Multi-photon neuron embedded bionic skin for high-precision complex texture and object reconstruction perception research

Attributable to the complex distribution of tactile vesicles under the skin and the ability of the brain to process specific tactile parameters(shape, hardness, and surface texture), human skin can have the capacity for tactile spatial reconstruction and visualization of complex object geometry and surface texture. However, current haptic sensor technologies are predominantly point sensors, which do not have an interlaced distribution structure similar to that of haptic vesicles, limiting their potential in human-computer interaction applications. Here, we report an optical microfiber array skin(OMAS)imitating tactile vesicle interlaced structures for tactile visualization and object reconstruction sensing. This device is characterized by high sensitivity(-0.83 N/V) and fast response time(38 ms). We demonstrate that combining the signals collected by the OMAS with appropriate artificial intelligence algorithms enables the recognition of objects with different hardnesses and shapes with 100% accuracy. It also allows for the classification of fabrics with different surface textures with 98.5% accuracy and Braille patterns with 99% accuracy. As a proof-of-concept, we integrated OMAS into a robot arm to select mahjong among six common objects and successfully recognize its suits by touch, which provides a new solution for tactile sensory processing for human-computer interaction.

The development status of the hotel industry in a city is also an essential factor influencing local tourism revenue. In the tourism industry, besides dining and attractions, which are hotspots for public opinion, the hotel industry is also a key area. In this context, it is crucial for hotels to address how to prevent such negative public opinion crises. In this paper, we use hotel review texts as an example to discuss how to use BERTopic and GRU networks to extract topics and analyze sentiment from guest reviews. This analysis helps understand guests’ focus and sentiment trends regarding hotels, enabling better grasp public opinion direction and user needs. Through topic extraction and sentiment analysis, we can extract crucial information from large scale hotel review texts. This enables monitor public opinion to help prevent large scale public opinion crises, allows for targeted improvements in the hotel industry, and supports decision-making for hotels and the tourism industry. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

With the rapid development of document digitization, people have become accustomed to capturing and processing documents using electronic devices such as smartphones. However, the captured document images often suffer from issues like shadows and noise due to environmental factors, which can affect their readability. To improve the quality of captured document images, researchers have proposed a series of models or frameworks and applied them in distinct scenarios such as image enhancement, and document information extraction. In this paper, we primarily focus on shadow removal methods and open-source datasets. We concentrate on recent advancements in this area, first organizing and analyzing nine available datasets. Then, the methods are categorized into conventional methods and neural network-based methods. Conventional methods use manually designed features and include shadow map-based approaches and illumination-based approaches. Neural network-based methods automatically generate features from data and are divided into single-stage approaches and multi-stage approaches. We detail representative algorithms and briefly describe some typical techniques. Finally, we analyze and discuss experimental results, identifying the limitations of datasets and methods. Future research directions are discussed, and nine suggestions for shadow removal from document images are proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first survey of shadow removal methods and related datasets from document images.

Curvilinear Structure segmentation has numerous applications in various fields, including providing a better understanding of defects such as cracks on roads or walls, thereby assessing the structural safety of buildings. Numerous curve segmentation methods based on Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) have been developed in recent years. However, preserving feature integrity remains a challenge. To address this issue, this paper introduces a double dynamic network, called DD-Net, which consists of a dynamic structure for training and dynamic masking for inference. Firstly, to enhance the nonlinearity of the model, a paradigm to auto-adjust the CNN structure via a trainable module is formed for better fine-grained feature extraction. This dynamic structure (DS) paradigm enables a trade-off to extract or discard the feature data in the model training. Due to the data heterogeneity between the training and inference data, models may contain some useless nodes that are less effective during inference. The dynamic masking (DM) is proposed to omit the useless nodes based on the score difference between the train and inference feature statistics, thereby reducing redundant computations. To further improve the model’s performance on thin-curve segmentation and to preserve feature integrity, we introduce a non-curve suppression (NCS) module. This module focuses on background information while considering foreground prediction to address noisy conditions. The experimental results show that our DD-Net achieves promising results on three benchmark datasets and outperforms state-of-the-art curve segmentation models. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Many sophisticated cloud platforms are available to provide services such as storage and computation for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. However, with the concerns about the semi-trusted nature of cloud platforms, data security and privacy have been gaining broad attention. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-assisted verifiable data sharing scheme (BAV-DSS) for IoT. The BAV-DSS features fine-grained access control, fast encryption, and outsourced decryption with verifiability. Specifically, with the application of ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE), flexible access control is enabled. Blockchain is employed to store public keys, generate account addresses, and perform data verification. Furthermore, the selective replayable chosen ciphertext attacks (sRCCA) security of BAV-DSS is proved, and the simulation results indicate that BAV-DSS obtains high efficiency and practicality compared to other schemes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Efficient Task Offloading in Double Roadside RIS-assisted Vehicular Edge Computing Networks Using Deep Reinforcement Learning

