The students at Youngstown State University (YSU) are required to complete two courses, Specifications and Estimating (CCET 3711) and Hydraulics and Land Development (CCET 3724) at the end of the associate's program. Professor Sanson instructs the Specifications and Estimating course and Professor Korenic instructs the Hydraulics and Land Development course and have combined the final project of these two courses into a mini-capstone. This paper will describe how the mini-capstone project has been developed, the instruction the students receive in each of the courses, how the students implement the instruction in the capstone project, and the components that make up the project. The outcomes detailed and assessed in this paper are based on student performance and pertain to how well the students work as a team. Also assessed are how well each student was able to implement concepts learned in each class, which include estimating various aspects of a real construction project as well as their ability to determine the storm water volume quantities, specify erosion and sedimentation control measures, and design an appropriate storm water detention structure. The culminating event of the project is a professional oral presentation in which the students compile their findings of each aspect of the mini-capstone project. Traditional methods of wastewater treatment have been stretched to their limits because of the exponential expansion in wastewater production that has been caused by urbanisation. It is necessary for smart cities to implement solutions that are not just effective but also technologically advanced if they are to achieve ecological sustainability. The ability to monitor and adjust in real time is typically absent from the wastewater management systems that are currently in utilisation. According to the findings of the research, there is a gap in the combination of the Internet of Things and Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks (CRNN), which might lead to improved management strategies. This is necessary to address the ever-changing composition and movement of wastewater. According to the findings of the study, a novel approach might be implemented by utilising CRNN for predictive analytics and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time data collection methods. Together, they make it feasible to predict problems and maintain a close eye on the characteristics of wastewater in real time, which paves the way for proactive management techniques. It is because of the results, which reveal a significant improvement in the accuracy of predicting important wastewater parameters, that timely actions are now possible. The IoT and CRNN have been combined to provide enhanced adaptation to changing conditions, which has led to wastewater treatment techniques that are more sustainable and efficient. © 2024 IEEE.

Polyurethane foam adhesive(PFA)has been introduced as an alternative stabilizer in geotechnical applications because PFA can improve the engineering characteristics of soil by filling the pore space and generating adhesive bonding among the ***,the dynamic properties of PFA-reinforced soils are not well *** analyze the dynamic characteristics of PFA-reinforced gravels,a series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out to investigate the shear modulus and damping ratio of PFA-reinforced gravels,and to determine the corresponding effects of the PFA content,confining pressure,consolidation stress ratio and loading *** results showed that the shear modulus increased,and the damping ratio decreased as the PFA content,confining pressure and consolidation stress ratio *** contrast,the effect of the loading frequency,which ranged from 0.05 to 1 Hz,was negligible.A modified hyperbolic empirical model can consider the effect of the PFA content on the maximum shear modulus and predict the relationship between the normalized shear modulus and the normalized shear strain was ***,the upper and lower bounds of the damping ratio were also proposed.

In order to realize the safety evaluation of freeway alignment design in the design and construction stage and find out the potential traffic safety hazards, carry out a study on the expressway traffic accident prediction model. Based on the relevant alignment design, traffic characteristics and accidents data, build the primary accident prediction model, considered different conditions of alignment design and traffic control features of the influence of the traffic accident, adjusted the primary accident model by accident correction factor, established an active expressway accident prediction model based on alignment design and traffic characteristics, and carried out the goodness of fit test and example verification. The results show that the fitting effect of the model is good, and the accident prediction results are close to the actual accident data, which proves the validity of the model. The research results can provide theoretical basis for freeway improvement measures in the design and construction stage and improve the level of freeway traffic safety. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Based on the Zhipu Road-Fuxing Road large-diameter tunnel project, this paper analyzes the force characteristics of the segment during the synchronous grouting stage through theoretical research and field tests on the time-varying dissipation law of the force on the segment. It introduces the time-varying coefficient of the buoyancy force dissipation of the segment. The buoyancy force of the segment and the resistance to the buoyancy force are analyzed. The calculation formula for the buoyancy of the segment is derived using the method of hydrostatic equilibrium and is compared with the measured results. The findings show that by considering the time-varying dissipation force of the segment's buoyancy force, the final buoyancy of the segment can be better predicted. The calculation closely matches the measured values, indicating that the prediction formula for the buoyancy of the segment has high accuracy and reliability. © 2024 The Authors.

