A UAV-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Covert Communication System

In this paper, an integrated sensing and covert communications (ISACC) framework is established for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, where one mobile UAV is deployed to provide sensing and communication services simultaneously, while there exists a malicious warden attempts to detect whether the UAV is communicating with multiple ground users during the whole flight. First, we consider that the communication signal from the UAV is hided under the cover of noise uncertainty in the presence of sensing signal. Then, to maximize the minimum achievable rate among all users with the required sensing performance and covertness, an efficient iterative solution is designed by jointly optimizing the power allocation, trajectory and communication scheduling of UAV. Numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of our proposed solution and demonstrate the fundamental trade-off between covertness, sensing requirement and communication achievable rate. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation in MIMO Grant-Free Random Access Networks

Massive machine communication is predicted to provide widespread and unparalleled connectivity for cellular Internet of Things (IoT) applications via multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and grant-free random access (GF-RA) techniques. Compressed sensing (CS) has been widely advocated to support massive connectivity due to the bursty nature of traffic transmission. In this paper, the joint activity detection and channel estimation in MIMO-enabled GF-RA system is formulated as a block single measurement vector (SMV) problem and efficiently addressed by using Bayesian-based CS algorithms. First, the pattern coupled sparse Bayesian learning (PCSBL) and block sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL) algorithms are introduced to solve this problem, where the potential block sparsity properties induced by multi-antenna reception are exploited by assigning the structured hyperpriors. Then, by embedding the Generalized Approximate Message Passing (GAMP) technique into the PCSBL and BSBL frameworks to enable effective approximation of posterior distributions, we propose two computationally efficient Bayesian learning algorithms, i.e., GAMP-PCSBL and GAMP-BSBL. Fortunately, the proposed Bayesian algorithms allow automatic learning of block sparse solutions without requiring noise level and user sparsity ratio as explicit conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms provide improved performance gains over the standard CS-based methods. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Power Minimization for Wireless Power Transfer Systems With Cooperative Zero-Energy Double-RIS

In this paper, a novel wireless power transfer (WPT) system is established with cooperative zero-energy double-RIS, where the internal reflection link between RISs and the nonlinear energy harvesting model are jointly considered. Aimed at minimizing the transmit power, the active beamforming at the access point (AP) and the reflection coefficients at cooperative doubleRIS are optimized jointly. To solve the formulated non-convex problem, an efficient algorithm that is based on alternating optimization (AO) and semi-definite relaxation (SDR) algorithm is designed. Simulation results are provided to highlight the superiority of our proposed solution by reducing at least 20.37% of the transmit power when compared to other benchmark schemes. Moreover, the impact of the AP's antenna number and the total number of RIS elements on minimizing the power is demonstrated. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Linear Feedback coding for Gaussian Relay Channel with Various Feedback Links

Linear feedback coding scheme, such as the elegant Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) scheme, receives much attention in the literature since its decoding error probability decreases as a second-order exponential in the coding blocklength. In recent years, a linear feedback scheme has been proposed for the Gaussian relay channel (GRC) with destination-source feedback, which combines the SK scheme and the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay strategy. Since there exists three possible feedback links in the GRC, then one question beckons: is there any rate gain if there exist multiple feedback links in the GRC, and can any other relay strategy outperform the AF strategy? In this paper, we answer this question by investigating four feedback models of the GRC, namely, the GRC with destination-source and destination-relay feedback, the GRC with destination-relay and relay-source feedback, the GRC with destination-source and relay-source feedback, and the GRC with all feedback links, respectively. We propose SK-type schemes for these feedback models, and numerical examples show that when the coding blocklength is not long, the rates of our proposed schemes almost approach their asymptotic values, and these rates may be larger than those of existing schemes in the literature. The study of this paper shows that different number/location of feedback links may bring additional rate gain in finite blocklength regime. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

The advent of sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems represents a transformative leap in global connectivity, moving from traditional internet of things (IoT) frameworks to an advanced artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) paradigm. This evolution presents significant challenges, primarily due to exponential growth in data volume, complexity, and latency requirements. To address these challenges, over-the-air (OTA) computation has emerged as a breakthrough approach by integrating computational processes directly into the communication framework, overcoming the inefficiencies of traditional separate designs. In this study, we explore the integration of OTA computation with reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) within multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks. RIS technology enhances signal propagation, mitigates interference, and optimizes wireless coverage, thereby complementing the OTA computation paradigm’s ability to facilitate real-time data aggregation and processing. Specifically, we propose a novel joint optimization framework aimed at minimizing the mean squared error (MSE) in multi-cell environments. This framework addresses the complexity of beamforming design through an innovative power-iteration-based majorization-minimization approach and a successive alignment technique. In addition, we perform asymptotic analysis to elucidate the performance benefits of large-scale MIMO and RIS configurations. We also consider the fairness of MSE computation throughout the multi-cell system. Finally, numerical simulations validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods and provide additional insights based on the asymptotic analysis. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Randomized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit Algorithm with Adaptive Partial Selection for Sparse Signal Recovery

The orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, known for its exceptional ability to reconstruct sparse signals, is a widely employed algorithm in compressed sensing. Numerous studies have provided theoretical analyses supporting its capability for achieving exact recovery. However, when applied to large-scale sparse signal recovery, the OMP algorithm incurs substantial computational overhead, leading to prolonged running time. To address this challenge, we design a Randomized OMP with Adaptive Partial Selection (AROMP) algorithm to mitigate computational overhead and reduce runtime. The novelty of the AROMP algorithm lies in its utilization of a randomized index selection method rather than a greedy approach to select the index in each iteration. Subsequently, we theoretically characterize the gap between AROMP and OMP for exactly recovering an s-sparse signal and show that the gap decreases as the number of comparisons K increases, sparsity s decreases, or signal dimension n decreases. As K approaches n-1, the gap between AROMP and OMP tends to 0. The experimental results substantiate that our proposed method significantly reduces running time while maintaining satisfactory accuracy in sparse signal recovery, face recognition tasks, and image reconstruction tasks. © 2025 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

This paper develops a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-assisted symbiotic radio (SR) system, in which the STAR-RIS is deployed to transmit extra Internet of Things (IoT) data and simultaneously enhance the downlink transmission. A simple and efficient ON-OFF keying modulation scheme is applied by the STAR-RIS to modulate IoT data, which allows a low-complexity IoT transceiver and avoids the signal ambiguity. This work aims to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of downlink users, subject to the minimum received energy requirement of IoT transmission. Under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI), an efficient penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to solve the WSR maximization problem. By leveraging the PDD framework, the STAR-RIS's coefficients are updated with close-form expressions. For the imperfect CSI case, the WSR maximization problem becomes a challenging stochastic optimization task. To address it, the constrained stochastic successive convex approximation framework is employed. Additionally, an efficient projection method is proposed to handle the STAR-RIS's amplitude and coupled phase-shift constraints. Simulation results reveal the performance trade-off between the downlink transmission and the IoT transmission and validate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over the benchmarks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Low Probability of Intercept Signal Design for MIMO Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

In this paper, aimed to protect the transmitted waveform from being intercepted by advanced electronic support measure systems, a low probability of intercept (LPI) signal design, taking into account the transmitted waveform and precoder of communication users, is developed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. The considered system simultaneously senses multiple targets and communicates with multiple users in the presence of various interferences. Specifically, based on the analysis of cyclic spectrum, the desired LPI performance is achieved by minimizing the cyclic frequency sidelobe level. Moreover, sensing and communication requirements are satisfied by respectively maximizing the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of targets and constraining the received SINR lower bound of each user. Energy budget and peak-to-average power ratio constraints are introduced to meet the practical resources limits, while similarity constraint is constructed to further ensure the target sensing. Next, in order to solve the formulated nonconvex problem, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed based on the idea of successive convex approximation (SCA). Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme and display the trade-off among LPI, sensing and communication performance. © 1972-2012 IEEE. All rights reserved.

Waveform Designs for Integrated Sensing and Communication with Low Probability of Intercept Based on the Cyclic Spectrum

In this paper, we investigate a waveform design for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems which simultaneously sense the target and communicate with the user. In this design, we apply the concept of low probability of intercept (LPI) to the waveform design for resisting intercept by the electronic support measure (ESM) system. Different from the conventional LPI waveform design strategies, the cyclic frequency sidelobe level (CFSL) is adopted as the LPI performance metric. We also employ the integrated sidelobe level (ISL) optimization to improve the sensing performance. Consequently, a new LPI ISAC waveform design is proposed with the objective of minimizing the weighted sum of the CFSL and ISL under the constraints of energy budget and peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR), as well as the similarity constraint to assure the communication quality. Then, to further enhance the sensing capability, a joint design of the transmit waveform and radar receive filter is proposed. As the formulated schemes require solving high-dimensional non-convex problems, efficient algorithms based on the majorization-minimization (MM) and alternating iteration are respectively developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed schemes is verified by simulation experiments. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Joint User Association and Resource Allocation for Self-Backhaul Ultra-Dense Networks

In order to meet the exponentially increasing demand on mobile data traffic, self-backhaul ultra-dense networks(UDNs) combined with millimeter wave(mm Wave) communications are expected to provide high spatial multiplexing gain and wide bandwidths for multi-gigabit peak data rates. In selfbackhaul UDNs, how to make the radio access rates of small cells match their backhaul rates by user association and how to dynamically allocate bandwidth for the access links and backhaul links to balance two-hop link resources are two key problems on improving the overall throughputs. Based on this, a joint scheme of user association and resource allocation is proposed in self-backhaul ultra-dense networks. Because of the combinatorial and nonconvex features of the original optimization problem, it has been divided into two subproblems. Firstly, to make the radio access rates of small base stations match their backhaul rates and maximize sum access rates per Hz of all small cells, a proportional constraint is introduced, and immune optimization algorithm(IOA) is adopted to optimize the association indicator variables and the boresight angles of between users and base stations. Then, the optimal backhaul and access bandwidths are calculated by differentiating the general expression of overall throughput. Simulation results indicatethat the proposed scheme increases the overall throughputs significantly compared to the traditional minimum-distance based association scheme.
