This paper describes the research carried out to investigate the safety of transversely prestressed concrete bridge decks. Laboratory tests were performed on a 1:2 scale model of a bridge consisting of a thin, lransversely prestressed concrete deck slab cast in-situ between the flanges of long prestressed concrete girders. TNO DIANA 9.4.4 tnite element software was used to analyze the scale model nonlinearly. The theoretical analysis, considering the beneficial effects of compressive membrane action (CMA), showed an adequate safety margin against the Eurocode Load Model 1 design wheel load (CEN 2003) leading to the conclusion chat the existing transversely prestressed concrete bridge decks still have sufficient residual bearing (punching shear) capacity.

The construction industry measures worker safety performance through lagging indicators such as counting numbers of illnesses, injuries, and fatalities. Active leading indicators, such as capturing hazardous proximity situations between ground workers and heavy construction equipment, provide an additional metric for construction site personnel safety performance without incurring worker accidents. This article presents an algorithm for recording, identifying, and analyzing interactive hazardous proximity situations between ground workers and heavy construction equipment. Spatialtemporal GPS data of ground worker and heavy equipment movements are analyzed to automatically measure the frequency and duration of identified hazardous proximity situations. Individual periodic ground worker and equipment operator safety performance with regards to exposure to hazardous proximity situations is reported in detail. The results are integrated with previous research on blind spots and other safety deficiencies of the equipment. By measuring and analyzing leading indicator data of ground workers and heavy equipment, safety managers can identify hazardous situations that may otherwise lead to incidents. Knowledge generated about hazardous proximity issues are disseminated to construction personnel through enhanced safety training and education. Mitigation measures can also be taken for safer construction equipment operation.

Building performance Simulation (BPS) has been widely used for evaluating performance of buildings. However, when it is applied to a real-life situation, its usage is quite limited. The one of major barriers is uncertainty caused by occupants who hold strong stochastic nature and have the corresponding effect on building systems. This study delivers random nature of occupancy patterns in buildings. Firstly, the presence of the occupants is investigated rather than focusing on occupant behaviour. The occupancy patterns (presence and absence) in two laboratories and three library rooms were monitored and a random walk assumption was tested using the gathered occupancy information. The degree of randomness was verified using Normalized Cumulative Periodogram (NCP). It is shown that there is a strong random walk evidence for the occupancy pattern in real-life situation. The result explains the difficulties in generalization of occupant models.
