are able to also represent social interactions. Finally, we put forward some thoughts about a vision of a “social AI in a city ecosystem” that adds relevant citizen models to state-of-the-art structural and process models. This extended city representation will enable urban planners to establish citizen-oriented planning of city infrastructures, to make them into inviting environments that reconcile and foster human culture, city resilience and sustainability.

A New Intelligent Scheduler to Improve Reactive OpenFlow Communication in SDN-Based IoT Data Streams

The significant adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) has increased the challenges in providing adequate IoT infrastructures meeting essential requirements, such as dynamicity networks and low latency. In this context, the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm and the OpenFlow protocol provide new possibilities for IoT networks. Based on the global view of network elements enabled by the Controller, SDN allows the programmability and control of the infrastructure according to the actual demands of applications. The OpenFlow protocol defines the exchange of messages between controllers and switches, enabling communication and network control. OpenFlow implements three operation modes: proactive, reactive, and hybrid. Due to the dynamic characteristic of the IoT data stream, the reactive mode is mainly used and indicated for IoT environments. As the OpenFlow controller installs rules dynamically, there is no need to know the network's sources, destinations, and paths in advance. Although reactive mode introduces dynamicity, it can generate additional delay due to switch-controller communication. This delay increases the response time of the IoT data stream. We propose an SDN-IoT scheduler based on Deep Neural Networks (DNN) to predict the time between data stream changes from IoT devices and install rules in advance, suppressing the existing delay in reactive mode. The proposal automatically uses previous data from the IoT data stream to calculate the time of the following communication from IoT devices. Our results indicate that predicting IoT data stream changes and installing OpenFlow rules in advance reduced about 51% of communications response time. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Evaluating Quantum Optimization for Dynamic Self-Reliant Community Detection

Power grid partitioning is an important requirement for resilient distribution grids. Since electricity production is progressively shifted to the distribution side, dynamic identification of self-reliant grid subsets becomes crucial for operation. This problem can be represented as a modification to the well-known NP-hard Community Detection (CD) problem. We formulate it as a Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problem suitable for solving using quantum computation, which is expected to find better-quality partitions faster. The formulation aims to find communities with maximal self-sufficiency and minimal power flowing between them. To assess quantum optimization for sizeable problems, we apply a hierarchical divisive method that solves sub-problem QUBOs to perform grid bisections. Furthermore, we propose a customization of the Louvain heuristic that includes self-reliance. In the evaluation, we first demonstrate that this problem examines exponential runtime scaling classically. Then, using different IEEE power system test cases, we benchmark the solution quality for multiple approaches: D-Wave’s hybrid quantum-classical solvers, classical heuristics, and a branch-and-bound solver. As a result, we observe that the hybrid solvers provide very promising results, both with and without the divisive algorithm, regarding solution quality achieved within a given time frame. Fuzzy data processing enables data enrichment and increases data interpretation in industrial environments. In the cloud-based IoT data ingestion pipelines, fuzzy data processing can be implemented in several locations, closer to the IoT events gateways, stream processors, or the persistence layer before the data is visualized. Since Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)-enabled manufacturing can produce vast amounts of data, the decision on the placement of the fuzzy data processing can be important for secondary processes performed on the enriched data, like the predictive maintenance inferencing. In this paper, we analyze two locations of fuzzy data processing in the cloud-based environment built for monitoring AGVs in smart factories - by formulating fuzzy queries against data streams on stream processing units and data at rest in a database. The querying scenarios cover fuzzy filtering with simple and complex criteria, fuzzy filtering through assignment to a linguistic variable, and joining data streams by representing joining attributes as fuzzy numbers. The experimental results show that querying the data stream can be more efficient and profitable in the scalable environment of many AGVs. However, the enrichment provided for the data at rest is also beneficial when gathering data for building future predictive maintenance models.

As a key technology of intelligent satellite-enabled services in B5G or 6G networks, deploying Deep Neural Networks (DNN) models on satellites has been a notable trend, catering to the daily demand for extensive computing-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. The computing resources are strategically deployed on satellites where sensor data is generated or collected, facilitating the fine-grained computational inference of DNN-based tasks. However, no prior study has comprehensively explored the crucial inference challenges-e.g., the trade-off between the number of tasks completed and accuracy and partitioning models in multi-exit models-in the resource-constrained space environment. Effective scheduling frameworks cater to various streams of inference tasks are scarce because inference performance may deviate from the ideal situation due to changes in task system status, such as task profiles and network state. To this end, we first formulate a gain-aware in-orbit computing inference problem to strike a proper trade-off between inference latency and the number of tasks completed by dynamically selecting optimal early exit points and model partitioning points. We propose an offline dynamic programming-based algorithm that provides an effective solution when comprehensive system details are to be predicted. We have developed an online learning-based method to schedule inference tasks with uncertain and dynamic system statuses in real-world situations. Our evaluation shows that, compared to baseline methods, the online learning-based algorithm can improve task gain by an average of 87.3% across various tasks. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

A Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network consists of a large number of nodes, where each node may have different capabilities and properties. Finding peers with specific capabilities and properties is challenging. Thus, we propose a practical solution to the problem of peer discovery, which is finding peers in the network according to a specified query. We contribute a peer discovery for an m-ary tree-structured P2P network by utilizing a connected dominating set (CDS), a technique that is typically used in unstructured networks. Our approach of constructing the CDS requires no additional communication cost, while nodes can insert, update and remove data within ${\mathcal{O}}(1)$. Each node of the CDS – a dominating set node – maintains only a limited number of nodes. We confirm the properties of our proposed solution by using the ns-3 discrete-event simulator. This includes, besides the degree of decentralism of the peer discovery, also the heterogeneity of peers.

Zero-touch network is anticipated to inaugurate the generation of intelligent and highly flexible resource provisioning strategies where multiple service providers collaboratively offer computation and storage resources. This transformation presents substantial challenges to network administration and service providers regarding sustainability and scalability. This article combines distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) with Zero-touch Provisioning (ZTP) for edge networks. This combination helps to manage network devices seamlessly and intelligently by minimizing human intervention. In addition, several advantages are also highlighted that come with incorporating distributed AI into ZTP in the context of edge networks. Statistical privacy-preserving message broadcast for peer-to-peer networks

Privacy concerns are widely discussed in research and society in general. For the public infrastructure of financial blockchains, this discussion encompasses the privacy of the originator of a transaction broadcasted on the underlying peer-to-peer network. Adaptive diffusion is an approach to expose an alternative source of a message to attackers. However, this approach assumes an unsuitable attacker model and a non-realistic network model for current peer-to-peer networks on the Internet. We transform adaptive diffusion into a new statistical privacy-preserving broadcast protocol for realistic current networks. We model a class of unstructured peer-to-peer networks as organically growing graphs and provide models for other classes of such networks. We show that the distribution of shortest paths can be modelled using a normal distribution N (µ, σ2). We determine statistical estimators for µ, σ via multivariate models. The model behaves logarithmic over the number of nodes n and proportional to an inverse exponential over the number of added edges per node k. These results facilitate the computation of optimal forwarding probabilities during the dissemination phase for maximum privacy, with participants having only limited information about network topology.
