Groundwater level change stands a momentous role in affecting the geotechnical construction stability and safety of underground *** warming and active underground construction cause conspicuous changes in the groundwater level,which further leaves an impact on the underground structures’*** reveal the interaction between underground structure and soil under groundwater level change in the sand layer,model tests of circular transportation tunnel and rectangular utility tunnel were carried *** the self-designed experimental equipment and innovative experimental methods,the changes in tunnel stress,bending moment,buoyancy,and vertical displacement of the rise and drawdown of the groundwater level in the sand layer were *** results revealed the developments of concentrated structural forces during the rising and falling process of the groundwater water level,indi-cating critical locations that should be ***,both tunnels showed the same movement trend:settling first,floating afterwards and settling at *** it is concluded that no reduction is required when calculating buoyancy in sands using measured pore *** can provide a notable reference for future related research and engineering designs.

This paper presents an experimental study on the effect of the steel reinforcement ratio on time-dependent deflections in hybrid glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP)/steel reinforced concrete (RC) beams (HGSRC beam). Three HGSRC beams and one reference GFRP RC beam were cast and tested under sustained load for a period of 180 days in varying environmental conditions. The longitudinal steel reinforcement ratio was varied to achieve a range from 0 to 1.08%. The results revealed that the steel reinforcement ratio had a remarkable impact on the time-dependent deflections of HGSRC beams. Moreover, the experimental time-dependent deflections of HGSRC beams were compared with theoretical values derived from design equations for fiber-reinforced polymer RC structures found in ACI 440.1R-15. The outcome showed that this design standard overestimated the long-term deflection of HGSRC beams. Also, a design method based on ACI 440.1R-15 with experimentally based adjusted time-dependent factors was presented for HGSRC beams. The predicted deflection values using the proposed method were found to be highly consistent with the experimental ones. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Large-span roof structures are sensitive to wind loads, and the values taken by the code usually cannot meet the design requirements. By conducting scaled rigid model wind pressure tests on a large-span irregular roof in Xi'an, the wind pressure coefficients of the cantilevered curved roof under different wind directions were systematically analyzed. The results show that the roof is mainly subjected to negative pressure, with local positive pressure at the eaves and on the upper surface of the north building. Strong suction zones are easily formed at the top of the roof in the south building and on the upper surface of the north building. The structural strength of the roof should be appropriately strengthened on the eaves and on the east side of the north building roof. The curtain walls of the south and north buildings are mainly subjected to negative pressure, with similar effects of wind loads on the various facades of the south building curtain wall and greater effects on the east and north facades of the north building curtain wall. The wind resistance of the west and south facades of the north building curtain wall should be strengthened. © 2025 SPIE.

In order to predict the slope stability, a method based on machine learning is put forward. By analyzing the slope instability characteristics, six typical slope parameters (pore water pressure, slope height) are selected and analyzed, and the corresponding evaluation data set is established. The slope stability model is established by using machine learning methods such as gradient hoist (GBM) and support vector machine (SVM), and verified by 50% cross-validation. By analyzing the characteristics of slope instability and combining with domestic slope cases, according to the sensitivity of characteristic parameters, the slope protection measures for different sensitive factors are put forward. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This study investigates the influences of coconut and polypropylene fibers (PP) on the performances of mortar containing fly ash as a sand replacement material. Fiber-to-cement ratio is 0.3%. Fly ash to fine aggregate ratios are 0, 10, and 20% by volume. Flow, compressive strength, flexural strength, and total shrinkage of mortar are studied. Based on the results, the flow of mortar containing fibers is decreased. The decreased flow of mortar with coconut fibers is more than that of mortar with PP fiber. The compressive strength of mixtures is slightly enhanced by using fibers. Only polypropylene fiber shows more effectiveness to enhance the flexural strength of mortar. The use of fly ash as a fine aggregate decreases the flow and increases the compressive strength of mortar. Total shrinkage of mortars is significantly reduced by using both coconut and polypropylene fibers. Overall, the mortar with polypropylene fiber shows better performance than coconut fiber mortar, especially mortars with fly ash as a sand replacement material. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Predicting the compressive strength of rubberized concrete incorporating brick powder based on MLP and RBF neural networks

The investigations on the performance of concrete incorporating waste materials hold promise in achieving sustainable construction. Although various studies have addressed the mechanical behaviour of concrete containing waste tyre rubber (WTR) and clay brick powder (CBP), an advanced understanding of predicting the compressive strength of such concrete remains underdeveloped. In this study, predicting the compressive strength of rubberized concrete incorporating CBP using the artificial neural network (ANN)-based models is proposed for the first time. The prediction is based on multilayer perceptron (MLP) and radial basis function (RBF) neural networks. It is shown that MLP is superior in predicting the compressive strength of rubberized concrete incorporating CBP compared with RBF. However, regardless of the algorithm used, the R² and adjusted R² values are higher than 0.75. Results on Pearson's r values greater than 0.85 illustrate higher predictive abilities of the neural networks. Moreover, the study demonstrates that it is not possible to obtain significant relationships between the individual independent variables of rubberized concrete incorporating CBP and concrete compressive strength. The ANN-based models in this research contribute towards an understanding of predicting the compressive strength of rubberized concrete incorporating CBP, which can inspire further modeling studies involving such materials. © 2025 The Authors

The global demand for energy has experienced a significant rise. The thermal performance of conventional concrete has been extensively studied, but there is still a significant amount of research needed to understand the effects of synthetic fibres on the thermal properties of lightweight foamed concrete (LFC). LFC popularity in the construction industry has increased rapidly due to the many benefits it offers over conventional concrete. Therefore, the goal of this study is to investigate the feasibility of incorporating polypropylene fibrillated fibre (PFF) into LFC to improve its thermal properties. The PFF was integrated into the LFC in diverse weight fractions, between 1% to 4%. Density of 1080 kg/m3 was made and evaluated. Spreadability, permeable porosity, conductivity, diffusivity and specific heat capacity were determined. The findings demonstrate that spreadability of fresh mix decreased when the weight fractions of PFF were increased from 0% (250 mm) to 4% (239 mm). The incorporation of 3% PFF to LFC greatly improves its conductivity and diffusivity. Specifically, the thermal conductivity decreases from 0.3307 W/mK (in the control) to 0.2643 W/mK, and the diffusivity decreases from 0.4426 m2/s (in the control) to 0.3843 m2/s. Compared to the control specimen, LFC’s porosity increased slightly from 43.6% to 44.9% when 3% PFF was added. The findings revealed that the PFF possesses significant underlying potential for utilisation in cementitious materials, potentially serving a pivotal function in either reducing the thermal-inducing property or improving the heat transfer of the concrete. The utilisation of LFC-PFF composites may also result in significant energy savings. © 2024. The Author(s).
