Parallel and Distributed Computing (PDC) is included in the computer Science Curriculum 2013 from ACM and IEEE computer Science and hence required for ABET computer Science programs, 2019 to 2020. It is a challenge to incorporate PDC into an existing full computer Science program. In this paper, we examine the feasibility and challenges of introducing PDC thinking at the lower level or upper level and evaluate the effectiveness of various PDC learning and teaching methodologies. Further, we propose possible teaching strategies and techniques for introducing PDC topics for both lower and upper-level undergraduate students.

Interfacial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), especially the SrTiO3-based ones at the unexpected interface of insulators, have emerged to be a promising candidate for efficient charge-spin current interconversion. In this article, to gain insight into the mechanism of the charge-spin current interconversion at the oxide-based 2DEG, we focused on conducting interfaces between insulating SrTiO3 and two types of aluminium-based amorphous insulators, namely SrTiO3/AlN and SrTiO3/Al2O3, and estimated their charge-spin conversion efficiency, θcs. The two types of amorphous insulators were selected to explicitly probe the overlooked contribution of oxygen vacancy to the θcs. We proposed a mechanism to explain results of spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR) measurements and developed an analysis protocol to reliably estimate the θcs of the oxide based 2DEG. The resultant θcs/t, where t is the thickness of the 2DEG, were estimated to be 0.244 nm-1 and 0.101 nm-1 for the SrTiO3/AlN and SrTiO3/Al2O3, respectively, and they are strikingly comparable to their crystalline counterparts. Furthermore, we also observe a large direct current modulation of resonance linewidth in SrTiO3/AlN samples, confirming its high θcs and attesting an oxygen-vacancy-enabled charge-spin conversion. Our findings emphasize the defects' contribution to the charge-spin interconversion, especially in the oxide-based low dimensional systems, and provide a way to create and enhance charge-spin interconversion via defect engineering. During the last decade, big data management has attracted increasing interest from both the industrial and academic communities. In parallel, Cyber Security has become mandatory due to various and more intensive threats. In June 2022, a group of researchers has met to reflect on their community’s impacts on current research challenges. In particular, they have considered four dimensions: (1) dedicated systems being data processing and analytic platforms or time series management systems; (2) graphs analytics and distributed computation; (3) privacy; and (4) new hardware.

HAMLET: A hierarchical agent-based machine learning platform

Hierarchical Multi-Agent Systems provide convenient and relevant ways to analyze, model, and simulate complex systems composed of a large number of entities that interact at different levels of abstraction. In this paper, we introduce HAMLET (Hierarchical Agent-based Machine LEarning plaTform), a hybrid machine learning platform based on hierarchical multi-agent systems, to facilitate the research and democratization of geographically and/or locally distributed machine learning entities. The proposed system models a machine learning solutions as a hypergraph and autonomously sets up a multi-level structure of heterogeneous agents based on their innate capabilities and learned skills. HAMLET aids the design and management of machine learning systems and provides analytical capabilities for research communities to assess the existing and/or new algorithms/datasets through flexible and customizable queries. The proposed hybrid machine learning platform does not assume restrictions on the type of learning algorithms/datasets and is theoretically proven to be sound and complete with polynomial computational requirements. Additionally, it is examined empirically on 120 training and four generalized batch testing tasks performed on 24 machine learning algorithms and 9 standard datasets. The provided experimental results not only establish confidence in the platform's consistency and correctness but also demonstrate its testing and analytical capacity. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. Unmanned aerial vehicles or drones quickly became cheaper, becoming more advanced and affordable to the general public. And the ease of control made them popular among people, who want to deliver various suspicious loads. UAV detection can be performed by different existing techniques, such as radar, radio frequency, acoustic and optical sensing techniques. Because of low-cost and low-power technology computer vision is considered as an effective method for detecting Unmanned aerial vehicles. Previous studies of UAV detection mostly have dealt with detection of UAV existence. The primary aim of this paper is to review recent research into the UAV detection and perform single stage loaded and unloaded UAV detection based on YOLOv2.

