Cyclic Behavior of Steel Tube-Confined Circular RC Columns under High Axial Load

This study builds on existing researches to further investigates cyclic responses of the steel tube-confined reinforced concrete (RC) columns, with a primary focus on those subjected to high-axial load. A total of eleven column specimens were tested under lateral displacement reversal and axial load of either 0.3Agfcm,c or 0.5Agfcm,c, where Ag and fcm,c refers to concrete cross section area and tested concrete strength of the column, respectively. Three specimens represented the conventional reinforced concrete (RC) columns while the rest were the steel tube-confined circular RC columns. The key test parameters included (1) amount of longitudinal reinforcement, (2) axial load level, (3) continuity of the confining steel tube, and (4) clear cover of the longitudinal reinforcement. Test results showed that all the steel tube-confined RC specimens sustained the target axial load and maximum lateral strength up to around 10% drift ratio. A simple strength model was proposed to reasonably estimate the maximum strength of the steel tube-confined RC columns. The flexural rigidity ratio, (EI)test/Ecm,cIg, for RC specimens and specimens confined by continuous steel tube ranged between 0.6 and 0.8, approximately. Specimens confined by the cutoff steel tube showed lower (EI)test/Ecm,cIg ratio between approximately 0.3 and 0.6. © 2024 American Society of civil Engineers.

Anisotropic spatial variability of soil properties is frequently encountered in geotechnical engineering practice due to the complex depositional *** quantitatively evaluate the response of slope failure related to anisotropic spatial variability of soil properties and reveal the underlying influence of anisotropic spatial variability of soil properties on the slope reliability,this study integrates the random finite difference method(RFDM)into a probabilistic assessment framework and adopts general spatial variability and a cohesive-frictional soil slope example for illustration.A parametric analysis is carried out to investigate the influence of general anisotropic spatial variability of soil properties on slope failure probability and failure *** results show that the directional angles of scales of fluctuation of general anisotropic spatial variability significantly affect the slope failure *** dominant failure mode is the intermediate type in most cases of general anisotropic spatial variability,which is distinguished from the shallow failure mode occurring in the homogenous *** of cross-correlation between c and u(qc;u),scales of fluctuation(dmax and dmin)in general anisotropic spatially variable soils significantly influences the average slip mass volumes of deep and multi-slip failure *** with transverse anisotropic spatial variability,general anisotropic spatial variability significantly ampli-fies the effects of qc;u,dmax and dmin on slope reliability.

This study aims to analyze retrofitting existing residential buildings in China’s HSCW zone for green and ultra-low-energy goals. Three scenarios based on progressive energy targets are assessed. Scenario 1 achieves 40.35% carbon reduction, saving 133,118.49 kgCO2eq with NPV of ¥9,518.24. Scenario 2 achieves 58.63% reduction, saving 193,449.81 kgCO2eq with NPV ¥ 2,226.88. Scenario 3 achieves 64.66% reduction, saving 213,322.39 kgCO2eq with NPV ¥-10,588.95. Results expected to drive sustainable development and energy efficiency in buildings, meeting carbon reduction goals. © 2024 SPIE.

Urban air quality assessment in regard to biogenic emissions such as airborne pollen grains (PGs) is indispensable in the urban environment which significantly affects human health, climates, ecosystems, and energy production. Dispersion and deposition of PGs because of resuspension events (ReSE) are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The mechanisms in PGs movement are achieved through the Lagrangian formulation-based discrete-phase model (DPM). The observed pollen grains distribution pattern is highly spatially dependent on heterogeneous urban obstacles as it induces modified characteristics of the wind flow field. Wind-urban structure interplays in PGs concentration variation. The simulated results identify the pollen hot-spot zones, where vortical flow features and low wind speed dominate. This approach offers a detailed understanding of the dispersion patterns of airborne PGs in urban environments because of ReSE with high resolution. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The rapid increase in global urbanization,along with the growth of the construction industry,high-lights the urgent need for effective management of construction and demolition(C&D)*** technologies offer a viable solution to this critical ***,there remains a significant challenge in integrating these technologies into a cohesive *** study conducts a quantitative analysis of 214 papers from 2000 to 2023,highlighting the extensive use of artifi-cial intelligence(AI)and building information modeling(BIM),along with geographic information systems(GIS)and big data(BD).A further qualitative analysis of 73 selected papers investigates the use of seven different intelligent technologies in the context of C&D waste management(CDWM).To overcome current limitations in knowledge,future research should concentrate on(1)the comprehensive integration of technology,(2)inclusive studies throughout all lifecycle phases of CDWM,and(3)the continued examination of new technologies,such as *** on these insights,this study suggests a strategic framework for the effective implementation of intelligent technologies in *** framework aims to assist professionals in merging various technologies,undertaking lifecycle-wide research,and narrowing the divide between existing and new *** also lays a solid foundation for future academic work to examine specific intelligent technologies,conduct comparative studies,and refine strategic *** updates on technological developments are essential for stakeholders to consistently enhance CDWM standards.

