BEYOND THE BOUNDARY OF HOME Religion, Space, and Women in Hong Kong

This article focuses on women's place/space in Hong Kong with both deliberate attention to women's absence/presence in history and an aspiration to reinstall women's contribution to the place it deserves. Inspired by Derrida's dialectic between presence and absence, the author traces women's "presence" through their deeds and voices from "behind" and "underneath" their historical "absence." As explained by Turner's liminality of religion as an "in-between" space, the woman subject stretches her spatial map beyond the boundary of "home." Through their religious devotion, women cross from their "designated" domestic confinement to the social and the private spheres, to the public sphere. The author draws on four women's cases, each from a religious tradition in Hong Kong-Christianity, Buddhism, Daoism, and Islam-to illus-trate the various forms of negotiation they exercised in everyday life to find a subject in multiplicity. The gendered subject is never a monolithic essence but ever becoming.

What factors are associated with improvements in productivity in clinical laboratories in the asia Pacific Region?

Introduction: Clinical laboratories usually have a quality management system such as ISO 15189, which provides a framework for quality and competence to perform medical testing and internal systems such as audit and nonconformance to ensure consistent processes. However, organizations need to have access to internal procedures and external competitors' performance to improve their operations. These are often seen as commercial or areas where it is difficult to agree on an acceptable goal. Method: In 2019, 1158 laboratories from 17 countries/regions in the asia Pacific Region answered the survey, including 399 Chinese sites. The survey collected information on quality, turnaround time and productivity. Results: Median productivity for laboratories in the asia Pacific Region not including Chinese sites was 25 samples/FTE/day for small laboratories (workload: <250 samples/day), 100 for medium-sized laboratories (workload: 251-1000 samples/day) and 220 for large laboratories (workload: >1001 samples/day). The parameters associated with increased productivity in some laboratories were automation, middleware, Lean Six Sigma quality improvement activities and International Accreditation. Conclusion: This survey provides evidence of an association of quality improvement activities on laboratory productivity. There are differences in the effect of these activities in Chinese and non-Chinese laboratories in the asia Pacific Region. The survey confirmed that the implementation of automation is associated with increased median productivity in all sites. Implementation of Lean Six Sigma and International Accreditation is associated with increased productivity in large laboratories.

Climate change adaptation through nature-based solution: examining the case of Thakurani Khal of Mongla Port Municipality, Bagerhat Bangladesh

Purpose - Urban areas, especially in the coastal region of Bangladesh, face environmental degradation due to rapid urbanization, uncontrolled socio-economic activities and experiencing the adverse impacts of climate change. Nature-based solutions (NbS) as options for restoring, preserving, maintaining and elevating natural features or systems are becoming popular for reducing vulnerabilities caused either by natural hazards or human-induced activities. With this understanding, this study aims to explore the need of practicing NbS by studying the condition of a tidal canal (known as Thakurani Khal) and its peripheral areas of Mongla Port Municipality, a coastal and seaport town in ***/methodology/approach - This case study-based research uses multiple inquiries, including focus group discussions, pair-wise comparison, observation, GIS-based mapping, key informant interviews and secondary climate data review, to understand the spatial development of the area and community reactions to the changes in the urban *** - The natural water flow of this canal is controlled by sluice gates that indirectly allowed the dweller to encroach its lands and convert the canal into a solid waste dumping area. These human-induced activities as well as the climate change-induced events (i.e. extreme heat, intensive and irregular rainfall, increased number of cyclones, etc.) have made the adjacent areas prone to waterlogging and drainage congestion. In this context, the revival of the original natural quality of the canal has been identified as an alternative to ensuring an adaptive urban ***/value - This research highlights the importance of practicing NbS for developing urban resilience in the context of climate change.

