Clean indoor air is vital for health in all settings, especially in locations where extreme climates restrict outdoor activity, such as in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). UAE summer temperatures routinely exceed 42°C (108°F), discouraging outdoor activity and limiting natural ventilation of structures. Yet, little research is available on indoor air quality in the UAE. To inform the design of a new indoor air quality program, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre commissioned a study to characterize and prioritize knowledge gaps on indoor air quality and its relationship to health in the UAE and to identify potential partners for the program. Research gaps and priorities were identified by a panel of 16 international and local indoor air quality experts through a two-day structured, in-person workshop and follow-up survey. Key partners were identified through a stakeholder mapping exercise and e-mail survey of 79 government agencies and nongovernment organizations. The expert panel concluded that the most important short-term research need is to characterize the major sources of indoor air pollution and the most frequently occurring pollutants. The panel recommended establishing a national indoor air quality observatory encompassing a wide range of settings, including residences, schools, mosques, healthcare facilities, shopping malls, and other public spaces. Indoor air quality monitors would be permanently placed to establish baseline indoor air quality, provide data to estimate source contributions, and enable tracking of changes over time. The stakeholder mapping exercise identified ten agencies that should be involved in planning, including the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, Department of Health–Abu Dhabi, Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, and Emirates Public Health Association. Mitigating of drying shrinkage in alkali-activated slag composites

Alkali activated slag composites are promising alternatives to be used as a replacement of Portland cement composites for different construction applications. However, despite the evolution of these composites over the years, its high drying shrinkage still poses a limitation on its application. The increasing interest in alkali-activated slag composites by the research community has resulted in the use of various methods and materials to mitigate the drying shrinkage. This current paper explores the different major types of mitigation techniques that can be used to reduce the drying shrinkage in alkali-activated composites. The mitigation techniques explored are in terms of the use of various materials and curing methods. Discussions presented in this paper showed that a significant reduction in the drying shrinkage can be achieved by partially replacing slag with mineral admixtures or incorporating chemical admixtures specifically made to reduce shrinkage. The use of appropriate internal or external curing method for alkali-activated slag was also found to reduce drying shrinkage effectively. However, it is recommended to carry out further research in order to fully understand the mechanism of drying shrinkage in alkali-activated slag composites in order to develop effective ways to mitigate it.

The present invention relates to an asphalt composition in which aggregates including steel slag having a maximum particle diameter of 10 mm are mixed, and provides: an asphalt composition of which the combined gradation is respectively 98-99.7％, 75-80％, 45-57％, 27-40％, 17-27％, 10-16％, 7-9％, and 4-6％ when sieve sizes are 10 mm, 5 mm, 2.5 mm, 1.2 mm, 0.6 mm, 0.3 mm, 0.15 mm, and 0.08 mm;and an asphalt paving method using the same, thereby having excellent durability, water resistance, and strength, and superior adhesive strength, shortening traffic control time, having good constructability, and being economical.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of urban roads: a literature review

With the ratification of the Paris climate agreement to avoid the uncompensated effects of climate change, 197 countries will have to dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. In the case of the urban space, roads are responsible for the consumption of 105M tons of bitumen and 115M tons of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, the reduction of the environmental impacts of road construction is becoming an urgent necessity. So far the vast majority of the Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been used to evaluate the environmental burdens of existing roads and new asphalt solutions. However, due to the different LCA methodological choices, recent studies have highlighted the difficulties in comparing the results of cases published in literature. Driven by this knowledge gap, the aim of the present study was to identify key aspects missing in the assessment of urban roads. Through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), 47 publications have been selected for further investigation. An intensive analysis of these documents clearly demonstrate the heterogeneity of the applied LCA methodological choices as well as the selected approaches regarding i.e. the goal of the studies, functional unit, system boundary, database and stratigraphy of the road pavement. Aiming to harmonize the LCA methodology, we have identified key aspects that require solutions for a robust LCA application. The results are expected to be useful for the National Road Administration (NRA) in assessing the environmental impacts of future urban road projects. As a response to the Paris climate agreement targets, the application of harmonized methods regarding LCA should lead to a more robust and structured process in terms of identifying low carbon urban road solutions and contributing to the SDGs respectively.

