Wood chips are generated from wood industries, particularly from furniture manufacturing. The general reuse options are, however, currently limited to low-value applications. Driven by the adverse impacts of climate change, with the aim of achieving more environmental sustainability through reducing waste and increasing reuse/recycle options, this study investigated the feasibility of using wood chips as a pipe backfilling and embankment fill material. A laboratory assessment undertaken in this research shows that wood chips are suitable as a non-structural embankment fill material, but not as a pipe backfilling material. This research also presents the environmental benefits of using wood chips in natural landscaping and the effects of filter depth in such applications. It is found that wood chips significantly trap total suspended solids (TSS) and total nitrogen (TN), contributing to increased total phosphorus (TP) concentration. As such the use of such material in urban landscaping should be subjective depending on the level of concerns for specific pollutant(s) (TSS, TN and TP). With regard to the effect of filter media depth on pollutants' removal efficiencies, it is found that the pollutants' removal efficiencies linearly vary with filter media depth.

Fashionable eco-friendly lifestyle increases the interest in green roofs. The subject of this article is to present problems as well as the benefits of using green roofs. The purpose of this article is to describe the advantages of using green roofs. The advantages are both ecological and what's very important today - also economic and aesthetic. In order to be objective, we also need to talk about the drawbacks of this type of construction investment. This study may be helpful in answering the question of whether it is worth following the new trend and using green roofs. The article makes it easier to consider all pros and cons.

The construction industry is in search of cleaner and greener alternatives for materials in concrete. The main objective of this study was to determine the properties of concrete using recycled ceramic waste aggregates (CWA). In this study, natural fine and coarse aggregates were partially substituted as ceramic waste aggregate in the range of 25%, 50% and 75%. Fifty-four cubes and twenty-one cylinders were prepared and tested to obtain the physical and mechanical properties of concrete. The compressive strength of concrete specimens containing 50% recycled ceramic fine aggregates (CFA) and 75% recycled ceramic coarse aggregates (CCA) is greater than the conventional concrete. However, the modulus of elasticity decreased with increased recycled aggregate content. The aggregates replacement decreases the concrete density but satisfying the desired compressive strength of concrete. The results made it possible to adopt ceramic tile waste as recycled aggregate materials to promote sustainable development in the production of concrete.

Naturally, buildings will deteriorate during its life cycle. On the other hand, sustainability of building condition is the main objective of providing service for users. Therefore, building maintenance management should be a priority to achieve that objective. In Indonesia, there are many public buildings with different conditions and some of them are not in optimal conditions demanding urgent maintenance treatment. In addition, limited budget and absence of building maintenance decisionmaking tool are among factors causing unmanaged maintenance activities. Moreover, agencies must allocate maintenance budget and prioritize buildings maintenance manually. This paper proposes an optimization mathematical model which adopts Constraint Programming (CP) formulation to assist in selecting the most cost-effective strategy for particular building and determining budget allocation each year. CP is famous on its flexibility to problem declaration that makes scenario analysis conduct effectively. This CP-based model subjects to budget constraint and required condition level. In this case, budget, maintenance strategy options, building deterioration rate, time period, and minimum acceptable building condition are set. There are four maintenance strategy options available, Light Repair, Rehabilitation, Renovation, and Restoration which have different improvement impact for each strategy. Therefore, a case study is conducted to implement the model which involves 15 buildings in a 10-year time of period and two scenarios are presented in this proposed model. The result shows that the two scenarios allocate annual maintenance budget differently depending on diversities of planner management goals.

Currently, highway tunnel development is on the upswing. As an important guarantee for traffic safety in highway tunnel, tunnel lighting has a short history of research. Since the 1960s when tunnel lighting began to become a subject of research, it was gradually and profoundly realized that lighting at the tunnel threshold zone was the focus of the entire tunnel lighting. This paper provides a review on past research into tunnel lighting and findings, and then introduces the latest theory and calculation methods regarding the luminance in the threshold zone of highway tunnel with a view to giving some valuable reference for engineering practice.

This study introduces the series of activities and results that are contributing for the CDW recycling industry in Vietnam especially for the implementation of the recently introduced Circular No.08/2017/TT-BXD. The equation for estimation of the amount of CDW generated from building demolition was introduced. New management regulations which are guideline for demolition, sorting, transportation and treatment and new Vietnamese standard for specification of testing and acceptance for CDW recycling materials are highlighted. The properties of recycling concrete from a pilot project were tested. The research designed a circle of recycling business that results from research are contributing for the sustainable management and technologies in Vietnam. These activities and contributions will significantly support for the implementation of Government's new regulation, reducing the solid waste to meet the National strategies for environment as well as open for a new important recycling industry in Vietnam.

Equipment operators play an integral role in the safe and efficiency operation of heavy equipment. They observe the environment, understand the situation, and make decisions and actions accordingly. Compared with other types of equipment, operating a crane is more sophisticated and mentally demanding, and thus crane operators are more vulnerable to human errors. Therefore, special considerations to mitigate operator errors should be taken when designing an operatorassistance system for construction cranes. With the goal of improving the operators' situation awareness (SA) of safety risks, this research presents a technical framework and practical system architecture for an operator-assistance system by leveraging real-time motion sensing and 3D modeling of dynamic workspaces. An approach for evaluating operators' SA was proposed to validate the effectiveness of the assistance system in actual lifting operations. Results in a series of field tests indicated that the prototype system improved the operators' SA which resulted in an improved lift performance.

In the face of the unfolding climate crisis, the role and importance of reducing Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the building sector is increasing. This study investigates the global trends of GHG emissions occurring across the life cycle of buildings by systematically compiling life cycle assessment (LCA) studies and analysing more than 650 building cases. Based on the data extracted from these LCA studies, the influence of features related to LCA methodology and building design is analysed. Results show that embodied GHG emissions, which mainly arise from manufacturing and processing of building materials, are dominating life cycle emissions of new, advanced buildings. Analysis of GHG emissions at the time of occurrence, shows the upfront 'carbon spike' and emphasises the need to address and reduce the GHG 'investment' for new buildings. Comparing the results with existing life cycle-related benchmarks, we find only a small number of cases meeting the benchmark. Critically reflecting on the benchmark comparison, an in-depth analysis reveals different reasons for cases achieving the benchmark. While one would expect that different building design strategies and material choices lead to high or low embodied GHG emissions, the results mainly correlate with decisions related to LCA methodology, i.e. the scope of the assessments. The results emphasize the strong need for transparency in the reporting of LCA studies as well as need for consistency when applying environmental benchmarks. Furthermore, the paper opens up the discussion on the potential of utilizing big data and machine learning for analysis and prediction of environmental performance of buildings.