Putting ‘STOP’ to Excess Caries of Cleft Lip and Palate Patients

Background: Cleft lip with/without palate (CL/P) patients require multiple interdisciplinary procedures at different phases of their life. CL/P patients have a high burden of care that has financial repercussion, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Lowering preventable diseases such as caries can mitigate this challenge. Aim: To systematically review literature across databases to assess the quantum of caries incidence in CL/P patients in India. Subsequently, to suggest to aim for caries prevention in pilot centres and develop long-term strategies for overcoming the challenges encountered with the implementation of a suitable preventative program such as ‘STOP’ (Smile Train Oral Health through Prevention). Material and methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted from the databases till December 2023 across Medline/PubMed, Scopus, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. The studies utilised standardised assessments, employing the DMFT, dmft, or ICDAS index for caries prevalence in cleft individuals in India. Studies meeting predefined eligibility criteria were included and assessed for methodological quality. Data on caries incidence in CL/P patients in India was extracted from included studies. Results: The current research highlights a trend towards a higher caries incidence in cleft individuals in India. Thus the need for preventative program becomes important. Conclusion: Caries, which is preventable, is an additional burden both in terms of financial impact as well as chances of failure of clinical procedures. Suggested solution: STOP includes age-appropriate anticipatory guidance, preventive and minimally invasive treatment, and definitive oral health management. The outcomes of the pilot program in 4 centres in India can become the starting point for strategies involving the prevention of caries to limit the burden of care in CL/P patients. Discontinuation of HIV oral pre-exposure prophylaxis: findings from programmatic surveillance within two general population HIV programs in Nigeria

Background As oral PrEP scales up in Nigeria, information about uptake, use pattern and client preference in a real-world, implementation setting is invaluable to guide refining service provision and incorporation of oral PrEP and other prevention measures into routine health services. To add to this body of knowledge, our study examines factors associated with discontinuation of PrEP among HIV negative individuals across two large scale programs in *** Using program implementation data from two large-scale HIV projects in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states in Nigeria between January 2020 and July 2021, we used logistic regression to explore factors associated with early discontinuation (i.e., stopping PrEP within one month of starting) among HIV-negative individuals who initiated PrEP in the *** Of a total of 26,325 clients;22,034 (84%) discontinued PrEP within the first month. The odds of PrEP discontinuation were higher among clients who enrolled in community-based distribution sites (aOR 2.72;95% C.I: 2.50-2.96) compared to those who enrolled in program-supported facilities and never married (aOR 1.76;95% C.I: 1.61-1.92) compared to married clients. Clients who initiated PrEP because of high-risk sexual behaviour (aOR 1.15, 95% C.I 1.03-1.30) or inconsistent use or non-use of condoms (aOR 1.96, 95% C.I 1.60-2.41) had greater odds of discontinuing PrEPthan those who initiated PrEP because they were in a serodifferent *** The behavioural and demographic factors associated with early discontinuation of PrEP suggest that risk stratification of pre-initiation and follow up counselling may be helpful in raising continuation rates. On the service delivery side, strategies to strengthen follow-up services provided by community-based distribution sites need to be introduced. Overall, the low continuation rate calls for a review of programmatic approaches in provision of PrEP services in Nigeria.

Lonicerae japonicae (L. japonicae) flos is a medical and food homology herb. This study investigated the phenolic acid and flavonoid contents in L. japonicae flos water extract solution (LJWES) and the preventive effects of LJWES against liver fibrogenesis via FL83B cells and rats. LJWES contains many polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acid, morin, and epicatechin. This article (re)discovers a hidden history of religious pluralism in Afghanistan. First, through exploring the history of Hanafi Islam centered on the idea of "adamiyyah";and second, through an analysis of the constitutional manifestations of these religious ideas of equality in two constitutions, Amir Amanullah's in 1923 and Nadir Khan's in 1931. These take center stage in this article after a rich discussion of ideas of equality in Hanafi Islam. In this moment, as peace negotiations continue, it is necessary to explore the hidden history of religious pluralism in Afghanistan. This pluralist past may help create a peaceful future.

In powder bed additive manufacturing part production, test coupons are often printed together with the actual parts. However, the amount of material required for the tensile test coupons based on current standards are large compared with typical powder bed component sizes. The shortest gauge length for rectangular tensile specimens is 25 mm for the ASTM E8/E8M subsize specimen 6 mm wide. In this work, a scaled-down version of the subsize specimen 6 mm wide with a gauge length of 12.5 mm was tested in a commercially available universal testing frame. The tensile results of this specimen were validated against the standard specimen using clip-on and video extensometers. The thickness range and width tolerance range of the specimen was also investigated. The usage of this specimen was demonstrated in capturing the orientation effects on tensile properties in a laser powder bed fusion machine. Copyright © 2022 by ASTM International.
