Propagation of pendulum-type wave in two-dimensional block-rock mass with accurate consideration of rotation effect

Rock mass is a typical inhomogeneous structure composed of hierarchically embedded rock blocks of different scales and separated by weaker interlayers. Due to weak mechanical properties of interlayers, the deformation of rock mass both in statics and dynamics is mainly concentrated in interlayers. Therefore, rock blocks as rigid bodies will experience translational and rotational motions, and the pendulum-type wave arises in rock mass. One-dimensional pendulum-type wave has been studied by many scholars, but two-dimensional pendulum-type wave has not been studied completely, especially the rotational motion of rock blocks should be considered. Therefore, the two-dimensional dynamic model of block-rock mass consisting of rectangular blocks separated by weaker interlayers is established based on accurate consideration of rotation effect. The applicability and reliability of this dynamic model are proved by comparing with experimental data. The propagation law and characteristics of pendulum-type wave in two-dimensional block-rock mass are investigated. Furthermore, the effect of these factors such as the viscous damping, geomechanical invariant and block size on the propagation of pendulum-type wave are determined. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Reliability design of braced excavation is still a challenge for geotechnical *** design is a normal method to control the safety and cost of braced *** study presents an advanced reliability-based robust geotechnical design method,which can consider multiple failures and uncertainty of statistical information.A universal design sample was conducted to verify the necessity of considering the uncertainty of statistical *** limit state and serviceability limit state of braced excavations were defined,and point estimating method was used to evaluate the standard deviation of failure ***-objective and three-objective optimization models were developed to illustrate the application of proposed methods in *** addition,the performance of optimization algorithms and further application of multiple-objective models were *** results from this study indicate that the proposed method has a good performance in determining the optimal design with reasonable robustness and *** algorithms have higher efficiency in solving nonlinear and multiple-objective optimization problems than the 2nd Non-dominated sorting genetic *** study can guide the design of retaining systems of braced excavations in clay.

This study describes a field experiment conducted in the south of Lebanon, the Jabal Amel Municipal Union. The impact of electromagnetic waves (EMW) was investigate, notably those generated by the LTE (Long-Term Evolution) mobile system, on honeybee health and navigation ability. This study explores the relationship of EMW with magnetite nanoparticles present in bees, which have a significant part in their navigation. Applying super-paramagnetic simulations and complex mathematical platforms, the resonance frequency of these nanoparticles was calculated, and it was discovered that smaller particles produced larger frequencies. The results were confirmed using obtained data from experiments within the Halictus bees’ normal range observed (20–40 nm). The study examines the EMW radiated by a long-term evolution system, which penetrates severely into these nanoparticles, resulting in energy absorption and consequent heat generation - a phenomena described by the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). Experimental evidence validated the hypothesis that these nanoparticles had considerable SAR, particularly in the microwave section of the EM spectrum. The SAR associated with these nanoparticles, as well as the consequences for bees, underscore the need of finding solutions to limit the effects of EM radiation on these critical pollinators. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Automation of construction processes facilitates increased productivity and overall higher project performance. This paper presents a methodology for comparative assessment of different construction processes and selection of an optimal solution based on appropriate automation implementation. construction processes are quantitatively evaluated using a methodology combining case-based reasoning and compositional modeling. Through the generation of many combinations of process fragments that are compiled from case libraries, potential solutions are explored and evaluated. An example involving solutions such as RCC frame construction, precast construction, and modular steel frame construction is described in this paper. The study demonstrates the possibility of selection of suitable construction processes based on the quantitative assessment of a large number of potential solutions. Processes are modelled by decomposing them up to the elementary tasks and appropriate level of automation is identified in all the tasks. © 2022 International Association on Automation and Robotics in construction.

During the rapid economic growth of Japan in the 1960s, the country's infrastructure development progressed swiftly. Since 2014, the Japanese government has mandated regular inspections of major urban infrastructure. This policy has resulted in the annual accumulation of substantial amounts of infrastructure inspection data. Two years prior to implementing this policy, the Japanese government also launched an open data initiative to encourage industry developers to utilize open data. However, this study observes that inconsistencies in data formatting and standards across different regions pose significant challenges to the utilization of this data. To address the obstacles hindering the use of open data, this study proposes an integrated system(Service Link Platform) for effectively managing and utilizing periodic transportation infrastructure inspection data which encompasses data collection, data format processing, cloud storage and transmission, and data utilization. This article will layout the manner in which the system employs a method for distributing data in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) format to publicly manage bridge inspection data and ensure compatibility of data formats. © 2024 IEEE.

