Although file and printer sharing services have been deployed almost ubiquitously for a long time as part of Microsoft Windows, only recent peer-to-peer applications popularized file-sharing on a global scale. As theWindows CIFS protocol was designed for local area networks, its use has been confined to relatively small environments. We propose a mechanism to set up spontaneous virtual groups that allow to use legacy Windows file and printer sharing globally in virtual LANs.

In this position paper we propose an evaluation framework for networked mobile gaming, consisting of user, group, communication, and environment models. Each of these components acts as a detailed representation of real-world characteristics. The combination of these models allows a realistic modeling of mobile gaming scenarios. The main contribution of our approaches is a new class of mobility models, which are purely based on strategies derived from real-world scenarios. This allows us to simulate the behavior and the movement of users and groups, and the communication aspects, and thus, it facilitates a creation of test beds for mobile applications. These simulated users interact, e.g. communicate, with each other and are able to move purposeful as well as to build groups spontaneously depending on the similarity of their goals or individual strategies. The paper presents an analytic discussion of the framework, its architecture, and the current state of its implementation. Copyright © 2005 ACM.

A major objective of peer-to-peer (P2P) systems is the management of large amounts of data distributed across many systems. distributed hash tables (DHT) are designed for highly scalable, self-organizing, and efficient distribution and lookup of data, whereby data is stored globally persistent. The range of values of the corresponding hash function is partitioned and each interval is assigned to a node of the DHT. Because the assignment of data to nodes is based on hash functions, one assumes that the respective data load is distributed evenly across all participating nodes. However most DHT show difficulties with load balancing as we demonstrate in this paper. As a solution for this problem, we present a new and very simple approach for balancing stored data between peers in a fashion analogous to the dissipation of heat energy in materials. We compare this algorithm with other approaches for load balancing and present results based on simulations and a prototype implementation. This new algorithm improves the distribution of load in DHT without requiring major changes of the DHT themselves. In addition, we show that the fault tolerance of peer-to-peer systems is increased by the proposed algorithm.

While unstructured P2P systems have been embraced widely in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs), the applicability of structured approaches like distributed hash tables (DHTs) to such settings remains controversial. Existing research delivers promising empirical results addressing the concerns about performance, complexity, and reliability, but does not analyze the principles of combining DHTs and MANETs. This paper identifies and discusses the fundamental implications of non-infrastructural networks for DHTs and analyzes solutions to these challenges

Shortcomings of the existing IP technology, e.g. lack for mobility and multicast, have in practice not been successfully addressed. With the emergence of small personal networked devices, these shortcomings negatively affect the connectivity and usability of these devices. i3 tackles these problems as an overlay solution to existing protocols and infrastructure. It provides a homogeneous decentralized service platform in a scalable, reliable, and self-organizing manner. With indirection as its fundamental principle, the diversity of end-systems can be bridged and connectivity across private address space and firewalls can be ensured even in mobile scenarios. © 2005 Dagstuhl Seminar Proceedings. Among other things, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems are very useful for managing large amounts of widely distributed data. distributed Hash Tables (DHT) offer a highly scalable and self-organizing approach for efficient and persistent distribution and retrieval of data. However the scalability and performance of DHTs is strongly based on an equal distribution of data across participating nodes. Because this concept is based on hash functions, one assumes that the content is distributed nearly evenly across all DHT-nodes. Nonetheless, most DHTs show difficulties in load balancing as we will point out in this paper. To ensure the major advantages of DHTs – namely scalability, flexibility and resilience – we discuss three approaches of load balancing and compare them corresponding to simulation results. © 2004 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). Mobile devices have become a popular medium for delivering multimedia services to end users. A large variety of solutions have been proposed to flexibly compose such services and to provide quality-of-service guarantees for the resulting contents. However, low-level mobility artifacts resulting from network transitions (disconnected operation, reconfiguration, etc.) still prevent a seamless user experience of these technologies. This paper presents an architecture for supporting legacy applications with such solutions in mobile scenarios. Through network virtualization, it hides mobility artifacts and ensures connectivity at the network and transport level. Its adoption for multimedia applications poses unique challenges and advantages, which are discussed herein. © 2005 ACM.
