Evaluation of activated sludge properties’changes in industrial-wastewater pre-treatment:role of residual aluminum hydrolyzed species with different polymerization degree

With the widespread introduction of pre-coagulation prior to the biological unit in various industrial wastewater treatments,it is noteworthy that long-term accumulation of residual coagulants has certains effect on both micro and macro characteristics of activated sludge(AS).In this study,the morphology distributions of residual aluminum salts(RAS)and their effects on the removal efficiency of AS were investigated under different PAC *** results showed that the dominance of medium polymeric RAS,formed under an appropriate PAC dose of 20 mg/L enhanced the hydrophobicity,flocculation,and sedimentation performances of AS,as well as the enzymatic activity in cells in the sludge system,improving the main pollutants removal efficiency of the treatment *** the species composition with monomer and dimer/high polymer RAS as the overwhelming parts under an over-dosed PAC concentration of 55 mg/L resulted in excessive secretion of EPS with loose flocs structure and conspicuous inhibition of cellular activity,leading to the deterioration of physico-chemical and biological properties of *** on these findings,this study can shed light on the role of the RAS hydrolyzed species distributions,closely relevant to Al dosage,in affecting the comprehensive properties of AS and provide a theoretical reference for coagulants dosage precise control in the pretreatment of industrial wastewater.

Assessing the Applicability of Fine Copper Slag in Road and Structural Fill Application

Mineral wealth is declining over the globe, but waste generation from many industries is increasing. As a consequence, the researchers started exploring alternative minerals that might be used instead of sand. Researchers revealed that silica-containing materials such as stone dust, copper slag, coal fly ash, carbonate sand, and others might be used to replace sand. The feasibility of employing copper slag as a fine aggregate alternative was investigated in this article. Copper slag is a by-product of the flotation and filtration processes used to extract copper from ore with high concentrations of copper. With an annual production of roughly 2.5 million tonnes, the total quantity of fine copper slag produced is currently above three million metric tonnes (MT). Copper slag (CS) is a sulfur-free waste product from copper roasting. It was found that the use of CS as a fine aggregate (60 percent) to replace fine aggregates in road construction was investigated. The use of fine copper slag in the building of embankment/subgrade fill would surely add value by minimizing waste accumulation on fertile land on the one hand and resource mining on the other. The current study focuses on specific gravity, an important property of any construction material, and a need for the design process. The material's Grain Size Distribution is also investigated to determine the particle size distribution. The quantity of Copper Slag that should be used to replace the fine aggregates is established via a trial and error procedure. Finally, the viability of the material proposed to be used in the subgrade layer, i.e., Copper Slag, is checked by analysis pertaining to the cost aspect of the roadway. © 2022

A hybrid light GBM and Harris Hawks optimization approach for forecasting construction project performance: enhancing schedule and budget predictions

The study investigates machine learning applications in civil engineering, which are biased towards construction management. The hybrid model was developed for better schedule deviation and budget overrun performance, based on Harris Hawks Optimization combined with Light GBM. Using HHO for feature selection, the model identified the most influencing factors like Project Size, Risk Score, and Change Orders. This optimized the prediction process. This hybrid approach outperformed the traditional machine learning models, including Random Forest and XGBoost, by an optimum RMSE of 15.32 days schedule deviations and $25,840 budget overruns, proving more accurate and efficient. Therefore, this underpins the potential AI-driven solutions for improving project planning, risk mitigation, and decision-making within construction management. Future work will need to refine models as artificial intelligence becomes integrated into practice within civil engineering. Additional predictive variables will be further investigated while extending the approach to other areas of construction management and civil engineering applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Reinforced concrete (RC) is commonly used in modern building construction. Steel reinforcement (or rebar) design and fabrication are important tasks for the construction of RC buildings. However, these processes are currently conducted semi-automatic, requiring large human effort and processing time. Besides, there is a lack of efficient approach for progress monitoring of onsite rebar installation, and the deviation between actual rebar layout and as-design model can not be accurately analyzed and recorded. Therefore, this study aims to develop an openBIM-based framework for rebar lifecycle management, concerning the design, manufacturing, assembly, renewal and demolition. Firstly, an automatic clash-free rebar design optimization approach is proposed integrating optimization algorithms and AI techniques. Secondly, A open digital workflow based on information delivery manual (IDM), model view definition (MVD), and Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), and the integration with machine fabrication code is developed to support rebar prefabrication. Thirdly, a BIM-based progress monitoring approach is proposed integrating laser scanning, while the rebar BIM model is updated with as-built data. Moreover, the applications of as-built rebar BIM model in maintenance, renewal and demolition are discussed. © 2024 ISARC. All Rights Reserved.

Selective super-wetting surfaces maintain the contrasting super-wetting properties for the oil and the water, and that have received widespread attention since 2000 due to their high surface energy, particularly in oil-water separation applications. Concerning about these surfaces, superoleophobic/superhydrophilic surfaces are effective due to their oil-repellent *** this paper, Ultraviolet light polymerization was used to polymerize fluorinated substances (TFOA) and hydrophilic substances (MMA), forming a coating on chemically etched copper foam. The resulting porous copper foam exhibited superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity, facilitating effective oil-water separation tests. The fluorinated substances imparted oleophobic properties to the surface, while the hydrophilic substances provided hydrophilic characteristics to the copper foam. Wear resistance tests using sandpaper and a Taber abrasion tester confirmed that the copper foam exhibits good mechanical durability. The superoleophobic/superhydrophilic copper foam can offer the solution that can overcome continuous oil/water separation process, and help us develop antifouling fabrics, together with self-cleaning surfaces. © 2025 SPIE.

