Starting from a critical assessment of common indoor-environmental quality (IEQ) standards, this paper explores strategies that could improve their effectiveness and consistency. Thereby, it is assumed that IEQ standards should ideally display five key attributes, namely sound scientific basis, practical relevance for the stakeholders, compliance guidance provision, general usability, and developmental transparency. The study of common IEQ standards reveals a considerable level of diversity in terms of structure, character, and content. This highlights the need for a more harmonized approach to and a well-formed structural blueprint for the formulation of more effective and usable IEQ standards. The paper entails reflections on some of the necessary conditions for the development of such a blueprint. © Healthy Buildings Europe 2023. All rights reserved.

The insufficient availability of evidence-based guidance in practical treatment of multi-domain exposure situations in indoor environments has motivated multiple efforts to conceive and conduct studies on the combined effects of multiple factors on occupants' perception and evaluation of indoor-environmental quality. However, the research strategies that are being currently considered and in part implemented for this purpose may be subject to certain simplifications and misconceptions that would limit their ultimate conclusiveness and utility. The present discussion intends to highlight a number of such issues and encourage thus efforts toward a more robust framework for conducting research and developing standards regarding multi-domain exposure patterns in indoor environments and their implications for occupants' health and comfort. © Healthy Buildings Europe 2023. In order to study the effects of asphalt regenerators on the fatigue properties of mixed asphalt, linear amplitude scanning (LAS) test was designed and four types of regenerators (non-petroleum regenerators NRA and NRB, petroleum regenerators PR and bio-oil based regenerators BR) were mixed. The VECD theory analysis method was used to evaluate the miscible asphalt with different regeneration agents, different new asphalt and different old asphalt. The results showed that: In the process of asphalt regeneration, the peak value of the stress-strain curve will move to the lower right corner. The fatigue factor in the fatigue damage curve decreases slowly with the increase of the internal damage coefficient as the degree of asphalt aging increases. The stress sensitivity of SBS modified asphalt is lower than that of matrix asphalt, and the strain range of LAS test involving modified asphalt needs to be expanded. It can be seen that NRA is the best, BR is the second, NRA and PR are poor. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Prefabricated bridge deck panel installation is the main construction process for the upper structure of bridge engineering and also a major source of danger. A scientific and accurate analysis of the safety risks in the construction of prefabricated bridge deck panel installation is of great significance to reducing construction safety accidents. Firstly, a construction safety risk index system was constructed from the dimension of risk sources, and then the structural entropy weight method was used to rank the importance. Finally, the Longlingshan Overpass Project in Wuhan City, China, was selected as a case study. The case study showed that the machinery is the most important primary index, and the maintenance and quality of the hoisting steel wire rope were the most important secondary index. Targeted countermeasures and suggestions were also proposed in this article. © ASCE.

With an increasing demand for passenger and freight travel, airport construction program spending has heightened throughout the years. This poses a greater threat for sponsors to withstand the required financial capacities especially within the current economic conditions. None of the previous research attempted to provide a comprehensive overview on Airport Improvement Program (AIP) project expenditures. This paper fills this knowledge gaps using a graph theory approach. To this end, the authors used an interdependent research methodology that comprised of: (1) identifying AIP project keywords to represent the work actions performed;(2) vectorizing the data into a reference matrix that is split based on fund level;(3) developing the adjacency matrices from each reference matrix;(4) constructing the graph networks;and (5) visualizing the full data as well as interpreting for similarities and differences between the different fund levels. There were sustained similarities as well as differences between the fund levels. Results also indicated that the rehabilitation in the main aircraft entry, exit, maneuvering, and stationing areas are the main focus and center of all fund levels. Ultimately, this research synthesizes a foundation for comprehensive understanding of AIP projects by studying the interconnections as well as work actions performed in each fund level. This shall aid stakeholders in improved fund allocation decision-making procedures and management of human resources. © 2022 ASCE.

In this study, cores were sampled from several locations in the arches of the lining concrete of a road tunnel that was no longer in use to confirm the state of cracking damage at the casting end and to confirm the decline in concrete quality at the casting end by focusing on the distribution of the coarse aggregate. In this project, we conducted a series of fundamental experiments to investigate the feasibility of using volcanic glass powder, a pozzolanic material, as a concrete admixture to increase the resistance to material separation during casting and to moisture and salt penetration after curing, thereby realizing high-quality, highly durable lining concrete. The lining concrete using volcanic glass powder has been put to practical use through experiments from basic testing to construction. © 2024 The Author(s).

