Joint Activity Detection and Channel Estimation in MIMO Grant-Free Random Access Networks

Massive machine communication is predicted to provide widespread and unparalleled connectivity for cellular Internet of Things (IoT) applications via multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and grant-free random access (GF-RA) techniques. Compressed sensing (CS) has been widely advocated to support massive connectivity due to the bursty nature of traffic transmission. In this paper, the joint activity detection and channel estimation in MIMO-enabled GF-RA system is formulated as a block single measurement vector (SMV) problem and efficiently addressed by using Bayesian-based CS algorithms. First, the pattern coupled sparse Bayesian learning (PCSBL) and block sparse Bayesian learning (BSBL) algorithms are introduced to solve this problem, where the potential block sparsity properties induced by multi-antenna reception are exploited by assigning the structured hyperpriors. Then, by embedding the Generalized Approximate Message Passing (GAMP) technique into the PCSBL and BSBL frameworks to enable effective approximation of posterior distributions, we propose two computationally efficient Bayesian learning algorithms, i.e., GAMP-PCSBL and GAMP-BSBL. Fortunately, the proposed Bayesian algorithms allow automatic learning of block sparse solutions without requiring noise level and user sparsity ratio as explicit conditions. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms provide improved performance gains over the standard CS-based methods. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Linear Feedback coding for Gaussian Relay Channel with Various Feedback Links

Linear feedback coding scheme, such as the elegant Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) scheme, receives much attention in the literature since its decoding error probability decreases as a second-order exponential in the coding blocklength. In recent years, a linear feedback scheme has been proposed for the Gaussian relay channel (GRC) with destination-source feedback, which combines the SK scheme and the amplify-and-forward (AF) relay strategy. Since there exists three possible feedback links in the GRC, then one question beckons: is there any rate gain if there exist multiple feedback links in the GRC, and can any other relay strategy outperform the AF strategy? In this paper, we answer this question by investigating four feedback models of the GRC, namely, the GRC with destination-source and destination-relay feedback, the GRC with destination-relay and relay-source feedback, the GRC with destination-source and relay-source feedback, and the GRC with all feedback links, respectively. We propose SK-type schemes for these feedback models, and numerical examples show that when the coding blocklength is not long, the rates of our proposed schemes almost approach their asymptotic values, and these rates may be larger than those of existing schemes in the literature. The study of this paper shows that different number/location of feedback links may bring additional rate gain in finite blocklength regime. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

This paper develops a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-assisted symbiotic radio (SR) system, in which the STAR-RIS is deployed to transmit extra Internet of Things (IoT) data and simultaneously enhance the downlink transmission. A simple and efficient ON-OFF keying modulation scheme is applied by the STAR-RIS to modulate IoT data, which allows a low-complexity IoT transceiver and avoids the signal ambiguity. This work aims to maximize the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of downlink users, subject to the minimum received energy requirement of IoT transmission. Under the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI), an efficient penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based algorithm is proposed to solve the WSR maximization problem. By leveraging the PDD framework, the STAR-RIS's coefficients are updated with close-form expressions. For the imperfect CSI case, the WSR maximization problem becomes a challenging stochastic optimization task. To address it, the constrained stochastic successive convex approximation framework is employed. Additionally, an efficient projection method is proposed to handle the STAR-RIS's amplitude and coupled phase-shift constraints. Simulation results reveal the performance trade-off between the downlink transmission and the IoT transmission and validate the superiority of the proposed algorithms over the benchmarks. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

The fourth generation(4G) mobile communication systems are offering service worldwide *** 4G systems could be loaded with much more services and data than previous systems, there is still a dramatic gap between the people’s practical requirements and what can be offered by the 4G ***, the research and development for the fifth generation(5G) systems have already been started. This article presents an overview of potential network architecture and highlights several promising techniques which could be employed in the future 5G systems. These techniques include non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA),massive multiple input and multiple output(MIMO), cooperative communications and network coding, full duplex(FD), device-to-device(D2D) communications, millimeter wave communications, automated network organization, cognitive radio(CR), and green communications. The state-of-art and implementation issue of these techniques are also addressed.

