This paper presents numerical investigations on the seismic behavior of full-scale square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. The main objective is to understand the seismic behavior and evaluate the seismic performance of these composite columns under high levels of axial compression. Finite element analysis (FEA) models in ABAQUS software were used to simulate a series of columns subjected to axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. The CFST columns were modeled using eight-node reduced integration brick elements (C3D8R) for the infilled concrete with confinement effect, and four-node reduced integration shell elements (S4R) for the steel tube with consideration of steel-concrete interaction and steel wall’s buckling. The feasibility of the FEA models has been validated by published experimental results. The validated FEA model was further extended to conduct parametric studies with various parameters including width-to-thickness ratio (B/t), concrete strength, and axial compression level. The numerical analysis results reveal that with the same B/t and constituent materials, the higher the axial compression was, the lower the shear strength and the deformation capacity were. Also, the higher axial compression led to earlier local buckling of the steel tube, especially, in the case of the thinner steel wall (B/t of 41.7). The thicker steel wall (B/t of 20.8) resulted in higher strength and larger deformation capacity of the column. Increasing concrete material strength significantly improved the column’s shear strength for both thinner and thicker steel walls, but it led to significant development in deformation for the column having thicker steel walls. This study also reveals that only the square CFST columns with B/t of 20.8 using medium material strengths satisfy the seismic performance demand for the building columns in high seismic zones (ultimate interstory drift ratio (IDRu) not less than 3% radian) under high axial compression (up to 55% of

Key Risk Factors of Prefabricated Building Supply Chain Based on Social Network Analysis

Current research on the supply chain risks of prefabricated construction mainly treats risk factors as isolated points, lacking a comprehensive analysis of the interplay between these factors. Taking a stakeholder perspective and a full lifecycle approach, employing the SCOR(supply chain operations reference) model to identify risk factors, a risk assessment model based on social network analysis was constructed to investigate the risk factors and their interactions in the supply chain of prefabricated construction. By calculating various SNA(social network analysis) indicators, key risks and critical relationships were determined. Finally, risk control measures were proposed and the effectiveness of risk response was evaluated. This result provides an effective method for evaluating and mitigating supply chain risks in prefabricated construction, enhancing the effectiveness and accuracy of risk control for all stakeholders involved. © 2024 Beijing Kexue Jishu yu Gongcheng Zazhishe. Modular buildings are built using factory manufactured building units or modules that are transported and assembled on-site. Among the many different types used, modules of volumetric form analogous to intermodal freight containers have the greatest potential to achieve complete building systems or fully-modular building systems where on-site work could be reduced to foundation, module assembly and the finishing of module-to-module interfaces as required. However, despite the many reported benefits, volumetric module use has some technical, logistical and regulatory issues that have constrained its widespread application. Two of such issues that have been widely reported are the lack of efficient structural systems for lateral load transfer and the lack of high-performance inter-module connections that can not only meet structural demands but can also fulfil certain constructional and manufacturing needs as well. Therefore, this paper focuses specifically on the latter of the two identified issues and briefly summarises the work conducted into its resolution. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A polymeric cationic asphalt emulsifier for low-carbon and renewable pavements: Investigating its dual effects of modification and emulsification on asphalt

