An investigation for integration of deep learning and digital twins towards Construction 4.0

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the potential integration of deep learning (DL) and digital twins (DT), referred to as (DDT), to facilitate Construction 4.0 through an exploratory analysis. Design/methodology/approach A mixed approach involving qualitative and quantitative analysis was applied to collect data from global industry experts via interviews, focus groups and a questionnaire survey, with an emphasis on the practicality and interoperability of DDT with decision-support capabilities for process optimization. Findings Based on the analysis of results, a conceptual model of the framework has been developed. The research findings validate that DL integrated DT model facilitating Construction 4.0 will incorporate cognitive abilities to detect complex and unpredictable actions and reasoning about dynamic process optimization strategies to support decision-making. Practical implications The DL integrated DT model will establish an interoperable functionality and develop typologies of models described for autonomous real-time interpretation and decision-making support of complex building systems development based on cognitive capabilities of DT. Originality/value The research explores how the technologies work collaboratively to integrate data from different environments in real-time through the interplay of the optimization and simulation during planning and construction. The framework model is a step for the next level of DT involving process automation and control towards Construction 4.0 to be implemented for different phases of the project lifecycle (design-planning-construction).

PurposeAs firms consider initiatives to enhance their social sustainability performance, supplier diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) have become significantly more important. As such, the purpose of this study is to theorize, operationalize and develop an empirical scale to measure supplier ***/methodology/approachThe following three-phase scale development method was used: first, identification of scale items from the literature;second, a qualitative component involving interviews with expert panels;and third, a psychometric evaluation through two survey rounds with 327 managers from multiple areas of supply chain *** not necessarily a new concept, this study provides a more complete understanding of supplier DEI beyond traditional aspects of supplier diversity (e.g. women and minority-owned suppliers) to feature additional considerations (e.g. LGBTQIAP+) and reflect broader societal considerations, such as human rights. CAC-Redes: a new and quali-quantitative model to increase the competitiveness of companies operating in business networks

PurposeThis paper proposes the "fields and weapons of the competition model applied to business networks" - CAC-Redes (in Portuguese, Campos e Armas da Competicao - Redes de negocio), an extension of the fields and weapons of the competition model (CAC) - to study the competition and competitiveness of companies operating in business networks in a competitive environment while integrating organizational competencies, interorganizational ties and company positioning to provide competitive ***/methodology/approachCAC-Redes is born from the cross-fertilization process of various theoretical perspectives, namely, industrial organization, traditional view of operational activities and resources, relational view, strategic alignment, transaction cost theory and social perspectives in networks, structured according to systems theory and under the mantle of competitive advantage theory. To discover the structure of existing models of competitiveness in networks, a bibliographic search was conducted in the Scopus database. Quali-quantitative empirical research was undertaken in companies from six different economic sectors through structured questionnaires and personal interviews to understand how companies competed and discover the determining factors of their competitive *** seven models of competitiveness in network were found, and their structures and characteristics are quite different from those of CAC-Redes. The Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry will benefit significantly from integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. This paper explores the immense potential of AI-enhanced XR in tackling the industry challenges. While AI and XR are currently employed independently, this paper proposes a framework for their integration, aiming to optimize resource allocation, elevate safety protocols, and enhance project accuracy. Supported by a SWOT analysis, the study presents practical implications and proposed use cases showcasing the application of AI and XR in AEC projects. Association between corporate diversification strategies and inventory performance: a firm-level investigation

PurposeThis research aims to empirically investigate the impacts of product and international diversification strategies on firm-level inventory ***/methodology/approachThis study empirically examines the associations between product and international diversification strategies and inventory performance based on a sample of 64,124 observations across 7,367 US publicly traded firms between 1989 and 2019 from the COMPUSTAT Segment, Fundamental Annual and Fundamental Quarterly data files. We employ both linear and nonlinear regression models to perform our empirical *** research provides strong evidence that there exists a U-shaped relationship between unrelated product diversification and inventory level and a partially inverted U-shaped relationship between international diversification and inventory level. We also find a positive impact of related product diversification on inventory level, but there is no significant curvilinear relationship between related product diversification and inventory *** implicationsOur research findings offer important insights into top management's strategic planning for diversification strategies and operations manager's inventory control policies to achieve the strategic fit between corporate diversification and inventory ***/valueProduct and international diversification strategies not only play an essential role in the firm's competitive advantage, but also have a significant influence on operations manager's inventory decision. Successful capital project organizations need to have a high degree of agility to anticipate and initiate change efforts with a transformative impact on strategy, structure, people, and culture. One question arises that contributes to organizational science: What makes an organization's response to change agile and its impact transformative? This study proposes a self-assessment "change response-impact (CRI) matrix" that allows decision-makers to map their change efforts across two variables: "change response" and "change impact." Through a survey distributed to the capital projects industry, data was collected on 60 change practices to identify the most critical and most challenging practices of each quadrant of the matrix. This paper focuses on exploring the change practices of the upper-right quadrant of the matrix, that is, for organizations with a high degree of agility and going through a transformative impact. Findings of this study can guide practitioners and researchers as they navigate successful organizational change efforts.

