The return of the adult Pacific Lamprey offspring from translocations to the Columbia River

ObjectiveThe Pacific Lamprey Entosphenus tridentatus is valuable to tribal culture and to the ecosystem, but its abundance in the interior Columbia River has been highly variable and muted in recent years. Translocation programs have been adopted as a proactive strategy to restore Pacific Lamprey abundance to the interior Columbia River, including the Snake River basin, and these efforts have been largely successful in increasing larval and juvenile abundance in the recipient watersheds and further downstream. We address whether adult translocation offspring from three Columbia River Treaty Tribe programs return to Bonneville Dam in numbers that support previous model predictions;and whether Columbia River origin Pacific Lamprey contribute to adult production widely across the species *** used a genetic data set of unknown origin Pacific Lamprey that returned as adults to Bonneville Dam and broadly distributed locations within and outside of the Columbia River basin. We identified the natal origin of these adults via sibship or parentage to assign individuals to either a precise natal site of volitional production or a set of candidate parents from one of the translocation programs in the Columbia *** showed that not only have Snake River translocation offspring returned as adults to Bonneville Dam in numbers that exceeded model projections, but offspring from two other tribal translocation programs in the Umatilla (northeast Oregon) and Yakima (south-central Washington) rivers were also detected in recent years. Offspring produced across all three translocation programs are estimated at approximately 1065 fish in 2021. Although Pacific Lamprey are known to lack precise natal homing, which may limit the benefits of translocations in the interior Columbia River basin, evidence from detections in this study supports a preference by interior Columbia River Pacific Lamprey to return home and migrate toward their natal basins. The constant evolution and dependence of technologies on corporate business activities and processes brought an increase in electronic transactions in company processes and, consequently, a need for transformation in the project portfolio of the Internal Audit area. Based on these needs, technological tools such as Data Analytics appear as technical support options for audit project managers to extract,model, improve and optimize the analysis and scope of the data. The purpose of this report was to present how the implementation of technological Data Analytics tools contribute positively to increasing the efficiency of the internal audit project portfolios. The results showed that the implementation of this type of technology during internal audit projects and processes could reduce the intensity of the work, expand its reach in the results and increase the efficiency of production in time and cover the cycles of audited processes. The use of Data Analytics has positive advantages for the AI project portfolio and for the future of the area, such as better project planning, greater resource management, more comprehensive scope definition, agility in the execution of audit work, traceability and record of analyzes performed and performance increase.

An approach for identifying and selecting improvement projects

When improvement projects are properly aligned with an organisation's strategy, they help achieve strategic business goals. Often, however, it can be challenging for organisations to select the most appropriate improvement project(s) from a pool of many potential project ideas. To address this issue, this research proposes a new approach specifically developed to retain the value generated by other methods, but reduce the time/effort required for rigorous, objective project identification, and prioritisation/selection. As demonstrated through a real-world case example, this approach combines a modified form of process failure modes' effects analysis with a standardised version of a project desirability matrix and a possible, implement, challenge, kill chart to support both the effort required to develop ideas for improvement projects and the complex, multi-criteria decision-making process involved in prioritising/selecting improvement projects. The organisation where this case example was conducted obtained specific guidance regarding which improvement projects to pursue. Furthermore, this example provides direct evidence regarding the rigorousness and flexibility of the proposed approach from which other organisations can learn to increase improvement project success and build competitive advantage.

A framework to enhance disaster debris estimation with AI and aerial photogrammetry

This study addresses the critical need to enhance disaster preparedness and response, focusing on hurricane impact assessment and debris estimation. Accurate assessments in this context are critical for post-event search-and-rescue (SAR) operations and resource distribution. Recent computing advancements are revealing the potential of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in collecting data and assisting with post-hurricane reconnaissance. However, the use of AI and UAV photogrammetry for accurate disaster impact analysis remains underexplored. To this end, this study proposes a damage and debris analysis framework harnessing reality capture through aerial imagery and photogrammetry. Within this framework, a region-based neural network is leveraged to detect debris locations in aerial imagery with favorable performance. In a testbed within the Beaumont-Port Arthur region, in Southeast Texas, this study performs 3D reality captures of the built environment. Since the accuracy of the 3D reality capture is of importance in research areas associated with time-sensitive disaster response, we further investigate the optimal 2D aerial imagery overlap ratio required to generate a sufficiently accurate 3D model for disaster impact analysis and debris volume estimation. Results indicate that, in the case of aerial imagery for infrastructure systems, a minimum of 60 % overlap is recommended for damage assessment and debris analysis. In contrast, for flat green areas, a minimum of 50 % overlap is adequate. Overall, for disaster response applications, our study reveals that an overlap ratio between 60 % and 70 % is optimal for achieving a balance between time efficiency and data quality in aerial data collection. These quantitative recommendations are crucial for enabling efficient disaster response efforts. Additionally, our study outcomes will improve disaster impact analysis and facilitating timely and effective response strategies.

Learning from success: A machine learning approach to guiding solar building envelope applications in non-domestic market

Solar building envelopes, also known as Building Integrated PV (BIPV) show significant growth in Asia and Europe, although other regions such as Australia are still lagging. The decision to uptake BIPV is complex due to the heterogeneous interest of adopters and multi-dimensional features. Instead of redesigning BIPV in hypothetical buildings, we built a machine learning model using a database of real BIPV and building-attached PV (BAPV) applications, for the purpose of learning and predicting a BIPV adoption decision-making in nondomestic buildings in western countries. We used Australia as a case study to execute the support vector machine (SVM) prediction model. It was revealed that the combination of project determinants such as geographical conditions, equivalent building materials, interest rates and capital cost influenced the decision of BIPV. The prediction model provides pieces of information for stakeholders across the BIPV ecosystem to take their decision on investment, policymaking, and research directions. The current global industry transformation and innovations in technology are favourable to politically promoting and investing in BIPV. Such promotion and investment would help both expand the current market and reach the greenhouse targets.

