Reinforced concrete beams can be effectively strengthened by FRP plates or attaching steel plates on the soffit. The performance of this type of composite beam is controlled by the interaction at the steel-concrete interface. In this study, a total of three full-scale reinforced concrete beams, strengthened with steel plates in use of different types of strengthening methods, were tested, including one reinforced concrete beam without strengthening. In this program, a new simplified anchoring system (direct shear bolting-plate system) has been proposed for strengthening a reinforced concrete beam. Its behavior was compared to the available test results from the commonly used strengthening methods. The experimental results shows that this modified anchoring system is capable of effectively reducing the debonding failure between concrete and steel plates and controlling crack development after steel yielding. It was also found that the direct shear anchoring system is more effective in increasing the flexural strength of a reinforced concrete beam and reducing the longitudinal slipping between structural components, which was eventually for increasing the capability between concrete beams and steel plates to work together.

Classical continuum models are unable to describe the size effect in nano/micro structures, even though this effect is observed experimentally. Therefore, modified continuum models are frequently applied for the investigation of nanomechanics due to their computational efficiency and capability of providing accurate results which are comparable to the atomistic models. In this paper, the Mindlin plate is extended to the piezoelectric nanoplate with nonlocal and gradient theories for size effect. The governing equations for bending moments, normal and shear stresses are derived via the Hamilton‘s principle. Differences between the two theories are described.

Rapid development of construction industry increases construction waste on landfill leading to shorter life span of the landfill. Waste reduction through Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) practice has been encouraged in construction industry towards sustainable waste management since couple of decades ago. However, waste reduction through 3R is still at its infancy in construction industry in Penang, Malaysia. The aim of this paper is to determinate the constraints to construction waste reduction through 3R among contractors in Penang. The findings reported herein is based on feedbacks from 143 construction contractors of grade CIDB G7, G6 and G5 based in Penang, experts from Penang Local Authority, CIDB in Penang and its headquarters, National Solid Waste Management Department, and headquarters of Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp). Based on interviews and questionnaire surveys, constraints identified are Time and cost, Contractor's attitude and low participation, Lack of enforcement law and regulation, Lack of awareness and knowledge, Lack of coordination, and Lack of space. Awareness and knowledge, and enforcement law and regulation are the major barriers which influence others constraints as well. Therefore, these constraints should be emphasized by the authorities in order to improve the implementation of 3R construction waste reduction.