The role of network relations and previous knowledge in the ACAP of low-tech intensity clusters

Purpose The mainstream research on knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity (ACAP) in clusters was conducted in high-technology industries in developing countries. However, low technology intensity clusters present a different scenario that might affect this external knowledge transfer and ACAP. This study aims to understand the role of network relations and previous knowledge in the ACAP of a low-technology intensity cluster. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed companies from a low-technology industry in an emerging country. The authors collected 109 questionnaires from companies in the Brazilian footwear manufacturing cluster. Factor analysis led the independent variables to be regrouped into eight variables. This data set was analyzed using regression techniques. Findings In a low-tech cluster prevalently populated by small companies, companies have access to novelties and knowledge that influence their products and production through the frequency and stability of the network's relational ties with the supplier. The quality of relationships with clients may provide access to products, materials, technologies and learning. Small companies consider intra-cluster competition because of limitations in accessing external competition. Although low-tech companies need to exchange knowledge and technology with suppliers and clients outside the cluster, most companies are limited in size because of liabilities. In a low-tech cluster dominated by small companies, access to better purchasing costs, new technologies or innovations is an expected weakness. Intra- and extra-cluster ties positively influenced ACAP, as did organizational capabilities, whereas employees' skills did not. Originality/value Individual skills are not related to ACAP in low-technology intensity clusters. The level of ACAP in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can be explained by the scope of individuals' knowledge and other individual capabilities.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate the effects of internal stickiness (IS) on the success of projects through the perception of managers involved in projects. Design/methodology/approach This study collected 253 valid responses from project managers, using a validated IS scale and project success scale. The results were analyzed using nonparametric correlation due to the nature of the data. Findings The dimensions of success are interrelated, and IS, considering the barriers to knowledge transfer, is negatively related to all of these dimensions. This confirms the importance of the behavior of the individual and the team, rather than only formal processes to avoid IS and positively impact the success of projects. Practical implications The tacit and behavioral component of knowledge management needs to be further explored in practice. project management activities need to pay greater attention to knowledge development, knowledge transfer and learning between those involved in the project and within a company. Originality/value The study provides a better understanding of knowledge transfer barriers, represented by the IS construct, to the success of projects. The success of projects depends on the relationship with teams that include members of organizational sectors not related to the existence of permanent project management teams. The relationship contributes to the successful transfer of knowledge between the recipient and the source of knowledge according to the recipient's needs.

Clustering is an unsupervised learning method that provides insights by investigating unknown structures in a dataset without exploiting any ground truth target information. For constructing an as-built Building Information Models (BIM) from captured laser-scanned datasets, the segmentation process precedes modeling, which provides a baseline to be traced for obtaining 3D models from point clouds. For the segmentation process, a clustering algorithm can be effectively applied so that it can group the points having similar features without predefined criteria which, in turn, segments can be easily separated from the entire scene. Amongst various types of clustering algorithms, Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was developed as a density-based and hierarchical clustering algorithm which provides a simplified tree of significant clusters. This algorithm has several distinct advantages over other clustering algorithms: (1) avoids "flat" (i.e. non-hierarchical) labeling of data objects, (2) automatically simplifies the hierarchy into the most significant clusters, and (3) requires a single input parameter (i.e. minimum number of points) for density threshold. However, this algorithm has an overall computation time complexity represented as a quadratic form (i.e., O (dn2) ) which suffers from the computational efficiency issue especially for massive amounts of data such as those found in 3D point clouds. To ease the applicability of HDBSCAN to Scan-to-BIM applications, this research aims to parallelize major time-consuming components of HDBSCAN algorithm. OpenMP interface was adopted for thread parallelization and parallel efficiency was measured by calculating speedup and efficiency from strong and weak scaling results. © 2023, Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