Traditional cationic emulsifiers can cause a noticeable reduction in the low-temperature deformability of asphalt, while the moisture stability and durability of emulsified asphalt pavements fail to meet the standards of high-grade highways. Modification of emulsifiers by polymeric materials provides an effective solution to these problems. In this study, a polymeric cationic asphalt emulsifier (PCAE) with multiple active groups was prepared based on the free radical polymerization method, which can serve the dual effects of emulsification and modification. The surface activity of PCAE was compared with that of three ordinary cationic emulsifiers (EA, CSR, and KZW) for cold recycling by critical micelle concentration, while the droplet size distribution and storage stability of different emulsified asphalts were tested. To evaluate the modifying effect of the polymeric emulsifier on asphalt, dynamic shear rheometer, bending beam rheometer, and contact angle tests were performed on base asphalt and asphalt residues. Experimental results indicate that PCAE outperforms traditional cationic emulsifiers in emulsifying ability, and the emulsified asphalt prepared with PCAE demonstrates a steric hindrance effect and excellent storage stability. PCAE enhances the high-temperature deformation resistance of asphalt and causes less detrimental impact on the low-temperature ductility. Adding PCAE can effectively improve the creep recovery capacity and fatigue life of asphalt, but ordinary emulsifiers show limited improvement. Furthermore, PCAE can enhance asphalt-aggregate adhesion under both dry and wet conditions, whereas traditional emulsifiers risk impairing adhesion despite increasing the surface free energy. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Mixing Recycled Asphalt Binder (RAP) with fresh asphalt mixture offers both environmental and economic advantages. However, the aged asphalt binder in RAP presents a significant challenge in sustainable asphalt pavement construction. One of sustainable approach is by using Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) to bring back the original properties of aged asphalt. Although, WCO ability to soften the aged binder is already established, its ability to improve the binder ability to resist the ageing is remain unknown. Researchers have recently explored the potential of using WCO as a sustainable rejuvenator for RAP, aiming to improve the binder's resistance to ageing. This review covers important topics such the oxidative ageing mechanism in asphalt binders, ageing simulation techniques, the effectiveness of WCO in restoring the RAP properties, and WCO performance to increase asphalt ageing resistance. Through a comprehensive analysis of numerous prior studies, this review sheds light on the impact of WCO on the rheological characteristics, ageing resistance, and mechanical performance of the rejuvenated asphalt binder. The results from the examined literature are that WCO can be utilized as a sustainable rejuvenator in RAP by increase the durability and ageing resistance of binder. This review also points out some of the asphalt binder ageing factors are remains unknown which can be investigate for future research in this field. Ultimately, this review can be referred as a guidance to index and track the ageing factors in rejuvenated RAP by evaluates its characteristics and properties. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. The compaction effect of extra-long prestressed high-strength concrete (PHC) piles in deep soft soil foundation was studied by field test. The pore water pressure gauge, inclinometer were embedded in different plane positions or different depths of the foundation to monitor the pore pressure and deformation of the foundation when driving pile. The research shows that the magnitude of excess pore water pressure caused by single pile installation is mainly related to buried depth of the measuring point and the linear distance between the pile tip and the measuring point. The shorter the distance or the deeper the depth is, the greater the excess pore pressure caused by pile installation. The horizontal influence radius of pile compacting on the pore water pressure is about 10.7 m. The excess pore pressure induced by pile installation increases with depth, and is obviously affected by stratum properties. In the vicinity of soil with high permeability coefficient, such as thin sand layer or silty fine sand layer, the excess pore pressure cannot be accumulated in a large amount. The existing subgrade obviously restricts the lateral deformation of soil between piles and PHC piles. The pile deformation is small at the top and bottom, and large in the middle. The inflection point of the deformation curve appears at the pile connection position. The relationship the excess pore pressure of the measuring point with the depth and distance of the measuring point is given. © 2023, The Author(s).

Comparative analysis of infiltration and pore clogging effects in pervious concrete

