Modeling and simulation of VERA core physics benchmark using OpenMC code

Detailed analysis of the neutron pathway through matter inside the nuclear reactor core is exceedingly needed for safety and economic considerations. Due to the constant development of high-performance computing technologies, neutronics analysis using computer codes became more effective and efficient to perform sophisticated neutronics calculations. In this work, a commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) presented by Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) Core Physics Benchmark are modeled and simulated using a high-fidelity simulation of OpenMC code in terms of criticality and fuel pin power distribution. Various problems have been selected from VERA benchmark ranging from a simple two-dimension (2D) pin cell problem to a complex three dimension (3D) full core problem. The development of the code capabilities for reactor physics methods has been implemented to investigate the accuracy and performance of the OpenMC code against VERA SCALE codes. The results of OpenMC code exhibit excellent agreement with VERA results with maximum Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values of less than 0.04% and 1.3% for the criticality eigenvalues and pin power distributions, respectively. This demonstrates the successful utilization of the OpenMC code as a simulation tool for a whole core analysis. Further works are undergoing on the accuracy of OpenMC simulations for the impact of different fuel types and burnup levels and the analysis of the transient behavior and coupled thermal hydraulic feedback.& COPY;2023 Korean Nuclear Society, Published by Elsevier Korea LLC. Exploring crop maturity times as a conservation tool for improving resilience to human-elephant conflict: elephant crop-raiding

The purpose of this study was to alleviate negative impacts of elephant crop-raiding faced by smallholder farmers around the Okavango delta. Although many studies have identified the relationship between crop-raiding and climatic factors, little attention was paid to aligning cropping duration to high rainfall. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how crop maturity duration influences farmers' vulnerability to elephant crop raiding and food loss. An experimental plot consisting of early and late maturing varieties of maize, sorghum and cowpea was set up and monitored in farms adjacent to corridors. Early maturing varieties yielded more (mean = 0.35 tha(-1)) than later maturing varieties (mean = 0.25 tha(-1)). The prolonged stay of crops in fields exposed them more to elephants (p < 0.001). Unlike late varieties, early varieties served as an evasion strategy by allowing earlier harvesting when there was adequate rainfall and elephants rarely frequented farms. Late maturing varieties were harvested at 16-19 weeks when elephants frequented the fields. This harvest timing significantly influences the vulnerability of crops to debilitating elephant raiding. This outcome suggests that policy reviews should incorporate more climate action into smallholder farming systems to strengthen SDG 1: no poverty and SDG 2: zero hunger, ease hostility toward elephants and improve elephant conservation.

Analyzing Cost Overrun Risks in Construction projects: A Multi-Stakeholder Perspective Using Fuzzy Group Decision-Making and K-Means Clustering

The current research investigates cost overrun factors in structural projects, focusing on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region using Egypt as a model. A systematic literature review was conducted, analyzing 405 research papers published between 2000 and 2024, from which 69 relevant papers were selected to identify 48 key factors contributing to cost overrun. Using K-means clustering, these factors were grouped into three clusters based on their probability and impact, which were classified for their risk levels. To ensure robust analysis, a survey was conducted to gather expert opinions, resulting in 369 valid responses from owners, contractors/subcontractors, and management firms/consultants. The fuzzy group decision-making approach (FGDMA) was conducted to rank all 48 factors, offering a detailed assessment of their relative importance. Based on these rankings, the top 20 factors were identified for analysis to examine variations in stakeholder priorities, capturing differences in perspectives among multi-stakeholders. Sensitivity analysis and Tornado charts explored the critical variations among stakeholders, with management firms/consultants and owners prioritizing design-related risks, such as inconsistencies and delays in approvals, while contractors/subcontractors focused more on material waste. This novel integration presents a structured approach for analyzing, prioritizing, and mitigating cost overrun risks, offering a comprehensive framework that provides practical insights for stakeholders to improve cost and risk management strategies.

The customer service process is crucial to the success of any company, both manufacturing and services, regardless of its size and nature, due to direct contact with the customer before, during, and after the sale of products or services. In the current changing and complex context, a good product or service is not enough;it must be complemented with agile response times, the ability to resolve doubts, concerns, and problems, as well as personalized and friendly attention, which can improve or worsen the customer's perception of quality. Therefore, companies focus their operations on providing the best customer experience, from design to after-sales service. On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic intensified the use of non-face-to-face channels such as websites, chats, and telephone lines. These constitute communication channels with quick and convenient access, allowing customers to inquire about the products. Products or services of a company without having to travel to the offices or units, which is why it is necessary to improve the quality of the response and customer service continually. In this context, the Lean Six Sigma methodology is a valuable tool to improve efficiency and quality in customer service processes. This paper presents the application of Lean Six Sigma methodology to improve the time and quality of attention to a service company's non-face-to-face channel "telephone line" in a low- and medium-income country. The study problem focuses on long waiting times and the quality of care received. To address this problem, implementing the Lean Six Sigma methodology is proposed by identifying the activities that do not add value to waiting times and that impact the quality of the customer service process. This methodology was carried out through the identification of critical processes, the measurement of waiting times and service quality, the analysis of the data obtained, and the implementation of process improvements. During the COVID-19 pandemic, society has undergone significant changes with implications for employee values and job satisfaction. As a reflection of social needs, corporate social practice is also changing compared to before the pandemic. This paper examines the perception of corporate social practices by personnel and their impact on staff satisfaction. The empirical study carried out in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan allowed the authors to identify social practices that influence the level of personnel satisfaction with professional activity before and after the pandemic. The research determined general tendencies and differences in the perception of social practices with the most significant personnel satisfaction in the period before and after the pandemic. The authors also developed recommendations that should be taken into account when forming corporate social practices. The study's novelty is the investigation of an empirical relationship between the levels of satisfaction with professional activity and implemented social practices in the period before and after the pandemic. The research found that the tendencies in Russia and Kazakhstan are similar to the global trends. Employees before the pandemic were highly satisfied with their activities and corporate social responsibility practices. After the pandemic, when society is disconnected and individualized, employees are focused on material security, and social practices have no significant influence on staff satisfaction. The paper offers recommendations for companies to implement appropriate social practices for the common interests of employers and staff.

