The relatively simple genome, short life cycle, and easy observation of Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) make it an excellent model organism for aging research. Age-stage prediction of C. elegans can help to assess the effectiveness of anti-aging interventions, better explore the role of individual differences in the aging process, and thus promote the development of medicine. However, there are still some problems in accurately predicting the age stages of C. elegans. On the one hand, there may be individual differences among C. elegans due to natural variation and environmental factors. On the other hand, nematode data sets are scarce and image information is complex. In this paper, we perform the age prediction task by studying the body contour morphology, biomarkers, and internal organ changes of C. elegans. Specifically, to address the effects of individual differences and datasets, this paper combines the body contour features, protein aggregation features, and pharyngeal terminal bulb features of C. elegans. In addition, considering the complex information of C. elegans images, this paper proposes a hybrid CNN and Transformer feature extraction method (DFCT), which can fully extract the global and local features of the image. A Dual Path Adaptive Feature Fusion Module (DAFM) is used to fuse the features. A series of experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the method proposed in this paper outperforms other methods in terms of accuracy and precision, especially in dividing 25 age stages into 3 categories, with an accuracy of 85.93%. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-Query Vehicle Re-Identification: Viewpoint-Conditioned Network, Unified Dataset and New Metric

Existing vehicle re-identification methods mainly rely on the single query, which has limited information for vehicle representation and thus significantly hinders the performance of vehicle Re-ID in complicated surveillance networks. In this paper, we propose a more realistic and easily accessible task, called multi-query vehicle Re-ID, which leverages multiple queries to overcome viewpoint limitation of single one. Based on this task, we make three major contributions. First, we design a novel viewpoint-conditioned network (VCNet), which adaptively combines the complementary information from different vehicle viewpoints, for multi-query vehicle Re-ID. Moreover, to deal with the problem of missing vehicle viewpoints, we propose a cross-view feature recovery module which recovers the features of the missing viewpoints by learnt the correlation between the features of available and missing viewpoints. Second, we create a unified benchmark dataset, taken by 6142 cameras from a real-life transportation surveillance system, with comprehensive viewpoints and large number of crossed scenes of each vehicle for multi-query vehicle Re-ID evaluation. Finally, we design a new evaluation metric, called mean cross-scene precision (mCSP), which measures the ability of cross-scene recognition by suppressing the positive samples with similar viewpoints from the same camera. Comprehensive experiments validate the superiority of the proposed method against other methods, as well as the effectiveness of the designed metric in the evaluation of multi-query vehicle Re-ID. Diffusion models, known for their success in various generative tasks like image generation and super-resolution, are applied in this study for point cloud generation, a field that has not been extensively explored due to the complexity of point clouds. We propose a novel method using a diffusion model to generate high-quality 3D point clouds from 2D sketches. This method employs a self-supervised contrastive learning scheme to align sketch and point cloud modalities. Additionally, it incorporates a specific partition mixing strategy to integrate edge information during pre-training. Evaluated on two benchmark datasets, our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art approaches, showcasing the potential of diffusion models in point cloud generation and setting a new direction for future research. © 2025 IEEE.

The purpose of domain adaptation is to transfer knowledge learned in the labeled source domain to unlabeled but related target domains without requiring a large number of target domain labels. The latest method of domain adaptation mainly adjusts the distribution of the source and target domains to adapt to the target domain. Despite significant success, when there are significant distribution differences between the source and target domains, the adaptability in the target domain still decreases, which may be due to insufficient exploration of domain specific features leading to domain offset issues. To address this issue, we propose the GSA-NET framework in this article. We designed an adversarial dropout method to improve the generalization performance of the model in the target domain by pushing the decision boundary away from the feature dense region. At the same time, in order to effectively match the distribution of advanced features across domains, we deploy feature adaptation modules before the classification layer, which can significantly reduce domain differences. Our experiments on two cross domain benchmarks, Office Home and Office-31, have shown that the proposed method is significantly superior to existing methods. © 2023 IEEE.