In the fundamental understanding of magnetic interactions between atoms in solids, the crystal lattice is one of the key parameters. As the effective tool for controlling the lattice using tensile stress is limited, there are only few demonstrations of the control in magnetic properties with expanding the lattice structure. Here, we observe that the Curie temperature (Tc) of quasi two-dimensional Cr2Ge2Te6 with NiO overlayer doubles from ~60 K to ~120 K, describe a clear correlation of magnetic properties with lattice expansion, which is characterized by several probes and computational approaches, and address on the mechanisms leading to the increase in Tc via the change in exchange interactions. Files in the backup of iOS devices can be a potential source of evidentiary data. Particularly, the iOS backup (obtained through a logical acquisition technique) is widely used by many forensic tools to sift through the data. A significant challenge faced by several forensic tool developers is the changes in the data organization of the iOS backup. This is due to the fact that the iOS operating system is frequently updated by Apple Inc. Many iOS application developers release periodical updates to iOS mobile applications. Both these reasons can cause significant changes in the way user data gets stored in the iOS backup files. Moreover, approximately once every couple years, there could be a major iOS release which can cause the reorganization of files and folders in the iOS backup. Directories in the iOS backup contain SQLite databases, plist files, XML files, text files, and media files. Android/iOS devices generally use SQLite databases since it is a lightweight database. Our focus in this paper is to analyze the SQLite schema evolution specific to iOS and assist forensic tool developers in keeping their tools compatible with the latest iOS version. Our recommendations for updating the forensic data extraction tools is based on the observation of schema changes found in successive iOS versions.

Fostering cooperative learning with Scrum in a semi-capstone systems analysis and design course

Agile methods such as Scrum that emphasize technical, communication, and teamwork skills have been practiced by IT professionals to effectively deliver software products of good quality. The same methods combined with pedagogies of engagement can potentially be used in the setting of higher education to promote effective group learning in software development classrooms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to integrate both Scrum and cooperative learning guidelines into a systems analysis and design classroom to promote the skills of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while learning systems analysis and design methods. This integration was implemented in a sophomore, semi-capstone design course where students were engaged in collaborative classroom activities. Two different approaches - overlapped approach and delayed approach - were used in two different semesters for this implementation. Based on the analysis of student performance in the course, student reflections on their team performance, and student overall perceptions of the teaching approach, this study suggests that the integration of cooperative learning and Scrum serves as guidance for students to effectively analyze and design software solutions, as well as to reflect on their team performance and learning process. In addition, a delayed approach for Scrum implementation appears to effectively support student learning by providing better and earlier feedback. © 2018 by the information Systems & Computing Academic Professionals, Inc. Isolating bandpass filters using time-modulated resonators

In this paper, we demonstrate for the first time an isolating bandpass filter with low-loss forward transmission and high reverse isolation by modulating its constituent resonators. To understand the operating principle behind the device, we develop a spectral domain analysis method and show that same-frequency non-reciprocity is a result of non-reciprocal frequency conversion to the intermodulation (IM) frequencies by the time-varying resonators. With appropriate modulation frequency, modulation depth, and phase delay, the signal power at the IM frequencies is converted back to the RF frequency and add up constructively to form a low-loss forward passband, whereas they add up destructively in the reverse direction to create the isolation. To validate the theory, a lumped-element 3-pole 0.04-dB ripple isolating filter with a center frequency of 200 MHz, a ripple bandwidth of 30 MHz, is designed, simulated, and measured. When modulated with a sinusoidal frequency of 30 MHz, a modulation index of 0.25, and an incremental phase difference of 45◦, the filter achieves a forward insertion loss of 1.5 dB and a reverse isolation of 20 dB. The measured non-modulated and modulated results agree very well with the simulations. Such nonreciprocal filters may find applications in wide-band simultaneous transmit and receive radio front-ends. © 2020, CC BY-SA.

Face masks are key personal protective equipment for reducing exposure to viruses and other environmental hazards such as air pollution. Integrating flexible and wearable sensors into face masks can provide valuable insights into personal and public health. The advantages that a breath-monitoring face mask requires, including multi-functional sensing ability and continuous, long-term dynamic breathing process monitoring, have been underdeveloped to date. Here, we design an effective human breath monitoring face mask based on a flexible La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO)/Mica respiration sensor. The sensor’s capabilities and systematic measurements are investigated under two application scenes, namely clinical monitoring mode and daily monitoring mode, to monitor, recognise, and analyse different human breath status, i.e., cough, normal breath, and deep breath. This sensing system exhibits super-stability and multi-modal capabilities in continuous and long-time monitoring of the human breath. We determine that during monitoring human breath, thermal diffusion in LSMO is responsible for the change of resistance in flexible LSMO/Mica sensor. Both simulated and experimental results demonstrate good discernibility of the flexible LSMO/Mica sensor operating at different breath status. Our work opens a route for the design of novel flexible and wearable electronic devices. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