New sets of low-hit-zone frequency-hopping sequence with optimal maximum periodic partial Hamming correlation

Recently, Chung et al. gave a general method to construct frequency-hopping sequence set(FHS set) with low-hit-zone(LHZ FHS set) by the Cartesian product. In their paper, Theorems 5 and 8 claim that k FHS sets whose maximum periodic Hamming correlation is 0 at the origin result in an LHZ FHS set based on the Cartesian product, and Proposition 4 presented an upper bound of the maximum periodic Hamming correlation of FHSs. However, their statements are imperfect or incorrect. In this paper, we give counterexamples and make corrections to them. Furthermore, based on the Cartesian product, we construct two classes of LHZ FHS sets with optimal maximum periodic partial Hamming correlation property. It is shown that new FHS sets are optimal by the maximum periodic partial Hamming correlation bound of LHZ FHS set.

Construction of optimal 2D variable-weight optical orthogonal codes for high-speed OCDMA networks

A new construction method of two-dimensional （2D） variable-weight optical orthogonal codes （VWOOCs） is proposed for high-speed optical code-division multiple-access （OCDMA） networks supporting multiple qualities of services （QoS）. The proposed codes have at most one-pulse per wavelength （AM-OPPW） property. An upper bound of the codeword cardinality of the 2D VWOOCs with AM-OPPW property is derived. It is then shown that the constructed codes have ideal correlation properties and optimal cardinality. Moreover, the code length and the bit-error-rate （BER） performance of the proposed codes are compared with those of the codes proposed previously.

Virtual MIMO (VMIMO) in the uplink communication system is a promising technique focused in recent years. It groups two or more user equipments (UEs) with individual antenna to construct a VMIMO channel communicating with a base station (BS) simultaneously in the uplink. In this paper we consider two UEs collab.ration (2×2 VMIMO), and propose a novel pairing scheduling based on the SINR threshold combined with the system packet scheduling scheme. The proposed scheme has the advantage of low computational complexity and improves the system capacity without reducing the user's quality of service. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme combined with the Proportional Fair (PF) packet scheduling is able to reach greater system throughput which is more suitable for the real system while the proposed scheme combined with the RR packet scheduling scheme have the advantage of lower data packet lose rate which has the better quality of service. © 2010 IEEE.

With the development of high-speed railway all over the world, the reliability and communication of bullet train depends on the wireless communication between train and Base Stations (BSs) along the railroad. Traditional handover scheme of Long Term Evolution (LTE) network is that neighboring cell becomes better than an offset relative to the serving cell during Time To Trigger (TTT), it avoids ping-pong between two cells effectively, but in high-speed railway, it would lead to radio link failure as it can't trigger handover. On the other hand, it would cause false trigger and alternate signaling frequently if just cutting down TTT. This paper includes a brief overview of traditional handover scheme, followed by an analysis of it in high-speed railway based on LTE systems. The analysis emphasizes the effects of velocity on handover. A scheme based on the train's position is proposed. The scheme adjusts TTT and entering and leaving condition of trigger handover at different positions. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme triggers handover more effectively as compared with traditional handover scheme, thus decreases outage probability and improves handover success probability. © 2011 IEEE.

A general construction of inter-group complementary (IGC) codes is proposed based on perfect complementary (PC) codes,interleaving operation,and the orthogonal *** correlation properties of the newly constructed IGC codes can be described as follows:(1) the autocorrelation sidelobes of the codes are zeros in the zero correlation zone (ZCZ);(2) the cross-correlation functions (CCFs) between any two different codes of the same group are zeros in the ZCZ;(3) the CCFs between any two codes of different groups are zeros *** key point of this construction is that the ZCZ length of the generated IGC codes can be chosen *** is well known that there is a limitation between the ZCZ length and the number of mates;that is,the smaller is the length of ZCZ,the more are the IGC codes that can be ***,if we can choose the ZCZ length of the IGC codes flexibly according to the requirement of the system,more users can be accommodated in the system.

For the next generation wireless communication systems, inter-cell interference (ICI) is the primary cause of performance degradation in cell edge mobile stations of OFDMA multi-hop cellular networks with the frequency reuse pattern (1, 3, 1). This paper introduces a new fractional frequency reuse scheme to assign radio resources in OFDMA multi-hop networks to reduce inter-cell interference and maintain the sector frequency reuse factor at 1. Through the numerical analysis, we find that this scheme can yield higher SINR and improve the system capacity. Furthermore, the results also indicate that fractional frequency reuse relay system with local forwarding scheme can achieve higher throughput than local forwarding scheme in conventional relay system.
