Water distribution systems are critical infrastructure that deliver high quality drinking water to its consumers. Contamination events in water distribution systems (WDS) are emergencies that can cause distress in the population and require quick response from the responsible utility manager. While regular water quality parameters are monitored at water treatment facilities, it is still a challenge to monitor water quality in the WDS itself. Various models have been developed to explore the reactions and interactions of relevant stakeholders during a contamination event including agent-based modelling. Furthermore, recent research has shown that water demands have significantly changed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and these changes can affect the operation and management of water infrastructure. In this study, an agent-based modelling framework is developed to explore social dynamics and reactions of water consumers and a utility manager during a contamination event, while considering a pandemic demand scenario. Furthermore, innovative response and recovery methods to a contamination event are explored for rehabilitating the water network after a water quality deterioration. Graph theory algorithms are used to place mobile sensor equipment for surveying the water quality in specific network parts, and the distribution system is clustered by the status of endangerment. The Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) was developed using survey data around risk perceptions and social distancing behaviour that were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The agent-based model (ABM) was developed using output from the BBN and water use data that were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ABM is coupled with hydraulic simulation of the water infrastructure to evaluate changes in hydraulic performance. The model can be used to explore long and short-term consequences of the pandemic on water distribution systems' management, design, and operations;develop and optimize strategies

Tunnel construction in urban environments often requires passing beneath existing roads, where excessive soil excavation can lead to road cracking, settlement, or heaving, posing risks to road safety. Traditional road settlement monitoring methods rely on manual measurements, which are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly. Some existing approaches also require extensive sensor deployment, complicating installation and maintenance. To address these challenges, this study introduces a LiDAR-based method for efficient and accurate road settlement assessment. The impact of various LiDAR measurement parameters on assessment accuracy and efficiency was analyzed under typical urban road conditions. A comprehensive workflow was developed, incorporating both rough and fine alignment processes. Key steps in the workflow, such as automated identification of matching planes between point clouds, directional alignment, and angle fine-tuning, were automated using advanced algorithms. The proposed method was applied and validated in a region undergoing tunneling works in Singapore. Results demonstrated that the partially automated LiDAR-based approach achieved comparable accuracy to manual point cloud alignment methods while significantly improving efficiency and reducing labor costs. Furthermore, when compared to traditional total station methods, the LiDAR-based technique maintained errors within acceptable limits and enabled broader spatial coverage. Overall, this study highlights the feasibility and potential of LiDAR technology to enhance road settlement monitoring in engineering practice, offering a cost-effective and scalable alternative to traditional methods. © 2025 The Authors

This research aims to assess the adaptability of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) for the digital documentation of cultural heritage objects of varying size and complexity. We discuss the influence of object size, desired scale of representation, and level of detail on the choice to use NeRF for cultural heritage documentation, providing insights for practitioners in the field. Case studies range from historic pavements to architectural elements or buildings, representing diverse and multi-scale scenarios encountered in heritage documentation procedures. The findings suggest that NeRFs perform well in scenarios with homogeneous textures, variable lighting conditions, reflective surfaces, and fine details. However, they exhibit higher noise and lower texture quality compared to other consolidated image-based techniques as photogrammetry, especially in case of small-scale artifacts. © 2024 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. Recent studies show that intelligence planning and construction management, so the use of intelligence technologies and tools for interconnection, communication, and real-time interaction, are promising objects of research for many researchers and experts in the field of construction, architecture, and construction. By using intelligent tools, it is possible to contribute to increasing efficiency and effectiveness, high-quality management, and comprehensive health, safety, and environmental management. Based on these facts, the paper analyzes the current state of use of smart construction site tools in the Slovak construction industry. The research analyzed of current state of knowledge and use of smart tools in construction sector industry. One of the most serious and complex phenomena that can occur during earthquakes is soil liquefaction. Since Taiwan is located in the seismic zone of the Pacific Rim, where earthquakes and strong earthquakes occur frequently, the evaluation and prediction of liquefaction have attracted the attention of many authorities, researchers, and engineers in Taiwan. Therefore, in this paper, PLAXIS 2D software was used in conjunction with two model conditions, with and without deep excavation project, and two types of constitutive models, Hardening Soil model with small-strain stiffness (HSS) and UBC3D-PLM, to simulate a series of numerical analyses to predict liquefaction potential. The soil profile of Sanchong District, one of the metropolitan areas in Taiwan considered to be particularly susceptible to soil liquefaction, was selected as the soil profile. The results show that the UBC3D-PLM model has a relatively higher liquefaction potential than the Hardening Soil model with small-strain stiffness (HSS) for the model condition without the deep excavation project. However, the dynamic calculation using UBC3D-PLM model cannot be fully performed for the model condition with the deep excavation project. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Analysis of Fatal construction Accidents in Indonesia—A Case Study

