In case of underground construction affected by groundwater, CIP（Cast-In-Place Pile）method is generally used to solve the geo-hydraulic problem. However, as this method has poor connectivity between piles, an auxiliary method for cut-off is required in many cases. In this study, a newly-developed cut-off wall（H-CIP） with no auxiliary method, by using surfactant grout（Hi-FA）,which improves anti-washout and infiltration ability, is introduced, and the field applicability of H-CIP method is evaluated. CIP and H-CIP piles were installed with same ground conditions, and field and laboratory tests were conducted to verify the performance,respectively. As results, newly-contrived H-CIP method shows higher field performance for cut-off and strength than conventional CIP method.

Project performance is often conceptualised as a few quantitative and disjointed parameters, like the classical time, cost and quality triangle, or the balanced scorecard's four fragmented dimensions. Rarely, is sociological theory mobilized to appreciate the complexity of a project's performance. However, a design-build project's performance can be conceptualized through the lens of institutional work and as a result, be understood as an emerging constellation of multiple institutions. To understand potential relationships between institutional processes and project performance, an ex-post study was conducted of two completed design-build projects. The ex-post study was based on interviews carried out with key participants from the two design-build projects. While each project developed multiple relationships between institutions over the course of the project, the projects were characterized by particular constellations of institutions which we denote 'settled domination' and 'conflict and competition'. Settled domination resulted in project performance that pre-dominantly satisfied the dominant institutions while project participants expected and more-or-less accepted that remaining institutions were compromised. Conflict and competition resulted in project performance characterized by a mix of compromised and uncompromised institutions. Overall, the two projects show that project performance is an emerging qualitative concept that gradually settles during the aftermath of the building phase.

A non-suction controlled method of wetting-drying cycles for unsaturated compacted loess material has been studied in this paper. The specimen was wetted by a sprayer and dried by air and the moisture content was controlled by measuring the specimen mass. Calculated moisture content was investigated and compared with measurement data. It can be indicated from the results that the method is effective, accurate and time-saving for controlling moisture content of compacted loess. © 2017 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) grids has been established as a simple and innovative method for flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. In this strengthening technique, the CFRP grids are encased with the polymer mortar. As CFRP is known to be susceptible to deterioration at elevated temperature, the fire performance of RC members strengthened with CFRP grids has been an issue of significant concern, particularly for building applications. In order to evaluate the feasibility of achieving a fire-rated CFRP grids strengthening system, an experimental program was conducted to examine and document the performance of RC beams strengthened with CFRP grids under fire conditions. Test results on fire indicated that the CFRP grids strengthening system provided good fire resistance performance, moreover, the CFRP grids strengthened RC beams can achieve structural fire resistance ratings as specified in building design codes. © 2017 APFIS. Use of solar cells (PV) and solar collectors are key remedies in buildings where a large part of the energy supply should be based on renewable energy. The aim of this work has been to evaluate calculated and measured solar production of two identical BIPV roofs located at the ZEB Living Laboratory situated at NTNU-campus in Trondheim. Temperature, irradiance and wind speed and direction at the rooftop of the building have been monitored since the construction of the house. There was found a large difference in energy production of the northern roof section and the southern. One possible explanation is shading of the northern roof because of low solar azimuth during the measuring period. In order to avoid such disadvantages, design of the PV-roofs should be considered early in the design phase of the building project. A small difference was found between the hourly measured and the calculated values of the PV performance based on the monitored local climate data. Use of generic climate data expect to cause a larger difference between measured and simulated energy performance due to lack of consideration to local conditions.

Resilience management stretches across the decoupled domains of community, corporate, and public governance. As a result, fostering resilience needs a governance structure that supports collective actions and integrates fragmented fields with different institutional frameworks. In this study, we carry out a review of three different perspectives on resilience -engineering, social, and organizational- in order to explore resilience management in the context of governance of infrastructure systems. We discuss the common practices to address resilience of engineering systems, the need and current trend for integration of institutions into these practices through formal (e.g., policies and regulations) as well as informal mechanisms (e.g., trust, norms, and shared cognitive structures). To illustrate our theorizing, we provide three illustrative case studies. The cases highlight the barriers and enablers across the three perspectives and highlight the inter-organizational context of management of resilience. We uncovered organizational dynamics such as the necessity of establishing critical functionality through organizational capacity for stakeholder engagement, the need for diverse organizations to address institutional complexity in management of resilience, and the importance of decoupling in aligning the outcomes of resilience management practices with policies. The construction industry is one of the largest and most diverse of the sectors with continuous development. The momentum and impact of the industry’s development is highly influenced by a complex system of different elements including innovation. However, the sector is relatively weak at all stages of the innovation process and the strength of collaboration among government, industry and academia is insufficient. It is generally accepted that construction companies invest less in new knowledge and process development as well as engage significantly less in innovation related activities than firms in other sectors. Hence, it is very important to control and manage the significant factors that affect success in innovation taking into account the complexity and the inherent dynamics of the construction innovation diffusion. By doing so, this study addresses the decision making process within the complex innovation process in the construction industry by employing a step-by-step modelling process consisting of a multi-stages analysis, stakeholder-based and modelling approaches. construction is closely connected to the national social structure and is highly influenced by various institutional actors and interactions among components and, consequently, can be presented as a sectoral system. Hence, the overarching objective of the paper is to introduce a systems approach aiming to conceptualise and formulate an initial simulation model of a complex construction innovation system representing correct and continuous interactions between government, the construction industry and academia. Moreover, the research underpins future development of scenario-generating modelling in order to reveal potential pathways to rational decision-making along with potential policy recommendations and various innovation planning strategies that improve construction innovation performance in the Russian Federation. The Miner's rule that is used as the damage evaluation method for the random waveform requires time-consuming waveform decomposition. It is effective to estimate the damage index from only maximum amplitude and energy absorption without waveform decomposition. It is known that the relationship between maximum deformation and cumulative plastic deformation is correlated with the repetition number f value that characterizes the seismic ground motion. In this paper, the simplified damage evaluation method using the average amplitude associated with the maximum amplitude based on f value is poposed.

Indoor Air Quality in Kindergartens in Poland

The universal ventilation system in Polish kindergartens is the natural ventilation system. This is due to the fact that these buildings are several or even several dozen years old. National regulation for natural ventilation define only general guidelines. There are in the legislation acts only the permissible tightness of the building joinery and the minimum value of the air infiltrate to the rooms. The amount of air is constant regardless of the room's purpose or the number of people staying in them. Over the last decade, in such buildings incomplete thermomodernization treatments were carried out, as a result of which the inflow of air to the rooms was most often limited, and thus the indoor air quality decreased. While, the low indoor air quality may lead not only to the poor well-being of users, but also to low efficiency of work and insufficient learning of new messages. This problem is extremely important in the case of a group of people who are not be able to determine the requirements in relation to IAQ. As has been shown in the Scandinavian countries, in the rooms where children are staying there the proper ventilation system several times reduces the chance of allergic symptoms. At the same time, research carried out in Denmark showed that the low indoor air quality in school premises negatively affects the learning efficiency of children. That is why it is extremely important to ensure proper microclimate conditions in the rooms where the youngest children are staying. The article presents the results of research on the indoor air quality (IAQ) in 4 kindergartens in Poland, located in the city with 200,000 inhabitants. The buildings in which research was carried out were built in the years 1970-1993 and were equipped with a gravity ventilation system. The analysis covered the variability of the basic parameters describing the indoor air quality, i.e. temperature, relative humidity and concentration of carbon dioxide.