This paper dealt with the examination of infiltration and pore clogging effects in pervious concrete. Experimental investigation was carried out by considering two aggregate sizes such as 6.3 mm and 12.5 mm and totally six numbers of mixes were produced with the aforesaid aggregate sizes using various binders. Binders such as PPC and Lime – Gypsum – Fly ash (FaL-G) were used in the present study. The obtained results are related with the results of conventional control mix OPC. Strength property test results proved that, mix made with OPC showed higher mechanical property test results when compared with PPC and FaL-G binders. In case of aggregate size, mix containing equal grading of 6.3 mm and 12.5 mm shows better strength properties than single sized aggregate (6.3 mm and 12.5 mm). This can be attributed to the fact that, increased specific surface area in the mix results in increased strength properties. Besides, by progressively introducing clogging materials, clogging study has been conducted in the porous concrete. Permeability coefficient and clogging effect study was examined by using falling head permeability method. Mix made with 12.5 mm aggregate size revealed better clogging resistance than grading mix and smaller size mix. Furthermore, periodic maintenance is highly essential in pervious concrete pavement for having better long-lasting performance. However, properties of all the mixes satisfied the minimum requirement criteria of pervious concrete. © 2023

Electricity consumption characteristics and prediction model of a large airport terminal in Beijing

The large airport terminal is the city's transportation hub and logistics center, and its building electricity consumption is twice or even higher than that of general large public buildings. Energy-saving and consumption reduction of the terminal building is not only the need to improve the operational efficiency and reduce the operation cost of the airport but also the need to realize the goal of "double carbon" in China. In this study, a large airport terminal in Beijing is taken as the research object. According to the characteristics of its main electrical equipment system, and the measured data of passenger flow from January 2020 to February 2023, combined with Pearson correlation analysis, K-means cluster analysis and multiple regression analysis, the influence and correlation characteristics of building scale, passenger flow and outdoor meteorological parameters on its electricity consumption are analyzed. The results show that: 1) The daily electricity consumption of the terminal can be analyzed by five levels according to the daily passenger flow, namely, 10,000 < N ≤ 30,000,30,000 < N ≤ 50,000, 50,000 < N ≤ 70,000, 70,000 < N ≤ 100,000, and 100,000 < N ≤ 130,000; 2) The electricity consumption of the terminal can be divided into three categories: basic electricity consumption related to the building scale of the terminal, variable electricity consumption I related to passenger flow, and variable electricity consumption II related to outdoor air temperature and passenger flow. Based on this, the terminal's daily electricity consumption prediction model is constructed, and the measured data verify the model's effectiveness. 3) Put forward the evaluation reference value of the daily electricity consumption of different passenger flow in this terminal, When the year passenger flow reaches the design value of 45 million, the normal daily electricity consumption level ranges from 0.44 to 0.48 kW·h/(m2·day). The students at Youngstown State University (YSU) are required to complete two courses, Specifications and Estimating (CCET 3711) and Hydraulics and Land Development (CCET 3724) at the end of the associate's program. Professor Sanson instructs the Specifications and Estimating course and Professor Korenic instructs the Hydraulics and Land Development course and have combined the final project of these two courses into a mini-capstone. This paper will describe how the mini-capstone project has been developed, the instruction the students receive in each of the courses, how the students implement the instruction in the capstone project, and the components that make up the project. The outcomes detailed and assessed in this paper are based on student performance and pertain to how well the students work as a team. Also assessed are how well each student was able to implement concepts learned in each class, which include estimating various aspects of a real construction project as well as their ability to determine the storm water volume quantities, specify erosion and sedimentation control measures, and design an appropriate storm water detention structure. The culminating event of the project is a professional oral presentation in which the students compile their findings of each aspect of the mini-capstone project. Manual damage identification from large visual inspection data sources demands tremendous effort and is prone to discrepancies due to human errors, fatigue, and poor judgments of bridge inspectors. Deep learning techniques have obtained state-of-the-art results in solving computer vision tasks across different domains such as health, retail, among others. To encourage the development of automated visual inspection and damage detection solutions in the realm of infrastructure management, we propose BiNet, a visual inspection dataset for multi-label damage identification that can be used for classification, localisation, and object detection. We have investigated and compared the performance of convolutional neural networks and transfer learning approaches for automated damage classification and localisation. We have established baseline performance results of BiNet for future comparisons. Our contribution is introducing the public well-curated bridge visual inspection dataset and a deep learning approach for automated damage detection.