With the increasing demands for real-time accuracy in visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), the critical front-end component of SLAM systems has become the extraction and matching of image features to estimate camera motion pose. Existing feature extraction methods are susceptible to local feature point density and even overlap due to uncertainties in lighting intensity and surrounding environments, leading to uneven distribution of overall feature points. This, in turn, affects the accuracy of feature matching, thereby impacting the performance of the SLAM process. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel ORB image feature extraction algorithm based on fuzzy control. Initially, a Gaussian pyramid of the image is constructed, and the Intensity Centroid is calculated to ensure scale and rotation invariance. Subsequently, candidate feature points are extracted using ORB at each pyramid level, then the candidate feature points are selectively filtered through fuzzy control based on the number of candidate feature points and the magnitude of their response values. Finally, a BRIEF descriptor is established for feature matching. The proposed Fuzzy-Controlled ORB Feature Extraction (OFFC) algorithm was experimentally validated on open-source TUM and Mikolajczyk datasets. Results indicate that OFFC successfully avoids excessive density and overlap of extracted feature points, reduces mismatches in image feature points, and enhances the accuracy of feature matching. Notably, OFFC demonstrates adaptability and maintains robust performance in three challenging scenarios: image blurring, varying brightness, and dense similarity of image blocks, highlighting its significant practical value for visual SLAM. © 2024 SPIE.

Agriculture crop classification is helpful for agricultural production. However, it is challenging to classify crops from the agriculture image suffering from these problems: 1) Crops are often masked in complex backgrounds;2) There is high similarity between crop categories. To address these problems, an adaptive masking attention network (AMA-Net) is proposed for agriculture crop identification from natural images, where the adaptive masking (AM) module is developed to distinguish the crop from the complex background by selectively eliminating redundant information of feature maps, and the fair attention module is devised to identify similar crops between categories by modeling the fine-grained features. Experiments conducted on the benchmark show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed AMA-Net, achieving the performance of 96.65%, 96.65%, 97.13%, and 96.72% on the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, respectively, which is better than other state-of-the-art methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Modality gap between RGB and thermal infrared (TIR) images is a crucial issue but often overlooked in existing RGBT tracking methods. It can be observed that modality gap mainly lies in the image style difference. In this work, we propose a novel Coupled Knowledge Distillation framework called CKD, which pursues common styles of different modalities to break modality gap, for high performance RGBT tracking. In particular, we introduce two student networks and employ the style distillation loss to make their style features consistent as much as possible. Through alleviating the style difference of two student networks, we can break modality gap of different modalities well. However, the distillation of style features might harm to the content representations of two modalities in student networks. To handle this issue, we take original RGB and TIR networks as the teachers, and distill their content knowledge into two student networks respectively by the style-content orthogonal feature decoupling scheme. We couple the above two distillation processes in an online optimization framework to form new feature representations of RGB and thermal modalities without modality gap. In addition, we design a masked modeling strategy and a multi-modal candidate token elimination strategy into CKD to improve tracking robustness and efficiency respectively. Extensive experiments on five standard RGBT tracking datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed method against state-of-the-art methods while achieving the fastest tracking speed of 96.4 FPS. © 2024 ACM.

This article investigates the uplink performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) systems over spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels. We consider multiple RISs and low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) to improve the system energy efficiency (EE). We first provide an aggregated channel estimation technique with less pilot overhead. By exploiting the statistical channel state information (CSI), we further optimize the RISs’ phase shifts with the goal of minimizing the total normalized mean square error (NMSE) of the estimated aggregated channels. Subsequently, we derive the closed-form expression of the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) for quantization-aware minimum mean-square error (MMSE) combining. Third, based on the closed-form SE expression and power consumption model, we formulate and solve an optimization problem that maximizes the uplink EE under the constraints of transmit power and total ADC quantization bits. Specifically, by leveraging the Dinkelbach transform, Lagrangian dual transform, and fractional programming (FP) techniques, an alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithm is proposed to jointly obtain the bit allocation (BA) scheme among all access points (APs) and the uplink power control (PC) strategy for all users. Finally, numerical results validate the correctness of the closed-form SE expression and show the effectiveness of the proposed optimization methods for phase shift design and EE maximization. © 2014 IEEE.

A challenging problem in seeking to bring multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) techniques into real-world applications, such as autonomous driving and drone swarms, is how to control multiple agents safely and cooperatively to accomplish tasks. Most existing safe MARL methods learn the centralized value function by introducing a global state to guide safety cooperation. However, the global coupling arising from safety constraints and the exponential growth of the state-action space size limit their applicability in instant communication or computing resource-constrained systems and larger multi-agent systems. In this paper, we develop a novel scalable and theoretically-justified multi-agent constrained policy optimization method. This method integrates the rigorous bounds of the trust region method and the bounds of the truncated advantage function to provide a new local policy optimization objective for each agent. Also, we prove that the safety constraints and the joint policy improvement can be met when each agent adopts a sequential update scheme to optimize a κ-hop policy. Furthermore, we propose a practical algorithm called Scalable MAPPO-Lagrangian (Scal-MAPPO-L). The proposed method's effectiveness is verified on a collection of benchmark tasks, and the results support our theory that decentralized training with local interactions can still improve reward performance and satisfy safe constraints. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation.
