Machine learning solution for regional landslide susceptibility based on fault zone division strategy

Landslide susceptibility assessment is an essential tool for disaster prevention and management. In areas with multiple fault zones, the impact of fault zone on slope stability cannot be disregarded. This study performed qualitative analysis of fault zones and proposed a zoning method to assess the landslide susceptibility in Chengkou County, Chongqing Municipality, China. The region within a distance of 1 km from the faults was designated as sub-zone A, while the remaining area was labeled as sub-zone B. To accomplish the assessment, a dataset comprising 388 historical landslides and 388 non-landslide points was used to train the random forest model. 10-fold cross-validation was utilized to select the training and testing datasets for the model. The results of the models were analyzed and discussed, with a focus on model performance and prediction uncertainty. By implementing the proposed division strategy based on fault zone, the accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, and AUC of both two sub-zones surpassed those of the whole region. In comparison to the results obtained for the whole region, sub-zone B exhibited an increase in AUC by 6.15%, while sub-zone A demonstrated a corresponding increase of 1.66%. Moreover, the results of 100 random realizations indicated that the division strategy has little effect on the prediction uncertainty. This study introduces a novel approach to enhance the prediction accuracy of the landslide susceptibility mapping model in areas with multiple fault zones.

Tropical storms pose a great threat to the traffic safety of tunnel-embankment transition sections in coastal areas, especially when two trains are meeting. A series of 3D computational fluid dynamics numerical simulations of wind-rain-tunnel-embankment-train are established using the Eulerian multiphase and the Shear-Stress Transport k-ω models. The numerical model's reliability is verified by wind tunnel tests using rainfall simulation technology. The differences in the train's aerodynamic performance before and during the meeting under different wind-rain conditions are analyzed. The rain phase's impact mechanism on the flow field is revealed. Results show that: Before the meeting, the rain phase will worsen the train's aerodynamic performance. When the wind speed and rainfall intensity is 20 m/s and 400 mm/h, the head train's average lift force (C‾y), yawing and pitching moments (C‾mz) increase by 6.25%, 9.68% and 10.31%, respectively. The rain phase increases the wind-rain load amplitude during the meeting, and the head train's pitching moment increases by 10.7%. The moment is more worthy of attention than that of force under a rainy day, and the change rate of C‾mz is 4.9 times of that of C‾y. The amplification effect of rain on wind-rain loads may endanger the driving safety of trains at the tunnel entrance. © 2023

To explore the construction risk of subway stations under rainstorm disasters. This paper aims to develop a risk causation analysis and risk probability model that integrates fault tree analysis (FTA) and Bayesian network (BN) to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fault tree approaches. Firstly, an accident tree model was created by compiling 49 secondary disaster-derived events of rainy disasters into 4 categories: human, machine, management, and environment (HMME). Secondly, BN is used for forward reasoning, diagnosis, and excavation of subway station construction risk factors under rainstorm disasters. On this basis, BN is used for reverse reasoning and evaluation of system risks to find out the most sensitive factors in all aspects. Finally, based on the quantitative results, pertinent policies are proposed. Pertinent policies and methods for reduction and prevention are suggested based on the quantifiable results. This method identifies the risk-causing factors that result in construction risks in subway stations and serves as a guide for assessing risks in projects involving subway station construction. © ASCE.

In recent years, traditional urban and rural planning analysis models have been continuously improved to deal with complex problems. Since the traditional model still has defects, the design and application of urban and rural planning analysis model based on K-Means algorithm are proposed. The K-Means algorithm is used to analyze urban and rural planning, and the basic workflow of the model is obtained, and the model is established and verified by application. The application in Keshan Town, Keshan County, Heilongjiang Province shows that the analysis results of the K-Means model are consistent with the actual situation and are better than other models. © 2023 IEEE.

Inadequate waste management in building projects highlights the need for a thorough assessment of present procedures and the implementation of sustainable measures, especially in urban areas like Johannesburg. To address the issues raised by construction and demolition (C&D) waste, sustainable waste management techniques such as waste segregation, recycling, and appropriate disposal techniques are essential. It is essential to adopt sustainable practices like the 3R principle (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse) and put waste pre-diction tools, site waste management plans, and regulatory frameworks in place to control waste management practices. The study used a quantitative approach to its investigation among South African construction professionals. The respondents’ responses were analysed using the Mean Item Score (MIS) and Kruskal Wallis. The results show that using environmentally friendly and sustainable building materials and implementing mobile recycling units on construction sites is a critical sustainable measure to enhance construction and demolition waste management in construction projects. Based on the study’s findings, it is recommended that there is a need to improve construction and demolition waste management, encourage eco-friendly material adoption, foster community engagement through workshops, and recognise informal waste workers’ contributions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

In many countries, recent boosts in the construction and renovation sectors and energy efficiency directives are driving a growing interest in the built environment among designers and maintainers. In this context, customized software solutions tailored for Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Building Energy Modelling (BEM) are proving to be indispensable for optimizing operational efficiency within the Architecture, engineering, construction, Owner, and Operator (AECOO) sector and for facilitating the generation of buildings' Digital Twins (DTs). These DTs rely on accurate geometry and ancillary information (semantics, sensors, etc.) to define properties of single elements, enabling crucial simulations in structural conditions or energy needs. However, BIM and BEM model creation and their enrichment with semantic information are highly time-consuming and prone to manual errors. Hence, there is an increasing demand for automatic methods featuring a high level of geometric accuracy to reconstruct building elements, such as walls, floors, and openings captured via 3D reality-based surveying. This paper introduces an automated method for creating Boundary Representation (B-Rep) models from 3D surveying data for the generation of digital building replicas. The method is based on the detection and computation of topological elements from 3D reality-based point clouds. It proves valuable for architectural or design workflows and for conducting energy or quality system simulations. © Author(s) 2024.

In order to meet the urgent needs of efficient urban planning and livable cities in modern society, the rational planning and design of urban building space layout is discussed based on laser point cloud algorithm. Reasonable planning and design of urban building spatial layout based on laser point cloud algorithm is a technology that uses laser scanner to obtain point cloud data of buildings, and then realizes reasonable planning and design of urban building spatial layout through processing and analysis. After filtering, registration and segmentation, the point cloud data obtained by laser scanner can obtain accurate geometric information of buildings. By analyzing this information, we can evaluate and optimize the location, shape and layout of urban buildings, so as to improve the quality and functionality of urban space. This technology provides important tools and data support for urban planners and architects, and helps to realize more reasonable and sustainable urban construction. © 2023 IEEE.

To effectively control the cost of urban renewal projects during the construction phase and improve the project construction benefits, a system dynamics-based cost control model for urban renewal projects is proposed. Firstly, we analyze the important and difficult points of cost control in the construction phase of urban renewal projects and identify the key factors of cost control;secondly, we establish a system dynamics model based on determining the key factors and their interrelationships;then we simulate the model by using actual cases. The simulation results show that the system dynamics model has clear cause-effect relationships, appropriate complexity, and accurate description characteristics, and can be effectively used for modeling and optimization of cost control in urban renewal projects. © 11th International Symposium on Project Management, ISPM 2023.
