Fluctuating wind power must be smoothed before supplied to a power grid in order to prevent potential damages of sensitive electrical devices connected to the grid. This paper considers a hybrid wind-solar thermal plant, where the output from the wind turbine is smoothed by bypassing through the thermal plant. We propose a chance-constrained MPC-based control method that optimally decides the ratio of the wind output that is bypassed through the thermal plant so that the rapid fluctuation of output is suppressed while the direct power output is maximized. The controller's parameters are designed in a way that result in a Pareto-optimal performance. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through simulations using real data.

Modeling of the Thermal Behavior of an Ultracapacitor

Ultracapacitors, also known as supercapacitors, have the potential to meet the increasing power requirements of energy-storage systems for automotive applications. As compared to batteries, ultracapacitors offer a higher power density, higher efficiency, and longer shelf and cycle life. Because the performance of an ultracapacitor depends on temperature, it is important to calculate accurately the thermal behavior of an ultracapacitor for the efficient and reliable systems integration in automotive applications. In this work, modeling is performed to study the thermal behavior of 2.7V/650F ultracapacitor from LS Mtron Ltd. The validation of the modeling approach is provided through the comparison of the modeling results with the experimental measurements. In Fig. 1, the variation of surface temperature with time from the experiment during the charge-discharge cycles with constant current of 180 A is compared with that from modeling. Fig. 2 shows the comparison between the surface temperature distributions based on the experimental Ir image and the modeling after 30 min during cycles. Model predictions reasonably reproduce the experimental data.

Hybrid vehicles (HEVs) and Electric vehicles (EVs) improve the efficiency of a drive and reduce CO_2 emissions by regenerative braking and operating the engine under optimum conditions. It is desirable to decrease the motor size and increase the maximum torque to minimize the driving units. For these purposes, motors employing permanent magnets have been commonly used recently. For HEVs and EVs motors, Toshiba developed the reluctance torque largely employed new motor named PrM, and has been applying to various vehicles. This paper describes the current motor development status in TOSHIBA.

This paper takes a gas-electric Hybrid Electric Bus (HEB) equipped with compressed natural gas (CNG) engine as the research object. According to the measured operating conditions, the torque distribution of HEB is optimized using instantaneous equivalent fuel consumption algorithm. The torque command of the engine is built in the lookup table, and the logic threshold control strategy of torque distribution and command lookup table are combined to obtain the optimal torque distribution strategy. Simulation results show that the proposed control strategy can control the hybrid system working in the efficiency area effectively in the prerequisite of real-time performance, and can better maintain the balance of battery SOC and improve fuel economy of the HEB significantly.