Booming demand for facilities and infrastructure in Indonesia has led to an increase in construction-related accidents. Court rulings provide valuable data on accident circumstances, which can help improve safety standards. Although information on these accidents is scarce and not systematically consolidated, effective data gathering and analysis can lead to better safety outcomes. This study analyzes 150 court rulings in construction industry accident cases and their related decision frameworks to identify seven risk categories using scenario analysis. The correlative patterns and their associated significance are explored via descriptive statistical analysis, and four categories, namely project, task, accident, and medium, were found to be correlated. The results of the cross-tabulation test between two categories were used to highlight correlated categories. Toll road works accounted for 52% of accident cases, with collisions with construction machinery being the most frequent accident type (36%, 76 cases). Lifting and moving goods had respective phi and Cramer values of 0.534 and 0.001. It is obvious that future safety improvement efforts should focus on roadway projects and utilizing construction vehicles for transportation and lifting work. This can be achieved through increased regulatory compliance, proper utilization of standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensuring vehicle suitability. The results of this study are highly relevant to workplace health and safety officers and risk management personnel. © 2024 by the authors.

To further improve the installation efficiency of commonly used reinforced concrete composite slabs with lattice girders in China, an Improved Large Span Propping System is proposed. This article investigates the mechanical properties of the new propping system through in-situ monitoring. The monitoring results show that the displacement and stress of the prefabricated layer can meet the requirements of current Chinese standards, which indicates the feasibility of the new support system. Compared with the original Large Span Propping System, the new propping system can further utilize the bending stiffness of the prefabricated layer and reduce the installation amount of the lower propping frame. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This work proposes a refreshing technique that utilizes the Taylor expansion to improve the computational efficiency of the multi-frequency acoustic scattering problem. The Helmholtz equation in acoustic problems is solved using the boundary element method (BEM). In this work, the Taylor expansion is utilized to separate frequency-dependent terms from the integrand function in the boundary integral equation so that the wave number is independent of the equation system, thereby avoiding the time-consuming frequency sweep analysis. To conquer the non-uniqueness of the solution for the external acoustic field problem, the Burton-Miller method is used to linearly combine the conventional boundary integral equation and the hypersingular boundary integral equation. Moreover, to eliminate the computational difficulties caused by the Burton-Miller method, the Cauchy principal value and the Hadamard finite part integral method are used to solve singular integrals. Two-dimensional numerical examples are exploited to verify the effectiveness and compatibility of the algorithm for the multi-frequency analysis. © 2023, University of Split. All rights reserved.

Climate change is among the biggest challenges of our time. The construction sector is a contributor to this problem by emitting more than 36% of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. At recent climate change conferences hosted by the United Nations, commitments have been made by industry leaders including those in the construction sector to promote climate-friendly practices. Despite these commitments and debates on progress, there are still existing gaps on the mitigation strategies to minimise climate risks in construction activities. Available evidence shows continuous worse weather conditions affecting the development and management of construction projects with recent climatic disasters such as drought in the Horn of Africa, heatwaves in Southern Europe and wildfires in Hawaii, United States. These events highlight the demand for urgent actions towards climate-resilient construction project development pathways. Therefore, this study aims at analysing the climate risk mitigation strategies in the construction industry using a systematic meta-analysis review methodology. The findings demonstrate strategies such as training of construction management professionals to be equipped with climate management skills, adoption of net-zero and climate friendly technologies and procurement practices, build green and climate resilient projects, and retrofit existing buildings to withstand climate change. Practically, the key strategies presented in this study could serve as a checklist for the development of project management measures to minimise climate risks in the construction sector However, the results have revealed insufficient literature within the built environment on the topic which calls for further studies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

The diversification of urban mobility options, such as self-driving cars, personal mobility, and drones, and the sudden increase in logistics transportation have caused various safety hazards to burgeon in cities. Therefore, the need is also increasing for quick and accurate spatial recognition, along with information update-based dynamic object monitoring. Geospatial data, which are data from buildings, roads, and so on, do not change frequently, and the necessary time interval for updates in the case of changes is quite large. Hence, obtaining time- or date-specific information on changes in traffic, certain vehicles or pedestrians, changes in facilities, etc., is difficult. Currently, traffic is monitored through driver/pedestrian reports, CCTV, and probe vehicles, but owing to the limitations in update time interval and spatial recognition range, there are many cases in which severe accidents cannot be tended to within the golden hour. Therefore, dynamic mapping technology is being developed to consistently track and monitor dynamic SOC information in almost real time, including objects moving within cities and changing phenomena, through a fixed or dynamic platform. It is difficult to provide real-time information because the collected information must be matched with the street network. Furthermore, it is difficult to split the street network's composition of nodes and links into characteristic-specific areas based on the collected information. Therefore, in this regard, this study proposes a classification method for homogeneous speed spaces using a grid division method based on Geohash and various attributes to map the real-time big data generated using various sensors of the location, speed, and type of cars moving along urban roads.
