Economic market uncertainties, such as those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, can make determining accurate prices estimate for construction materials a challenging task. While previous research focused on the contractual aspect of this issue by studying price escalation clauses, there is still a gap in the literature when it comes to proposing an accurate pricing model. Thus, this study develops an accurate pricing-estimate game-theoretical model that can efficiently and competitively account for escalations in construction materials prices during uncertain market conditions. First, data on past Producer Price Indexes (PPIs) of different construction materials were collected. Second, the percentage changes in the prices of four common construction materials, including asphalt, aggregates, non-reinforced concrete, and steel reinforcement, were calculated. Third, an algorithmic game theory model that leverages learning from historical bid data was proposed. The findings provided insights on how to account for construction materials price escalation under uncertain market conditions. Overall, this study contributes to the growing body of research related to construction materials price escalation under uncertain market conditions by proposing a practical approach that combines predictive modeling with game theory models. © 2024 ASCE.

Influence of the Boundary Conditions of Simply Supported Beam Bridge with Different Spans on the Seismic Design of Continuous Beam Bridge System

The boundary conditions of simply supported beam bridges with different spans affect the calculation accuracy of continuous beam bridges. A (48 + 80 + 48) m prestressed concrete continuous beam bridge is selected as the analysis object to improve efficiency while ensuring accuracy. The influence of the different boundary conditions on the seismic response of the continuous beam bridge system is studied. Firstly, SAP2000 software is used to establish the finite element analysis model of the system with different boundary conditions. Then, dynamic characteristic calculations and nonlinear time-history calculations are carried out. Finally, the results obtained under the different boundary conditions are compared. The results show that the system’s natural period under different boundary conditions is the same and other periods increase with an increase in the span number of boundary conditions. The different boundary conditions change the order of vibration modes of the system. The system’s track irregularity is mainly longwave irregularities. The results tend to be stable with the increase of the span number of boundary conditions. When the span number reaches 3, the results are stable, and the errors are less than 5%. We suggest taking the three spans simply supported beam bridge as the boundary condition of the continuous beam bridge system in the finite element model to ensure accuracy and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Shiraz University 2024.

Physical modeling of long-term dynamic characteristics of the subgrade for medium-low-speed maglevs

To investigate the dynamic characteristics and long-term dynamic stability of the new subgrade structure of medium-low-speed(MLS)maglevs,cyclic vibration tests were performed under natural and rainfall conditions,and the dynamic response of the subgrade structure was *** dynamic response attenuation characteristics along the depth direction of the subgrade were compared,and the distribution characteristics of the dynamic stress on the surface of the subgrade along the longitudinal direction of the line were *** critical dynamic stress and cumulative deformation were used as indicators to evaluate the long-term dynamic stability of the *** show that water has a certain effect on the dynamic characteristics of the subgrade,and the dynamic stress and acceleration increase with the water *** the dowel steel structure set between the rail-bearing beams,stress concentration at the end of the loaded beam can be prevented,and the diffusion distance of the dynamic stress along the longitudinal direction *** dynamic stress measured in the subgrade bed range is less than 1/5 of the critical dynamic *** postconstruction settlement of the subgrade after similarity ratio conversion is 3.94 mm and 7.72 mm under natural and rainfall conditions,respectively,and both values are less than the 30 mm limit,indicating that the MLS maglev subgrade structure has good long-term dynamic stability.

Re-using bottom ash (BA) and fly ash (FA) can decrease disposal volumes and cost while also reducing dependence on non-renewable resources for sustainable aims in geotechnical applications. This study investigated the modification of the physicochemical and engineering properties of coal bottom and fly ash (BFA) with poly-vinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) at concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 2.5%. The different mixture ratios were denoted as BA100, BA60 FA40, BA40 FA60, and FA100. The proportion of BA40 FA60 modified with SLS at a concentration of 2.5% yielded a mildly alkaline pH with a distinct surface morphology consisting of well-distributed, smooth, and fine particles. The modification by using PVA and SLS generated high maximum dry density, high optimum moisture content, and improved unconfined compressive strength values ranging from 8.36 to 22.14% as compared to unmodified specimens after a 28-day curing period. These results were attributed to PVA/SLS–coal ash electrostatic physical bonding. Lower permeabilities over time of similar mixtures were recorded, ranging from 5.22 × 10–4 to 5.29 × 10–4 cm s−1 in SLS solution concentrations ranging from 1.5 to 2.5%. These coal ash wastes showed no unique changes in terms of the variation of main oxide content and crystalline phase for alteration concentrations for both modifiers’ solutions. These findings indicate that the physicochemical and engineering properties can be strengthened via a modification process achieved by inducing the novel stability of electrostatic suspension. In turn, this can actively interact with other matrices, such as those intended for soil as well as polymer or composite materials. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2024.

