Analysis of tool wear in micromilling Ti6Al4V and its impact on generated surface integrity

Tool wear is one of the dominant factors that impacts the surface integrity of machined materials. Understanding the impact of tool wear on surface integrity is crucial in micromilling, due to the size of the features being machined and the cutting tools. Therefore, this work aims to analyse the impact of tool wear on surface integrity during the micromilling of Ti6Al4V. In this context, microslots were manufactured on a Ti6Al4V workpiece using both coated and uncoated 1 mm flat end mills at constant cutting parameters with varying cutting lengths in order to analyse the progression of tool wear with machined length and its impact on surface integrity. The microtools were investigated using both Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and infinite focus optical imaging (Alicona) to determine the tool wear evolution. Surface integrity was assessed by analysing surface roughness areal parameters, surface microscope images, and subsurface microstructure and microhardness perpendicular to the cutting direction. The results show that surface quality was not affected by the evolution of tool wear, with surface topography, including surface roughness parameters, remaining within a similar range until the catastrophic failure of the tool. Analysis of the machined surface revealed small chips adhered to it, which affected the surface texture height measurements, leading to a predominance of atypical peaks on the surface. Subsurface analysis of the machined material showed that the microstructure and microhardness remained consistent with the bulk material characteristics, indicating no evidence of severe plastic deformation in the machined subsurface. However, once the tool failed and began rubbing against the workpiece surface, swept grains due to material dragging and heat-affected zones were observed in the subsurface microstructure. Pilot study into the performance of inclusion plates used in deep ripping

Inclusion plates added behind deep ripping tines aim to facilitate the movement of topsoil layers deeper into the soil profile, creating longer-lasting pathways to deeper plant root development in situations where natural subsoil reconsolidation is likely. This Australian innovation has recently seen significant adoption in sandy-soil broadacre cropping contexts;however, the use of inclusion plates comes at the cost of higher draught requirements, and the mechanics of natural backfilling of topsoil layers into the inclusion gap has yet to be fully understood. The reported study was initiated with a scaled model of ripper tine fitted with scaled-inclusion plates replicating a commercial design. Soil-tool forces in a loose sandy soil were predicted by the discrete element method (dEM), with relative errors in the range of 2.4–19.1 %, while topsoil distribution within the inclusion space was predicted reasonably well (r2=0.75). The impact of a range of operational settings and plate geometrical parameters was also explored via dEM simulations. results suggest that a reduction in deep ripping speed and an increase in plate sidewall length can both be used to maximise the topsoil inclusion outcomes, while greater plate sidewall length generates minimal draught increase. Taller inclusion plates are required to include top layers deeper in the profile (such as to full ripping depth) but at the cost of a significant draught increase. The soil bin results were also validated in a field trial comparing a typical commercial inclusion plate with an extended sidewall design attached to a deep ripping tine at 4 and 7 km h−1 speeds. The results confirmed that the extended sidewall inclusion plate could effectively improve the extent of top-layer inclusion and is a viable way to further enhance the functionality and benefit of deep ripping. This brief research report analyzes the availability of digital Object Identifiers (dOIs) worldwide, highlighting the dominance of large publishing houses and the need for unique persistent identifiers to increase the visibility of publications from developing countries. The study reveals that a considerable amount of publications from developing countries are excluded from the global flow of scientific information due to the absence of dOIs, emphasizing the need for alternative publishing models. The authors suggest that the availability of dOIs should receive more attention in scholarly communication and scientometrics, contributing to a necessary debate on dOIs relevant for librarians, publishers, and scientometricians. © 2023, CC BY.

Military vehicles are generally equipped with hydro-gas suspension systems that exhibit better shock-absorbing capability over drastic dynamic environments compared to linear suspension. In order to implement suspension semi-active/active control in the future, it is required to develop the mathematical model of the vehicle using non-linear state space approach by incorporating the hydro-gas suspension trailing arm dynamics in the governing equations of motion. The present study formulates the non-linear state space approach which simulates single station ride dynamics of military vehicles. Incorporating the developed trailing arm kinematics and non-linear suspension characteristics, non-linear state space approach has been used to formulate the sprung and unsprung mass governing equations of motion. The multi-body dynamics model for the single station is established in *** in order to validate the non-linear state space model. The mathematical model is solved using MATLAB and compares well with the multi-body model simulations. The entire military vehicle non-linear state space model can also be developed which would be suitable for carrying out vehicle dynamics control studies with active or semi-active suspension systems. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The use of satellite imagery to classify scenes is of high importance in environment monitoring, surveillance, and in analyzing the scenes with other intentions for different functions. The recent developments of remote Sensing technologies have helped in the extraction of spatiotemporal data. Several techniques are advanced to perform automatic classification of the land scenes of remote sensing images. However, these methods are confronted with some issues when attempting to identify various scenes on the land. Heavy occlusion, complex background, objects which are too small to be recognized easily and objects of highly variable sizes are the issues which limit the models to a good degree of accuracy. In order to overcome these challenges a resNet-50 based deep learning framework is put forward to extract global features to effectively detect the complicated land scenes. In general, this framework is divided into two limbs. There the first branch deals with preprocessed grayscale image from different scenes while the next one investigates the so-called CLAHE preprocessed features. Performance analysis of the proposed framework is carried out on two standard databases Aerial image dataset and EuroSAT. The results of empirical observations based on resNet-50 gives the highest accuracy of the analysis for all calculated criteria, including accuracy rate, sensibility, and the specificity level compared to other similar models.