The concept of vehicular edge computing (VEC) has recently been envisioned as a promising paradigm to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) requirement of delay-sensitive intelligent applications in future networks. However, the limited radio frequency communication range necessitates the dense deployment of communication infrastructures to accommodate the increasing number of connected vehicles and data traffic. This could lead to growing equipment and energy costs, hindering the full realization of the VEC system. To address such limitations, we introduce a double roadside reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted VEC network in this paper, where RISs are deployed inside the coverage gaps between two RSUs to extend the service range. The research goal is to maximize the sum offloading efficiency by jointly optimizing offloading decisions, computation resource allocation, and phase shift vectors of RISs. Since the original problem is a challenging mixed-integer non-linear problem (MINLP), we decompose it into a top-problem for optimizing offloading destinations and phase shift vectors, and a sub-problem for optimizing offloading ratios and computation resources. We propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based algorithm for quickly obtaining near-optimal offloading decisions and phase shift vectors, alongside a Dinkelbach-based method for obtaining optimal offloading ratios and computation resource allocation. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm achieves near-optimal performance compared to other benchmarks and enables real-time decision-making. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

In the field of natural language processing, Knowledge Base Question Answering (KBQA) is a challenging task that involves accurately retrieving answers from structured knowledge. Existing methods often face issues when generating query statements using LLMs, as the knowledge introduced may be imprecise and the models themselves may exhibit hallucination problems, leading to low accuracy, particularly when dealing with complex questions. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel semantic parsing approach called RGR-KBQA, which adopts a Retrieve-Generate-Retrieve framework. The first retrieval step introduces factual knowledge from a knowledge graph to enhance the semantic understanding capabilities of LLMs, thereby improving generation accuracy of logical form. The second step uses a fine-tuned model to generate the logical form, and the final step involves unsupervised relation and entity retrieval to further enhance generation accuracy. These two retrieval steps help alleviate the hallucination problems inherent in LLMs. Experimental results show that RGR-KBQA demonstrate promising performance on CWQ and WebQSP datasets. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

This work presents an adaptive tracking guidance method for robotic fishes. The scheme enables robots to suppress external interference and eliminate motion jitter. An adaptive integral surge line-of-sight guidance rule is designed to eliminate dynamics interference and sideslip issues. Limited-time yaw and surge speed observers are reported to fit disturbance variables in the model. The approximation values can compensate for the system's control input and improve the robots' tracking ***, this work develops a terminal sliding mode controller and third-order differential processor to determine the rotational torque and reduce the robots' run jitter. Then, Lyapunov's theory proves the uniform ultimate boundedness of the proposed method. Simulation and physical experiments confirm that the technology improves the tracking error convergence speed and stability of robotic fishes.

Traditional signal recognition requires the design of multiple different deep neural networks to handle different signal recognition tasks, which not only fails to take into account the correlation among different subtasks, but also leads to large model size and higher computational complexity. In this work, we propose a multi-task learning-based multi-band signal recognition network (M2-Net) to simultaneously recognize the location of occupied frequency bands, modulation types, and signal types. The proposed M2-Net consists of two main parts: shared feature extraction network (SFEN) and multi-task classification header (MCH). In SFEN, a plug-and-play multi-task feature extraction convolution and an adaptive threshold denoising module are introduced to provide better shared feature extraction and denoising performance. In MCH, the shared features obtained from SFEN are further processed for different recognition tasks. Furthermore, during the multi-task model training, homoscedastic uncertainty is introduced as a task-dependent weight to adaptively balance the training loss of different tasks. To evaluate the recognition performance of the proposed method, we construct a multi-band signal dataset and compare M2-Net with several state-of-the-art models in signal recognition field. Experiment results show that the proposed M2-Net has significant performance improvements in terms of recognition accuracy and model complexity, especially under low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. © 2025 IEEE.

In this study, we introduce a novel Hybrid Federated Learning (HybridFL) approach aimed at enhancing privacy and accuracy in collaborative machine learning scenarios. Our methodology integrates Differential Privacy (DP) and secret sharing techniques to address inference risks during training and protect against information leakage in the output model. Drawing inspiration from recent advances, we present a HybridFL framework that combines the strengths of Homomorphic Encryption (HE) and Multi-Party Computation (MPC) to achieve secure computation without the computational overhead of pure HE methods. Our contributions include a privacy-preserving design for Federated Learning (FL) that ensures local data privacy through secret sharing while leveraging DP mechanisms for noise addition. The system offers resilience against unreliable participants and is evaluated using various machine learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP), and linear regression. Furthermore, we address potential external threats by deploying predictive model outputs as robust services against inference attacks. Experimental results demonstrate improved accuracy and convergence speed, establishing the viability of HybridFL as an effective solution for collaborative machine learning with enhanced privacy guarantees. © ICST Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2025.