In recently architectural research, there is a well-documented emphasis on energy-saving design optimization. However, there is a conspicuous deficiency in studies that address multi-objective optimization related to the long-term carbon emissions associated with building lifecycles. In this study, modular buildings in construction sites are taken as the research object, and box-type rooms are taken as the prototypical model. A set of multi-objective optimization methods for architectural design is established by series modeling tools, building performance simulation tools and NSGA-II non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm tools, combined with Python programming tools. This method is to optimize the reduction of carbon emissions, energy consumption and costs throughout the life cycle. The purpose of this investigation is to establish a methodology for assessing and optimizing architectural designs with a primary focus on carbon emissions during the design phase. The goal is to provide architects with practical insights to enhance their designs while simultaneously achieving intelligent, ecofriendly buildings. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. Influence of ground-motion duration on seismic performance of shallow-founded buildings in liquefiable soils: An effective stress analysis approach

In earthquake-resistant design, amplitude and frequency content of ground motions (GMs) have been considered using spectral matching techniques;however, duration effects remain insufficiently explored in designing buildings in liquefiable soils. This study investigates the influence of ground-motion duration on seismic response of shallow-founded buildings under strong earthquakes. Buildings in liquefiable soils are analyzed using nonlinear dynamic analysis with coupled u-p formulations. The numerical code and calibrated constitutive parameters of Toyoura sand are validated through dynamic centrifuge testing. Two ground-motion suites, including 30 pairs of long and short-duration events, are scaled to the target PGA of 0.3 g, and then selected to be spectrally equivalent to isolate duration measures from the others. Comparative results show that longer duration events result in greater settlements and tilt compared to shorter events. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of considering duration measures in assessing seismic responses of buildings. Furthermore, correlation between settlements and peak transient tilt, and intensity measures (IMs) of GMs are comprehensively analyzed. It is found that employing compound IMs can lead to notable improvements in predictive accuracy for settlement and peak transient tilt compared to single common IMs. The compound IMs, namely CAV2/3 × Ds5-951/3 and SMV × Ds5-951/3, are newly proposed for use in order to achieve best correlation with the shear-induced settlements and peak transient tilt, respectively. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Cold milling is a widely used method for rehabilitating asphalt pavement,generating reclaimed asphalt pavement(RAP)*** this process,aggregates within the asphalt pavement will be crushed,forming RAP agglomerates and aggregate ***,the mechanism of these phenomena has remained unclear,and a unified evaluation method has yet to be *** this study,RAP agglomeration and aggregate fragmentation were characterized,five distinct methods were systematically assessed,and the mechanism of RAP agglomeration and breakdown was analyzed by discrete element method(DEM)simulation based on setting different particle contact parameters,then followed by a mechanical analysis,and demonstrated in *** results revealed that both agglomeration and aggregate breakdown occur within RAP particles of various sizes,with the five methods showing similar trends in quantifying these *** DEM simulations and mechanical analyses,the aggregate breakdown predominantly occurs at the cutter's motion trajectory of the cutter and during crack propagation,while agglomeration was mainly related to the sliding surface's *** milling speed and depth positively impact RAP agglomeration,while negatively affecting aggregate breakdown,and milling drum speed exerts minimal influence on these *** agglomeration varies considerably in different engineering projects,and cold milling parameters should be determined based on the material composition of the asphalt pavement and design requirements to control agglomeration and breakdown rates of RAP.

construction engineering and management (CEM) domain covers multiple evolving sub-disciplines and directions. To understand those directions, numerous research efforts have conducted scientometric analysis of publications to explore their significance and impact. Despite their valuable insights, such research endeavors have been limited to exploratory analyses, whereas no previous attempt has been conducted to predict the future impact of research in CEM. This study fills this knowledge gap by performing a predictive analysis of citation metrics of publications in CEM using machine learning (ML). The developed model was trained on a dataset of 93,868 publications using an XGBoost algorithm. Testing showed that the model could predict high-impact research after 5 years from publication with an accuracy of 80.71%. Further analysis of the predicted model results identified "project planning and design," "organizational issues," and "information technologies, robotics, and automation" as the top forecasted CEM research subdisciplines that are anticipated to attract high citation counts. Ultimately, this research contributes to the CEM body of knowledge with a framework that can predict future citation trends, which can help guide researchers and stakeholders in academia identify research and funding opportunities. © 2024 Computing in civil engineering 2023: Visualization, Information Modeling, and Simulation - Selected Papers from the ASCE International Conference on Computing in civil engineering 2023. Cable stays are widely used in power distribution and telecommunication sectors to support utility poles. A cable stay consists of a steel cable and rod system that ties the pole to the ground to provide lateral stability. The cable is normally tied to the pole using a number of different details and the other end it is tied to a rod which is embedded into the ground. As a steel structure where a part is buried under the ground, corrosion is inevitable. Corrosion degrades the structural capacity of cable stays over time by reducing the effective cross-sectional area in carrying the load. Failure of cable stays can lead to utility pole failures which can pose significant economic impacts and safety concerns. Therefore, reliable and accurate condition assessment of cable stays is crucial for safe and reliable performance of power distibution and telecommnication networks. This paper investigates the ground level and below ground corrosion of cable stays. 25 in-service cable stays in Victoria, Australia are uprooted to conduct corrosion assessment and the results of corrosion assessment are presented in this paper. Conclusions are drawn based on the results to improve the condition assessment techniques and to facilitate the asset management team in planning the replacement and strengthening schedule for cable stays.