Background: The unending consumption of depleting fossil fuels has paved the way for renewable and circular technologies, and enormous effort has been put into garbage management to use them as carbon precursors. Methods: This study reports the first-ever supercapacitive behavior of carbon microtubes synthesized from a well-known waste material, packaging cardboard, through thermal conversion, which has been introduced as electrode material without any chemical treatment as a green energy storage device. Significant findings: FESEM and TEM imagining show the carbon microtube structure. The pore architectures, surface area, and chemical characteristics have been easily modified by adjusting the activation temperature. The thermal stability of the carbon microtube was tested by TGA analysis. Upon increasing the carbonization temperature from 400 °C to 900 °C, the specific surface area of the carbon material increased, whereas the contents of nitrogen and oxygen decreased notably, significantly impacting the electrochemical properties of the carbon-based supercapacitors. Excellent charge transfer characteristics of the thermally activated carbon microtube have been studied through EIS and CV analysis. The CV investigations show the electric double-layer capacitor (EdLC) for the 900CB electrode. Galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCd) calculations give a specific capacitance of 127 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. The constructed asymmetric solid-state capacitor shows an outstanding stability of 85% for 10,000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1, unveiling a phenomenal power density of 125 W kg−1 and an energy density of 36 Wh kg−1. © 2024 Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers

An efficient electrocatalytic in-situ hydrogen peroxide generation for ballast water treatment with oxygen groups

The in-situ electrochemical production of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) offers a promising approach for ballast water treatment. However, further advancements are required to develop electrocatalysts capable of achieving efficient H2O2 generation in seawater environments. Herein, we synthesized two-dimensional lamellated porous carbon nanosheets enriched with oxygen functional groups, which exhibited exceptional performance in H2O2 electrosynthesis. The carbon nanosheet electrocatalysts demonstrated high selectivity for H2O2 production, reaching 90 % at 0.33 V vs. rHE under neutral conditions. Maximum yields were achieved at 2238 mmol gcat−1 h−1 at −0.5 V in an H-type electrolysis cell and 3681 mmol gcat−1 h−1 at a current density of 150 mA cm−2 in a flow cell, with Faraday efficiencies exceeding 70 %. Notably, a continuous 9-hour electrosynthesis test produced a high cumulative H2O2 concentration of 1.2 wt% at a current density of 100 mA cm−2, highlighting the stability and scalability of carbon nanosheets. The outstanding performance of carbon nanosheets is attributed to the abundant basal plane C-O-C group, which provide optimal *OOH binding energy and minimal overpotential. Additionally, the in-situ generated H2O2 from the electrocatalytic system achieved complete sterilization within 60 min against Escherichia coli and several marine bacterial strains isolated from seawater. Furthermore, treatment of real seawater with H2O2 significantly altered the bacterial population abundance at both the phylum and genus levels, highlighting its effectiveness in microbial control. This study presents a high-performance electrocatalytic system for ballast water treatment, offering both scalability and environmental sustainability. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

This study involved the use of electrochemical polymerization to coat poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEdOT), polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and graphene oxide (GO) onto SUS316L stainless steel substrates, aiming to produce PEdOT:PSS and GO@PEdOT:PSS films. Following this, Ag@PEdOT:PSS and GO/Ag@PEdOT:PSS films were developed through the electrochemical deposition of silver nitrate. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated that adding GO increased the impedance of film, while AgNPs deposition decreased it, thereby enhancing conductivity. Films with AgNPs showed surface enhanced raman scattering (SErS) effects, as assessed using malachite green (MG). Compared to films without GO, the GO/Ag@PEdOT:PSS films exhibit enhanced conductivity and SErS detection performance due to the negatively charged functional groups on the GO surface forming a continuous layer of AgNPs. Moreover, antibacterial capabilities were evaluated through bacterial attachment and inhibition zone assays. Both Ag@PEdOT:PSS and GO/Ag@PEdOT:PSS films were effective in inhibiting bacterial adhesion, achieving up to 99.4 % and 99.0 % inhibition, respectively. In the inhibition zone assays, the GO/Ag@PEdOT:PSS film showed a 1.33 times increase in antibacterial efficacy compared to Ag@PEdOT:PSS. Furthermore, the effectiveness of electrodepositing antibiotics on these substrates was investigated, confirming optimal antibacterial performance. This efficacy is attributed to the synergistic interaction between silver nanoparticles and antibiotics, potentially reducing the need for antibiotics. The findings of this study highlight its significant potential for applications in antibacterial treatments and biomedical detection. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.