The W3C Linked Building Data on the Web community group discusses different potential patterns to associate values to properties of building elements. In this paper, we are interested in enabling a different value association method for these and other properties, to account for changes in time, or to annotate a value association with metadata such as provenance, reliability and origin data. Existing ontologies in the Architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry are reviewed first and we motivate the use of the Smart Energy-Aware Systems (SEAS) ontology as a starting point. Next, we list new competency questions to represent the aforementioned metadata and develop an extension of SEAS named the Ontology for Property Management (OPM). We illustrate the use of OPM with different scenarios where a value association needs to be annotated or updated in a dataset using SPARQL update queries. © 2018 CEUR-WS. All Rights Reserved.

In this experimental investigation, lightweight self-consolidating concrete (LWSCC) was developed with coconut shell as coarse aggregate. The effect of coconut shell aggregate (CSA) on bond strength and impact strength of Rice Husk Ash (RHA) based binary blended and RHA + Silica fume (SF) based ternary blended Self consolidating concrete (SCC) were determined. The bond strength was determined through pull-out test and the impact strength was calculated using falling weight test. The concrete mix was developed with the total powder content of 450 kg/m 3 . The coarse aggregate content was replaced by CSA in the gradation of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% in the designated SCC. The investigation revealed that the bond and impact strength of CSA based LWSCC were comparable to current code practice and other lightweight concretes. The experimental data obtained was used to develop an ANN model for predicting the strength characteristics of fresh or hardened concrete. The high regression values obtained during training the neural network models reveals high accuracy and were predicting the strength characteristics very similar to the experimental results.

Combing the current situation of cultural and creative industry parks in Xihu District of Hangzhou, analyzing the supporting elements of its layout, cultural and creative industry Pars in Xihu District have the characteristics of obvious group block distribution and the dominant function of each park is obviously influenced by the supporting elements. This paper selected four municipal cultural and creative industry parks for the investigation of their operating conditions. It is found out that the park construction performance of different construction foundation, positioning, development model is quite afferent. Therefore, it suggests that the creative industry park should be integrated with urban life, commerce, business and other functions. The park with weak ecological foundation should optimize the image of the park by means of urban renewal, and the policy should be inclined to retain talents and so on.

The Industrial Waste (phosphogypsum) is a waste product which was produced from the chemical industries. This waste material is used in concrete. It is ancient technique of converting the waste materials into value added products. When the industrial waste is utilized in construction industry, it may increase the availability of materials used for construction purpose and also reduces the expenditure made for disposal. It also reduces the pollution to the environment. The substitute material for changing materials used for laying pavement is got from industrial waste with agriculture based industrial waste. The main aim of this study deals with experimental investigation of test on concrete such as on compressive strength, flexural test, split tensile test, Characteristics of partial replacement of cement with 10%, 20%, 30% of Industrial Waste(phosphogysum). From this it was seen that when there is 20% replacement of cement with industrial waste, it gives a good test result then the other mix percentage. This type of concrete with industrial waste is very suitable for laying rigid pavement.

Building information modelling (BIM) is one of the revolutions in construction industry. BIM is one of the long-waiting solutions for construction industry in order to solve the arisen quality and effectiveness problems. Many researchers have proved the benefits gained from BIM. In this paper, the structural package available in BIM platform is summarized and its maturity is discussed. The BIM projects in Malaysia are listed and it showed a low local BIM implementation. In the perspectives of engineers, migrating from 2D drawing to building information model is discussed with the faced problems and challenges. The technical supports such as internet supports, cloud system and etc. was lacked for small-scaled companies; and self-transformation plan is not available which is believed to minimize the lost during transformation. From structural engineers' perspective, a better visualization with building information models is critical to address these major problems occurred throughout the migration. However, more time are expected to be consumed in producing the models as it was found that there is a low level of model sharing between engineers and architects. Although the BIM implementation in Malaysia is still in a low level, it is advised that industry players and government should work together to migrating from traditional method to BIM environment.

A pile foundation is commonly adopted in geotechnical engineering to support structures, and its application has been extended to cold-regions engineering. In past decades, a host of scholars investigated pile behaviors and proposed design guidelines for seasonally frozen ground or permafrost. This paper reviews the research with respect to pile performance and engineering practice in cold regions, organized as follows:(1) creep tests and bearing capacity,(2) frost-jacking hazards,(3) laterally loaded piles,(4) dynamic responses,(5) refreezing due to concrete-hydration heat, and(6) improved countermeasures and design methods. We first summarize previous research and recent progress; then, predict the development trend of pile foundations in cold regions and recommend further research.