construction Automation and Robotics is the anticipated technology to overcome productivity issues and work accidents. This research aims to analyze the implementation of construction Automation and Robotics at Indonesian construction SOEs from the perspective of real project implementation based on project life cycle, comparison with best practices, and potential uses, through the qualitative-comparative analysis of the literature as well as questionnaires and in-depth interviews. It attempts to report how this technology is implemented in Indonesia as a comparison tool for other countries. This research identifies that seven Indonesian construction SOEs have been using construction Automation and Robotics technology, where Drones, Virtual Reality, and Prefabrication and Modularization are the most popular and mostly implemented in the construction phase. Compared to best practices, those implementations are still in the adoption stage. It has not reached its full potential through the development stage due to insufficient collaboration between contractors, technology companies, and universities. Although the construction market in Indonesia has not directly demanded in-project applications, this technology is potentially considered to improve the completion of construction projects, especially the interaction prospects of Digital Twin and BIM. This study provides complete positional information on construction Automation and Robotics type in the project life cycle in theory and practice as a benchmark for construction technology research. This study fills the research gap and pioneers Indonesia’s construction Automation and Robotics implementation research in international journals by providing the latest and comprehensive overview and comparing it to good practices from the USA and China.

Effect of Waste Clay Brick Powder on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Cement Paste

Background: Investigations on the use of waste clay brick powder in concrete have been extensively conducted, but the analysis of waste clay brick powder effects on cement paste is limited. Materials and Methods: This paper discusses the effects of waste clay brick powder on cement paste. Fragmented clay bricks were grounded in the laboratory using a ball mill and incorporated into cementitious mixes as partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement. Workability, consistency, setting time, density and compressive strength properties of paste mixes were investigated to better understand the impact of waste clay brick powder on the cementitious paste. Four cement replacement levels of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5% and 10% were evaluated in comparison with the control paste. The chemical and mineral compositions were evaluated using X-Ray Fluorescence and X-Ray Diffractometer, respectively. The morphology of cement and waste clay brick powder was examined using a scanning electron microscope. Results: The investigation of workability exhibited a reduction of slump attributed to the significant addition of waste clay brick powder into the cementitious mixes, and it was concluded that waste clay brick powder did not significantly influence the density of the mixes. In comparison with the control paste, increased values of consistency and setting time of cement paste containing waste clay brick powder confirmed the information available in the literature. Conclusion: Although waste clay brick powder decreased the compressive strength of cement paste, 5% partial cement replacement with waste clay brick powder was established as an optimum percentage for specimens containing waste clay brick powder following curing periods of 7 and 28 days. Findings of chemical composition, mineral composition and scanning electron microscopy of waste clay brick powder demonstrated that when finely ground, fragmented clay bricks can be used in concrete as a pozzolanic material. © 2021 Sinkhonde et al.

The Role of Size in the Axial Strength Behavior of Square Concrete Columns Confined with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer

The axial compressive strength and ductility of large size square concrete columns wrapped with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) under uniaxial compressive loading were investigated in this study, considering the effects of column size, confinement ratio, and concrete strength. Parametric FEA studies on the effects of mesoscale column size and concrete strength on the axial load capacity of CFRP-confined concrete columns were conducted. The American Concrete Institute (ACI 440.2R-17) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA-S806-12) codes or provisions were also used to compare the finite element analysis results. The findings demonstrated that the axial compressive strength of CFRP-constrained square concrete columns is inversely correlated with the size effect. The impact of size on axial compressive strength decreases as the confinement ratio increases. CFRP confinement works better in low-strength concrete than in high-strength RC columns. The size effect also exhibits an inverse correlation with concrete strength. Compared to CSA-S806-12, the finite element numerical models showed nearly identical axial compressive stress–strain predictions with the ACI 440.2R-17 code provision. This research reveals significant relationships (supported by the Design of Experiments, the DoE) between column size, confinement ratio, concrete strength, and compressive strength of CFRP-confined concrete columns. These factors would be considered when applying CFRP confinement, especially for enormous square columns and seismic-prone regions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Shiraz University 2025.

Manhole covers are potential "dancers". They may leave their resting state and start "dancing". They may hover, move up and down, tilt, rotate, bounce, make noise, flip over, or even fly up into the air. In general, their motion looks chaotic, probably due to the nonlinear dynamics governing the system. The authors have previously derived basic models of dancing manhole covers covering the translational vertical motion of free covers and the rotational motion of hinged covers. In the current contribution the basic model is extended with tilting (without hinge) and bouncing behavior. Some fundamental problems and assumptions are discussed. Preliminary numerical results are shown together with 3D visualizations. Scientific curiosity into a mysterious phenomenon has been the motivation for this study. The obtained equations governing the manhole cover’s motion may serve as boundary conditions in hydraulic-pneumatic models of sewer-manhole systems (think of geysering and ventilation).