When dynamic load is applied on a granular assembly,the time-dependent dynamic load and initial static load(such as gravity stress)act together on individual *** order to better understand how dynamic load triggers the micro-structure's evolution and furtherly the ensemble behavior of a granular assembly,we propose a criterion to recognize the major propagation path of dynamic load in 2D granular materials,called the“dynamic force chain”.Two steps are involved in recognizing dynamic force chains:(1)pick out particles with dynamic load larger than the threshold stress,where the attenuation of dynamic stress with distance is considered;(2)among which quasi-linear arrangement of three or more particles are identified as a force *** spatial distribution of dynamic force chains in indentation of granular materials provides a direct measure of dynamic load *** statistical evolution of dynamic force chains shows strong correlation with the indentation behaviors.

This research study is focused on stabilizing black cotton subgrade soil (BCS) predominantly found in many locations across western parts of Maharashtra, India. The study uses locally accessible materials such as cow dung and sugarcane bagasse. It has been used in the form of cow dung ash (CDA) and sugarcane bagasse ash (SBA) to substitute black cotton soil to improve its strength partially. The CDA and SBA were used for partial soil substitution in the ranges of 2.50%, 5.00%, 7.50%, 10.00%, 12.50% and 15.00%. The obtained results were checked with the original naturally available BCS to find the optimum content. The optimum moisture content rises, and dry density falls with the stabilization process. The trend of California Bearing Ratio test (CBR) increases and peaks at 10.00% partial substitution of soil by CDA and 7.50% partial substitution of soil by SBA, respectively and decreases for the following values. Hence, the optimum content is calculated as 10.00% for CDA and 7.50% for SBA, which shows substantial improvement in the CBR value, and helps to control the changes in volume. The CBR value for the optimum combination is augmented by almost 4 to 4.25 times the original CBR value of the BCS. The difference in pavement thickness is analyzed for the three conditions, and site-specific design thickness charts are produced and recommended for the improved soil subgrade using IITPave software. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This paper studies the Xishan fault zone with two staggered planes of Urumqi Metro Line 2, analyzes the deformation and mechanical characteristics of surrounding rock caused by tunnel construction under the condition of crossing the fault zone, and studies the characteristics of abnormal ground settlement at the outcrop of the fault zone caused by tunnel construction through the fault zone with the aid of Midas GTS/NX finite element simulation software, The control effect of pipe roof support on surrounding rock deformation and surface settlement anomaly caused by tunnel construction crossing fault zone is ana-lyzed. The research shows that: (1) In the process of advancing the working face, the settlement change curve of the three value points in the footwall, fracture zone and hanging wall of the Xishan fault zone is divided into three stages: the slow increase stage, the sudden increase stage and the stable stage of the settlement;(2) When the tunnel is supported by pipe shed, the stress change of the value point is small, the final cumulative settlement of the ground surface is small, and the pipe shed support effect of the tunnel crossing the fault zone is good. © Geology Resource Management and Sustainable Development *** rights reserved.

Scanned point clouds are high-value digital assets for the inspection and evaluation of tunnel structures. Segment segmentation of scanned point clouds is a prerequisite for measuring the deformation of segments. However, the semantic enrichment of point clouds can be time-consuming and labour-intensive. 3D deep learning (DL) has emerged as a viable means of analysing point clouds. To that end, this paper describes the development of an annotated high-quality and large-volume point cloud dataset for subsequent training and evaluation of 3D DL models. Data augmentation methods, including rotation and feature extending, are proposed to prepare the dataset, ensuring that features of the point clouds can be effectively captured by the 3D DL models. Data experiments are carried out using the popular 3D DL network ‘PointNet++’ to compare the influences of different data augmentation methods and network parameters. Satisfactory segmentation accuracy (mean interaction over union ~ 90%) is achieved by optimizing data augmentation methods and network parameters. The proposed automatic segmentation method shows promise to improve the efficiency of tunnel ring point cloud processing and facilitate the deformation inspection of segments. © 2024 The Author(s).