This study examined the effect of mother's parenting behavior on the school adjustment of first-year elementary school child mediated by the child's self-esteem using the causal model. Using data from the Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), the relationship among mother's parenting behavior (warmth, control), child's self-esteem, and child's school adjustment during the first year of school were studied cross-sectionally. A longitudinal study was also conducted to analyze the relationship between mother's parenting behavior and child's self-esteem pre-and post-elementary school enrollment. Results showed that mother's warm parenting behavior and child's self-esteem had a direct impact on child's adjustment to school. Also, the moderating effect analysis revealed that the impact of mother's parenting behavior on child's school adjustment was partially mediated by the child's self-esteem. In addition, mother's warm parenting behavior before child's elementary school enrollment also affected the child's self-esteem. Thus, mother's warm parenting behavior and child's self-esteem were discussed in this study in relation to the child's adjustment to school. © 2022 IEEE.

Knowledge generation and market orientation during global crises in supply chains

Purpose Supply chains (SCs) depend on interorganizational relationships (IORs) to function optimally, yet crises may lessen the knowledge flows therein. This paper aims to address this issue by proposing a mediation effect between knowledge generation and market orientation by crisis perception in SC. Design/methodology/approach Partial least square structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses. Data collection comprised 279 full answers of business-to-business organizations in global SCs. Findings The data provide evidence that, contrary to the extant literature, knowledge generation during a crisis in a SC does not mitigate crisis perception. In addition, findings suggest there are no significant differences between manufacturing and service SCs in sensemaking during crises and that during crises, SC links diminish cooperation in terms of knowledge generation and sharing and focus on individual performance. Originality/value The authors have found a conflicting theoretical issue - while extant literature posits setting IORs lead to high sunk cost, making IOR channels costly and reliable for information flows during crises, the behavioral perspective posits that when crises hit, exogenous shocks induce inwards focus diminishing information flows. The results provide insights on this seemingly inconsistent scenario and point to future avenues of research.

Inclusive and resilient shelter guide: accounting for the needs of informal settlements in Solomon Islands

PurposeThis paper aims to highlight the localised shelter solutions to fulfil adequate and disaster resilient housing needs of urban informal settlers of Honiara, the capital city of Solomon Islands, in a way that is sensitive to their unique challenges, values and aspirations, is gender- and disability-inclusive, and considers housing from the complete lifecycle of a disaster (pre-, during- and post-). Design/methodology/approachQualitative data was gathered through empirical research through five community workshops at five hotspot settlements, two stakeholder workshops and a stakeholder interview. Semi-structured questions as well as photographs of housing and settlement were used for data collection. With an emphasis on self-recovery, the identified shelter needs were then matched with the roles and responsibilities of the Government to support a process of "assisted" self-preparedness and recovery. FindingsThe output of the research was the Solomon Islands Shelter Guide. This paper draws from the Guide to present some of the findings. One of the key findings was an emphasis on shelter self-preparedness and self-recovery. However, in order for them to do that, they needed a combination of assistance - technical knowledge, materials and financial support - which is tailored to their settlement's specific needs and based on hazard damage assessment. While the Guide provides one form of the assistance (i.e. technical), this paper is a call for action from the Solomon Islands Government and shelter responders to fulfil the rest of the community needs for shelter adequacy. Research limitations/implicationsThe paper contributes to existing scholarship on shelter after disasters by adding "assisted" in front of self-recovery, in line with the limited access to resources by the most vulnerable to recover, despite housing being" a human right and definition of adequate housing (UN-Habitat, 2015, 2021), which includes freedom of choice, entitlements and meeting minimum ad

Information management (IM) is a critical component to projects in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. A defined IM process can improve a project's lifecycle, from project delivery to operations and maintenance. Typically, owners are the project stakeholders that can benefit the most from having a defined IM process as having current, relevant, and accurate information can improve decision-making and overall project performance. To this end, a longitudinal study of university construction contract documents with respect to IM was carried out. The focus was on universities as they are owners and operators who have a vested interest in their project's lifecycle. Researchers evaluated contract documents comprised of the construction manager at risk (CMAR) agreement and the general conditions document for one university system and these documents span 2002-2019. Three versions of the CMAR agreement and three versions of the general conditions documents were analyzed and compared using qualitative analysis and coding. The main areas of analysis were information transactions, IM systems, and legal factors impacting IM. Results of this analysis show that as new IM processes, such as building information modeling, were adopted in the organization, more specific language regarding the process of IM were included in the contract documents. These findings illustrate how IM has evolved over time in university contracts between owners and contractors.