For assessing the safety performance of a structure in service, the ultimate pile bearing capacity is an important parameter. The literature indicates that experimental data on pile bearing capacity can be utilized to make quick and accurate predictions. Random forest is employed for these predictions, while five distinct algorithms are utilized to optimize the process: PSO, SSA, WSO, GWO, and DBO are all optimization algorithms used in engineering and computer science. These algorithms are designed to solve complex optimization problems by mimicking the behavior of animals in their natural habitats. An unused subset is selected randomly and evaluated with appropriate metrics to assess the model. Based on the results, the R2 values for the five models are 0.9103, 0.8766, 0.9410, 0.9133, and 0.9687 for RF-PSO, RF-SSA, RF-WSO, RF-GWO and RF-DBO. As far as Mean Absolute Percentage (MAP) is concerned, the RF-DBO model has the lowest optimal MAP. The RF-DBO prediction model has the lowest RMSE (3.6232) and MAPE among all models, making it the most accurate, stable, and effective in predicting pile capacity. It outperforms the RF-PSO, RF-WSO, and RF-GWO models in these categories. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Evaluation of the Performance of Reinforced Concrete Beams with 3D-Printed Permanent Formwork

Understanding the advantages of combining traditional construction methods and 3D concrete printing is the gateway to the general structural applicability of three-dimensional concrete printing (3DCP) technology. To further this ob-jective, in this study, 3D-printed concrete is used as permanent formwork for the manufacture of reinforced concrete beams. Different treatment methods for the interfaces between the printed formwork and the cast core concrete, including embedding of shear connectors, entraining of micro-cables, and inclusion of ribs in the 3D printing of the formwork, are explored to improve the integral mechanical capacities of so-called 3D-printed and cast-in-place composite beams. Specifically, flexural behaviors are studied experimentally through ob-servation of damage and failure processes via visualization with the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The mesoscale architecture at the interface between 3D-printed permanent formwork and cast-in-place concrete is investigated through computed tomography (CT) scanning to infer the cooperative bonding mechanisms of different bonding treatment methods. The stress-transfer mech-anism is thus elucidated. The applicability of 3D-printed concrete as permanent formwork is validated in view of a 14.3% increase in the bending capacity from a composite beam with bottom ribs compared to that of a completely cast counterpart. From the experiments, incorporation of shear connectors contributes most to the bonding performance of the formwork-concrete interfaces. Mean-while, interfacial bonding can be enhanced by increasing the roughness of the 3D-printed formwork, interlocking of the formwork with the inner aggregated concrete, or improving the consistency of the elastic and shear moduli of the formwork and cast concrete. Oil palm shell (OPS) and palm oil fuel ash (POFA) disposal from palm oil industry causes environmental pollution. The present research investigates the compressive strength and sulphate resistance of oil palm shell lightweight aggregate concrete containing palm oil fuel ash as partial fine aggregate replacement. Sieved POFA was used as partial fine aggregate replacement from 0% up to 20% by weight of sand. Water cured specimens were tested to determine compressive strength and durability towards sulphate attack. Use of 10% POFA slightly enhances concrete strength and durability against sulphate attack via pozzolanic reaction from the fraction of fine ash present. © 2022

The CWA Benchmark: A Seismic Dataset from Taiwan for Seismic Research

In recent years, numerous studies have employed deep learning in seismology, with data-driven neural network models increasingly becoming the norm in emerging research paradigms. Alongside advancements in model architectures, several benchmark datasets have also been introduced. However, many of these datasets suffer from imbalanced distributions, particularly a scarcity of large-magnitude events, which can impair the performance of deep learning-based models. Taiwan, situated in a seismically active region experiences a high frequency of earthquakes annually. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) in Taiwan maintains comprehensive records of these seismic events. This study introduces a benchmark dataset, named CWA, specifically compiled from this extensive database. The CWA benchmark includes 331 events with magnitudes greater than five, collected from a high-density seismic network spanning from 2011 to 2021, making it well-suited for training deep learning models. In addition, the CWA benchmark features over 40 attributes and ∼500,000 seismograms, providing valuable data labels for various seismology-related tasks. © Seismological Society of America.