In a context marked by an increasingly open information technology environment, with a significant flow of data, the exponential growth of cyber threats and attacks, the embedded security risk in every IT asset, and the challenges related to ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. Adopting an Information Security management System has become an essential requirement for organizations to meet their goals, and safeguard the interests of their key stakeholders, reputation, brand, and value-creating activities. This paper provides an overview of the challenges related to adopting the ISO/IEC 27001 standards by Moroccan firms. The paper analyzes the outcome of the questionnaire with security engineers: Chief Information Security Officer “CISO”, Security Operations Center “SOC” responsible, incident handling and response team, as well as IT engineers to evaluate the readiness of 62 enterprises to implement an ISMS based on The ISO/IEC 27001 standards. With an emphasis on ISO/IEC 27001 requirements and their significance, related trends, and key issues. In addition, we examine the correlation between ISO/IEC 27001 certification process and the Moroccan regulation. Our findings underscore the limitations related to establishing robust information security strategies within Moroccan enterprises and provide insights into the challenges encountered during the implementation of ISO/IEC 27001. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of awareness, policies and procedures to manage risks effectively including threads related to Artificial Intelligence and Cloud environment. As a result, this paper provides new insight and recommendations that should be considered in the Moroccan context, to assist companies in implementing ISMS and achieving the ISO/IEC 27001 certification.

The Construction Industry Institute (CII) is a research and development organization that focuses on the capital projects industry. With over 38 years of research, CII is a leader in the construction engineering and management (CEM) field. The objective of this research was to evaluate the impact of CII's research publications on recent construction engineering and management academic publications. Researchers utilized Google Scholar to identify academic publications that cited CII. Data were collected for the time range between August 2018 and August 2021, yielding a dataset of 354 academic publications and over 500 citations to CII research publications. Analysis identified "Constructability: A Primer" as the most frequently cited research publication in this dataset. Additionally, front end planning, constructability, and planning for modularization were the top cited CII Best Practices. These findings indicate the popularity of the front end planning and constructability best practices among CII's research publications. In addition to identifying the most frequently cited publications and best practices, there was also a gap with respect to publication citations related to strong areas of interest from the industry, such as advanced work packaging (AWP) and technology. These gaps identify some of the many opportunities for future research and development within the capital projects industry. Overall, CII's research has disseminated into broader CEM research and their future-looking research outlook drives the capital projects industry forward as it tackles more uncertainty and new challenges. © 2022 ASCE.

This paper presents the partial discharge (PD) testing on the plug-in gas-insulated switchgear cable termination taken out of service. The shield electrodes were designed to geometrically electric field control in the area of the insulation screen edge of the cable part. The PD test of the cable termination was performed. In addition, a computed radiography technique with X-ray was also performed to evaluate the mechanical integrity of the supporting spring of the cable termination. The fatigue of the supporting spring was evidenced. Moreover, the cable termination was disassembled and re-assembled to perform the PD test again. The PD characteristics, including PD magnitude, PD inception voltage (PDIV), and phase-resolved PD (PRPD) patterns, were reported. The PD test results revealed that the PDIV was lower than the operating voltage. Besides, the PRPD patterns exhibited internal discharge inside the cable termination. From the PD test results and computed radiographic, it was assumed that they might be caused by discharge in the interface between the stress cone and epoxy insulator.

Reducing the length of clinic visits: A process analysis case report

Because the University of Houston Student Health Center often had more demand for services than available appointments, the aim of this study was to streamline their clinic visit process. While appointments were scheduled for 20 minutes, the clinic's patient visit cycle time (from check-in to check-out) averaged 70 minutes. This report demonstrats how to perform process analysis using failure modes and effects analysis in order to identify the highest priority cause of waste and how to conduct a detailed evaluation of ideas using a prioritization matrix in order to select the best solution to help streamline a process. Analysis of this clinic's visit process identified that patients (mostly international students) asking many questions during their appointment regarding issues not directly related to their care led to long clinic visits. To address this issue, the clinic recruited a team of international students to create a frequently asked questions video with answers, and the final video was then uploaded to the clinic's Facebook page. Comparing before and after the video was posted showed the clinic's average time for a clinic visit was reduced by more than 15%, and it was able to accommodate nearly 100 additional patient visits per month.

Every year, buildings undergo services of adaptation to account for changes in users’ needs, deterioration, code updates, among others. This process, also called building obsolescence, is inevitable and most of these buildings lack a proactive adaptation plan. New buildings, however, can be designed to be more resilient when dealing with obsolescence by leveraging circular economy principles. The understanding of building obsolescence is crucial since they are the triggers of a process of adaptation. Studies have investigated different types of building obsolescence but have not focused on specific causes. Through qualitative analysis of interviews, we identified challenges faced by Architecture, Engineering, and Construction professionals in the building adaptation process. Recommendations to tackle these challenges were given, including the selection of durable materials, overdesign of key elements, design for disassembly, and use of modular systems. The research findings can help planners avoid common issues that harm the building adaptation process. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