Pipeline infrastructure is crucial to help economic growth across the country. Pipelines are used to gather, transport, and distribute water, oil, or gas to end-use consumers. More than half of the pipelines in the US have been in service for more than 60 years. Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) structural liner is a trenchless rehabilitation method to repair aged underground pipelines. Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) is a popular liner material used to rehabilitate and improve the service of pipelines. To investigate the effect of CFRP liner on pipeline maintenance and rehabilitation, we simulate the mechanical properties of CFRP liner for damaged pipeline rehabilitation through three-dimensional finite element analysis. A parametric study is conducted to demonstrate the effect of liner thickness and in-pipe pressure on the performance of the CFRP liner rehabilitation. The computational modeling results exhibit the relationship between liner thickness and rehabilitation effect, and the stress concentration location at the damaged area. The results of the paper can be applied for the optimal design of CIPP liner and enhanced sustainability and resilience of the US pipeline systems. © 2023 by the American Society of civil Engineers. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) is a burgeoning concept. It is gaining prominence as an approach to better understand how artificial intelligence solutions' outputs can improve decision making. Evaluation frameworks to enable organizations to understand XAIs what, why, how, and when are yet to be developed. Thus, we aim to fill this void by developing a conceptual content, context, process, and outcome (CCPO) evaluation framework to justify XAIs adoption and effective management using construction organizations as a backdrop for the article's setting. After introducing and describing the proposed novel CCPO framework for operationalizing XAI, we discuss its implications for future research. The contributions of our article are twofold: First, it highlights the need for organizations to embrace and enact XAI so that decision makers and stakeholders can better understand why and how a specific prediction materializes;and second, it provides a frame of reference for organizations to realize the business value and benefits of XAI. © 1973-2011 IEEE.

Bridge deformation monitoring usually adopts contact sensors,and the implementation process is often limited by the environment and observation conditions,resulting in unsatisfactory monitoring accuracy and ***-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar(GBSAR)combined with corner reflectors was used to perform static load-loaded deformation destruction experiments on solid model bridges in a non-contact *** semi parametric spline filtering and its optimization method were used to obtain the monitoring results of the GBSAR radar’s line of sight deformation,and the relative position of the corner reflector and the millimeter level deformation signals under different loading conditions were successfully *** deformation transformation model from the radar line of sight direction to the vertical vibration direction was *** transformation results of deformation monitoring and the measurement data such as the dial indicator were compared and *** occurrence and development process of bridge deformation and failure were successfully monitored,and the deformation characteristics of the bridge from continuous loading to eccentric loading until bridge failure were *** experimental results show that GBSAR combined with corner reflector can be used for deformation feature acquisition,damage identification and health monitoring of bridges and other structures,and can provide a useful reference for design,construction and safety evaluation.

This paper presents a study on the seismic performance of square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns under different axial compressive loads. A total of four full-scale specimens using the steel tube with a width-to-thickness ratio (B/t) of 42 was tested by combined axial compression and cyclic lateral loading. In which, three specimens were subjected to constant axial compression, P = 0.15, 0.35, and 0.55P0, respectively, and one specimen was applied varied axial compression varying from 0.15 to 0.55P0 (P0 is nominal axial compression strength of the column) that is an assumption for designing exterior columns in a typical moment resistance frame (MRF) system. An identical loading protocol according to the AISC 341–16 code was adopted as the basis of cyclic lateral displacement loading for all four specimens. Test results reveal that there were significant differences in yielding and local buckling process in the steel tube, lateral (shear) strength, deformation capacity, and lateral stiffness degradation of the columns. For three CFST specimens with constant axial compression, the higher the axial compression was, the smaller the lateral strength and deformation capacity were. Another important finding in the specimen with varied axial compression, CFST42–15/55C, was a discrepancy in lateral strength and deformation capacity in positive and negative directions of cyclic lateral displacement. It was found that Specimen CFST42-55C possesses the lowest lateral strength and deformation capacity with the average ultimate interstory drift ratio (IDRu) of only 1.29% radian. The study results also show that these square CFST columns satisfy the highly seismic requirement when the axial compression has not exceeded 0.35P0 with their average IDRu of more than 3% radian. To improve the seismic performance of these composite columns, reducing the B/t limit is one of the most effective ways. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore P
