This paper presents an agentbased system (ABS) for the exploration of potential solutions to optimizing energy usage andreducing waste discharges in the printing anddyeing (Pd) industry. The behaviors of a Pd enterprise/plant emerge from interactions among lowlevel entities. Via these interactions among entities in different levels of hierarchy, materials, energy, and capital are transformed to products, wastes, and services. In addition, an enterprise is also designed as a BdI agent that has beliefs, desires, and intentions. The proposed ABS is used to simulate the activities of a Pd plant and their interactions with market and environment. A Pd enterprise in Xiaoshan district of Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province in China is used as in a case study. Three management strategies, including “businessasusual” strategy and the other two waste discharge tax strategies, are assessed. The results show how the effectiveness of strategies and the distribution of their impacts can be very different from what one would expect without the benefit of a simulation system.

Traditionally, the algorithm of Id3 takes the information gain as a standard of expanding attributes. during the process of selection of expanded attributes, attributes with more values are usually preferred to be selected. To solve such problem, a kind of AEd algorithm based on average Euclidean distance in decision tree is proposed in this paper. The algorithm uses the average Euclidean distance as heuristic information. The experiment results show that the improved AEd algorithm can avoid the variety bias of Id3 algorithm, and has no worse classification precision and less time cost than Id3.

Cellular operators are developing femtocells to improve network coverage for indoor users. But in current CdMA systems, heavy reuse of PN codes among femtocells causes ambiguity in choosing the target for handoff. To resolve the ambiguity, a method which uses reverse link (rL) sensing at femtocells has been proposed. This method uses rL measurements of the mobile's signal to choose the femtocell with the best forward link channel, as the handoff target. The robustness of this method to fast fading and shadowing is demonstrated in this work. By making multiple rL measurements, the error in handoff due to fading can be reduced, but at the cost of increaseddelay. The tradeoff between probability of error in handoff andrL measurement duration is demonstrated. It is also shown that unsynchronized measurements by femtocells cause a only marginal increase in the probability of handoff error.
