In recent years the palm oil has been criticized because of its impacts on the environment and human health. Therefore, this study focused on the investigation of human health and ecosystem quality impacts that arose from the plantation of fresh fruit bunch of palm oil by employing an open-source software, namely OpenLCA version 1.5. The life cycle assessment approach was used for the analysis of the investigated impacts. The effects of land use changes on the human health and ecosystem quality were assessed. By employing ReCiPe Endpoint methodology in life cycle impact assessment phase the total ecosystems impact 0.00017 species per year while total human health damage was 0.00146 DALY The results showed that the land use change has an impact on all the impacts categories except the freshwater eutrophication, freshwater ecotoxicity, ozone depletion, terrestrial ecotoxicity, and terrestrial acidification. In addition, the analysis showed that the application of the fertilizers and pesticides were the main contributor in all the impact categories. The results show that transportation is not the major contributor in any one of the impact categories

Enhancing service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures located in marine environments is an issue of great interest for design engineers. The present research addresses the effect of surface coatings on service life of onshore RC structures. Long-term performance of concrete samples up to 88 months of exposure at natural marine environment was investigated. Two onshore exposure conditions, including soil and atmosphere and different types of concrete coatings were studied. Carbonation rates of up to 0.5 and 1.5 mm/year were observed at the first 88 months of exposure for soil and atmospheric samples, respectively. Surface chloride ion build-up and variation in chloride ion diffusion were monitored with respect to time, and service life was estimated. Based on the obtained results it is proposed to use the aliphatic acrylic and polyurethane coatings for enhancing the service life of concrete structures in the investigated exposure conditions.

Apparent cohesion is the most widely used strength parameter of unsaturated soils that reflect the influence of matric suction, but it is not easy to obtain. A rather complicated strength test is needed. Hence, this study investigates the feasibility of adopting test results of the unconfined com- pression strength to assess the apparent cohesion of unsaturated lateritic soil. A series of laboratory tests were conducted, including unconfined compression strength and a triaxial test of unsaturated compacted lateritic soil. In specific, the unconfined compression test was combined with filter paper test to obtain the unconfined compression strength and matric suction of the samples. Soil samples were first compacted at a designated water content and then subjected to drying and wetting using an apparatus developed by the authors. As a result, the correlations among the matric suction, the unconfined compression strength and the apparent cohesion can be studied. Based on the extended Mohr-Coulomb criterion, a simple analysis method is established, which uses the apparent cohesion of unconfined compression Cuc to evaluate the unsaturated triaxial apparent cohesion C value. Test results show that the relationship between C and Cuc value is an approximate linearly increase, the proportion function α value is about 0.65 to 1.04. Therefore, the apparent cohesion can be reasonably assessed using the apparent cohesion derived from the unconfined compressive test with proper modification. The method presented in this paper exhibits high practical potential.

Transportation system plays a vital role in sustaining the economic and social well-being of a community. Disaster or extreme hazard such as earthquake, storms, landslide, flood, terrorism, etc. has a major impact on the resilience of the road, especially in ensuring the impact toward the recovery for communities. Road infrastructure is linked to many encompassing factors such as road user, climate, economy, material, topography and periodic maintenance. Recently, unpredicted climate causes heavy rain, landslide, and flood resulting in high losses bared by the government on the repair and reconstruction works. Previous events have revealed that certain road areas in Malaysia are vulnerable after exposed to damage due to the natural disaster. This paper highlights the identified factors that contribute to adaptation on the escape route for road disaster resilient. A comprehensive review was done to identify a few missing approaches in the road network resiliency, which include a temporal route option as part of the adaptive routing solution. The research is expected to become a reference to overcome disruption in the road network in time of disaster or crisis while supporting the government initiative to strengthen the resilience of the nation's infrastructure.

As a new mode of public transport service, variable-route bus service can further improve the service quality of urban public transit system, and will become an important part of integrated urban comprehensive public transit system. Therefore, this paper studies the operation scheduling model of variable-route bus, aiming at improving the service level of public transport and reducing the operating cost. Based on the theoretical research, the service area maximum width of variable-route bus is obtained according to the relationship between the system slack time and the travel time. Then a two-stage vehicle scheduling model which comprehensively considers the reservation demand and the dynamic real-time demand is proposed. The operation mode conversion model of variable-route bus and the conventional bus are further established, which provides powerful guarantee for the application of variable-route bus service. Finally, by designing simulation experiment, the comparison of relevant operation service parameters between variable-route bus and conventional bus is conducted. This paper aims to study the influence of variable-route bus to operation and scheduling, and provides a theoretical basis for the promotion and application of variable-route bus in China.