Because of actual requirement,shield machine always excavates with an inclined angle in longitudinal *** many previous studies mainly focus on the face stability of the horizontal shield tunnel,the effects of tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure on the face stability of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel are not well investigated.A failure mechanism of a longitudinally inclined shield tunnel face is constructed based on the spatial discretization technique and the tensile strength cut-off criterion is introduced to modify the constructed failure *** pore water pressure is introduced as an external force into the equation of virtual work and the objective function of the chamber pressure of the shield machine is ***,the critical chamber pressure of the longitudinally inclined shield tunnel is computed by optimal *** analysis indicates that both tensile strength cut-off and pore water pressure have a significant impact on the chamber pressure and the range of the collapse ***,the theoretical results are compared with the numerical results calculated by FLAC3D software which proves that the proposed approach is effective.

In recent years, the development of prefabricated buildings has been significantly promoted by China's policy initiatives focusing on innovation, green development, and industrialization in the construction sector. This paper explores the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) collaborative design technology in the construction of intelligent buildings with prefabricated steel structures. Using the Zhangjiawo Sports Park Project as a case study, we detail the integration of digital design, industrial production, and intelligent construction methodologies. The project leverages BIM for precise modeling (LOD400), optimizing construction through collision analysis, and enhancing natural lighting and ventilation via simulation tools. The prefabrication process employs advanced steel structure manufacturing techniques and intelligent logistics, while on-site construction utilizes automated systems, such as ALC wall panel installation robots. These innovations not only improve construction efficiency and safety but also align with national low-carbon and sustainable development goals. The findings provide valuable insights into the benefits and implementation strategies of BIM and intelligent construction technologies in prefabricated building projects. © 2024 The Authors. Despite the significant environmental impacts of the construction industry, the sector lacks practical decision-making tools to increase material reuse. Building Information Modelling (BIM) can address this by facilitating data-driven decision-making. Total BIM, a growing trend in the Nordic region, implements model-based design and construction with a single source of information. This research presents a case study of a Total BIM office renovation project, where innovative BIM and digitalisation processes were implemented to increase material reuse. These processes enabled proactive, data-driven decision-making, minimising CO2 emissions. The building's concrete structure was preserved, and various components such as plasterboards, radiators, ceiling panels, doors were all reused and evaluated for CO2 emissions. The Total BIM approach was enhanced by attaching material reuse data to objects to reduce waste. The data draws on interviews, workshops and a study visit from a unique case study project in Sweden. Findings highlight how tougher emissions regulations could be the tipping point for pushing BIM implementation in projects as we think about constructing for the future. © ARCOM *** rights reserved.

The building sector is responsible for 36% of total energy consumption and one-third of the energy related greenhouse gas emissions around the world. There is an urgent need to reduce energy consumption and emissions from this sector. Previous studies investigated various ways to reduce operational carbon emissions by constructing net zero energy and emissions buildings. Nonetheless, reducing and offsetting embodied carbon emissions is still a challenge. This research investigated the potential of a Net Positive House to offset its embodied and operational carbon emission through two real world case studies. Net Positive Houses produce more energy than they consume, offering the potential to offset carbon emissions. The results revealed that the operation of these Net Positive Houses produced on average 6.6 times and 4.2 times more energy than they consumed over a full year. Net Positive Houses have the potential to not only achieve carbon neutrality in their operational phase, but also generate carbon credits for offsetting other carbon emissions. The two case study houses can offset their embodied carbon within approximately 3 years and 4.5 years depending on the occupants behavior. The battery storage was found to be more effective in terms of energy, cost and emissions savings for houses with higher energy consumption. These finding suggests that Net Positive Houses can play a crucial role in mitigating carbon emissions and advancing sustainability goals. © 2023 IEEE.

A healthy and safe workplace remains a priority for workers in the steel industry. Historical facts show that this industry's procedure was difficult and dangerous. Accidents were bound to happen in such a scenario. The establishment of a culture where safety and health are given top priority and are not to be compromised demands a strong commitment to these issues. In addition to looking at the accidents and health issues that arise during work in the steel sector, this research also looks into their causal factors. A quantitative phase has been undertaken after a qualitative one. The approach of Quadrant Distribution (QD) is used to determine the most important workplace accident and health issues. The reasons are prioritized using Relative Importance Weight (RIW). This study concludes that falls at ground level, striking against and Slip are the three major occupational accidents that occur in the steel industry. Similarly, Lung irritation, Throat irritation, and Heatstroke are the three major health problems. It is also observed that Worker negligence of safety practices, Inadequate supervision, Lack of safety meetings, Coordination gap, Insecure methods tasks, and Lack of training are the major causes of such occupational accidents and health problems. © 2023 ACM.
