Distributed storage plays an essential role in realizing robust and secure data storage in a network over long periods of time. Distributed storage systems consist of a data owner machine, multiple storage servers and channels to link them. In those systems, secret sharing (SS) scheme is widely adopted, in which secret data are split into multiple pieces and stored in each server. To reconstruct them, the data owner should gather plural pieces. Shamir's (k, n)-threshold scheme, in which the data are split into n pieces (shares) for storage and at least k pieces of them must be gathered for reconstruction, furnishes information theoretic security, that is, even if attackers could collect shares of less than the threshold k, they cannot get any information about the data, even with unlimited computing power. Behind this scenario, however, assumed is that data transmission and authentication must be perfectly secure, which is not trivial in practice. Here we propose a totally information theoretically secure distributed storage system based on a user-friendly single-password-authenticated SS scheme and secure transmission using quantum key distribution (QKD), and demonstrate it in the Tokyo metropolitan area (

A simple technique to estimate the position of a mobile node inside a building is based on the Received Signal Strength (RSS). In a previous publication, we investigated the feasibility of using circular array antennas and beamforming in order to enable an access point to estimate the position of a mobile inside a building. The approach utilized the two dimensional information (i.e. RSS for various azimuth directions) that is captured in a priori measured radio map. Generating these radio maps is not only extremely labor-intensive and time consuming but also sensitive to changes in the environment and possible source of interference. It would be interesting to find out if a deterministic propagation model such as ray tracing can be used to construct a radio map that effectively replaces the off-line manual measurements. In this paper, we investigate this issue and provide a novel positioning methodology that exhibits acceptable performance without the need for extensive set of measurements in the off-line mode. The performance for various parameters and building model accuracy will be presented and discussed.

IEEE 802.16 issued standards for the new PHY and MAC for providing broadband wireless access network. It is characterized by very high data rates and wider range which are different from existing wireless access technologies such as IEEE 802.11 or 3G. Accordingly, the use of IPv6 over IEEE 802.16 network is currently undefined. There are several issues to be considered in deploying IPv6 over IEEE 802.16 networks. Among them, this document will describe issues related to NDP (Neighbor Discovery protocol) over IEEE 802.16 networks.

We present a framework, called AgentJ that extends the NS-2 platform to support the simulation and performance analysis of Java network applications. We particularly focus on the simulation of P2P networks and have already integrated the P2PS middleware for the simulation of super-peer networks for discovering participants in large scale Internet applications, which has a high significance for distributed multimedia applications to enable overlays for the discovery and searching across large numbers of distributed multimedia resources. AgentJ builds upon the numerous years of networking research with NS-2 and leverages the Protolib toolkit from NRL to facilitate the passing of real data between NS-2 nodes, thereby creating a platform for the simulation of content-based middleware and applications. AgentJ currently supports UDP unicast and multicast and maintains compatible programming interfaces with the standard Java network package as well as the NS-2 scripting interfaces employed for staging simulations

Assured Service, which is a service model of the Internet Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture is not currently well implemented on the Internet, mainly because TCP employs an AIMD (Additive Increase and Multiplicative decrease) mechanism to control congestion. In this paper, we analyze the problem and describe a marking rule, called RAM (Rate Adaptive Marking), which diminishes the problem. The RAM method marks sending packets, at a source node or at an edge router, in inverse proportion to throughput gain and in proportion to the reservation rate and throughput dynamics. We also discuss methods to implement the RAM strategy. Several experiments with the ns- 2 simulator are performed to evaluate the RAM scheme. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Assured Service, which is a service model of the Internet Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture, is not currently well implemented on the Internet, mainly because TCP employs an AIMD (Additive Increase and Multiplicative Decrease) mechanism to control congestion. Many studies have shown that the current Assured Service model does not assure the target rate of high profile flows in the presence of numerous low profile flows, and does not equably distribute the reservation rate of an SLA among multiple flows included in the SLA. In this paper, the former problem is referred to as inter-SLA unfairness and the latter problem is referred to as intra-SLA unfairness. We propose a marking rule, called RAM (Rate Adaptive Marking) that simultaneously diminishes both of these unfairness problems. The RAM method marks sending packets, at a source node or at an edge router, in inverse proportion to throughput gain and in proportion to the reservation rate and throughput dynamics. Three experiments with the ns-2 simulator are performed to evaluate the RAM scheme. The simulation results show that the RAM scheme may significantly reduce inter-SLA unfairness and the intra-SLA unfairness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Implementing OSI protocol stack in a multiprocessor environment

Parallel processing is a well-known approach to enhance the performance of communication subsystems. The several forms of parallelism embedded in communication protocols have been applied to the OSI protocol stack. However, the OSI protocol stack involves sequential processing due to the layered architecture. Thus, all the layers have been prevented from performing immediate processing as soon as the data arrives. To solve the problem, we apply a Multiple instruction Single Data (MISD) parallel scheme to OSI processing for the network layer through the presentation layer In the MISD scheme, different processors can be allocated to different layers and concurrently run the code for each layer. In contrast, the conventional approach adopts for a pipeline scheme that all the layers can be assigned to different pipeline stages and will be performed in a time interval;and their dependence. The implementations have been performed to compare the pipeline scheme with the MISD scheme on the Parsytec SuperCluster consisting of 64 Transputers. The measures show that the MISD scheme has performance improvement as high as about 84% in comparison with the pipeline one.

He is currently an Associate Executive Director of the Network Technology Division at COMSAT Laboratories. He has been involved in research and development activities in ISDN VSAT networks data communications and network systems and architectures. Prior to his current positions Dr. Chitre was a Principal Scientist in the Network Technology Division at COMSAT Laboratories. Dr. Chitre joined COMSAT Laboratories in 1980. He has made major contributions to the analysis and architecture of data communication ISDN and BISDN via satellite. Dr. Chitre directs and participates in the international and national standards activities in ISDN BISDN and data communication as they apply to satellite communication. He was Chairman of the Working Group on Protocols and Network Timing Function of the CCIR/CCITT Joint Ad Hoc Group on ISDN-Satellite Matters during 1990–1992. Currently he is the Chairman of the Working Group on New Technologies in the ITU Intersector Coordinating Group (ICG) on Satellite Matters. Dr. Chitre was a programme manager during 1990 and 1991 on a contract from INTELSAT on systems studies on satellite communications systems architectures for ISDN and broadband ISDN systems. Currently he is the technical manager of the DoD Contract on ATM via satellite demonstration and the programme manager for the INTELSAT contract on analysis and top-level specification of INTELSAT ISDN subnetworks and SDH compatible transport network. Key issues regarding the operation of the broadband integrated services digital network (BISDN) via satellite are presented herein. The specific issues, challenges, and their resolutions are detailed. In particular, the impact of error characteristics and propagation delay on the operation of BISDN via satellite is discussed. Solutions are presented for removing adverse effects and providing high-quality service to users of BISDN via satellite.
