A full-scale experimental house to develop comprehensive passive cooling techniques for affordable apartments in the hot and humid climate of Indonesia was constructed in the city of Tegal in 2020. It is a 2- to 3-storey apartment building with a pilotis on the ground floor, consisting of 12 units with a total floor area of approximately 2000 m2. This study explains the passive design concept of the experimental house, focusing on the ventilation strategies using a vertical void, and presents the results of a preliminary field measurement of indoor thermal environments. Major thermal parameters were measured under different ventilation conditions. The results showed that the structural cooling effect by the nocturnal ventilation was apparent, but it was difficult to achieve indoor thermal comfort during the peak hours by the nocturnal ventilation alone. This implies that further additional passive cooling techniques such as radiant floor cooling and evaporative cooling are necessary. Moreover, the effect of indoor wind speed on thermal comfort of the tropical occupants should be considered more in detail. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

A novel ensemble-based optimization technique is proposed for designing a robot manipulator variable stiffness joint. A multi-objective optimization is performed by considering the maximization of generated torque and the minimization of the weight of the joints. This investigation considers three design parameters (i.e., inner stator width, outer stator width, and magnet height) to maximize torque and reduce weight. Multi-objective ant lion optimization (MOALO) and multi-objective dragonfly algorithm (MOdA) optimization techniques are employed to generate Pareto fronts. These multiple Pareto fronts from the same algorithm are collated and condensed using non-dominated sorting (NdS) to reject the most dominant solutions. These new and improved Pareto fronts are called MOALO and MOdA ensembles. Next, the MOALO and MOdA ensemble Pareto front solutions are collated together, and NdS is performed again. The resulting Pareto front containing solutions of both MOALO and MOdA is referred to as the MOALO-MOdA ensemble. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Waste incineration has emerged as an increasingly important method for treating waste, ensuring stable waste disposal and offering the advantage of producing and utilizing thermal energy from the incineration process, thereby reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Understanding the composition and heating value of waste is important to ensure efficient waste management. However, information on waste composition and heating vary widely. Currently, in waste incinerator facilities, the heating value of waste is calculated;however, this method cannot ensure the accuracy of the overall application of incinerator facilities. To address this, this study calculated waste-related parameters (for heating value and composition) via an integrated reverse calculation algorithm, using real-time operational data. Using these values, we enhanced the accuracy of energy recovery efficiency calculations by developing a simulation model for the target system. Based on the model, we propose an operational improvement to increase the energy recovery efficiency of the target waste-incinerator system. Using the proposed method, energy recovery efficiency increased by approximately 10% relative to that of the existing incinerator operation. The methodology developed in this study can be applied to various incinerator systems. Our study findings contribute to the more accurate determination of energy recovery efficiency necessary for the effective implementation of waste-management policy in South Korea. © 2024, The Authors. Plates are non-curve structural elements used in civil, aerospace and marine constructions. Optimization of these structures is important for its longevity and safe design. This study uses a novel non-dominated sorting whale optimization algorithm (NSWOA) ensemble technique to optimize the design of laminated composite plates. The objective of the study is to maximize the fundamental frequency and frequency separation. The orientations of the fiber in each layer are considered the design variables. This study considers a rectangular plate with a symmetric arrangement of lamina under simply supported boundary conditions. The results obtained through the implementation of the NSWOA ensemble technique are presented, and this will assist in future research. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the manufacturing industry, producing a large quantity of highquality products every day is the top priority. recently, the integration of Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) equipment and deep Neural Network (dNN) defect image predictions has demonstrated a significant reduction in manual effort required for defect inspection in manufacturing industrial applications. However, during substrate manufacturing, changes in in-process conditions can lead to unexpected variations in defects, such as combinations of multiple defects or anomalies that humans are not familiar with. Consequently, mainstream dNN-based object detection (Od) methods have yet to achieve the desired accuracy for detecting these defects images in production line, and hence human visual inspections remain essential. In this paper, we propose a defect detection framework to both reduce the need for human examination and maintain the high quality of normal products for downstream processes. This method integrates three dNN methods: Od, anomaly detection (Ad), and auxiliary classification (AC). Od constructs hyperplanes for bounding-box objects and classes. Ad measures distances between embedding vectors trained from normal samples to detect anomalies. AC operates by centering the object proposed by Od within a cropped image and re-judging the object's class, which can refine Od's anchor-based training. We conducted an ASE manufacturing dataset experiment, and our method reduced human examination by 28%, with only a 2.8% underkill rate. Combining Od and AC achieved 93.21% defect classification accuracy, surpassing mainstream accuracy 89.74%. With the assistance of our new framework, we are able to simultaneously reduce the manual efforts for examination and increase the accuracy of defect classification. When applied in MFG production lines, this technology can surely assist our factory operation, enabling us to better meet a smart factory requirements.

In the era of Industry 4.0, edge devices in industrial settings generate vast amounts of data crucial for process optimization and Predictive Maintenance (PM). Traditional cloud-based approaches for handling this data are becoming untenable due to cost, latency, and privacy issues. Federated learning emerges as a viable solution, offering localized and efficient data processing while mitigating these challenges. This paper presents a Federated Convolutional Neural Network with Temporal Attention Mechanism (FedCNN-TAM) for PM tasks in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This model leverages temporal features in sensor data to enhance predictive accuracy. Evaluated on the CMAPSS dataset, FedCNN-TAM outperforms representative models with a significant performance gain. This model exhibits the potential for broader applications in industrial IoT, setting the stage for future research on its scalability and adaptability to multi-modal data types. © 2024 IEEE.

The enhanced static synchronous compensator (E-STATCOM), which is equipped with a supercapacitor and can output active power, is attracting attention as a compensator that can both suppress grid voltage fluctuations and maintain short-term frequency during transients. The authors propose a virtual inertia control based on current control-type converters. The method can suppress overcurrent and manage the dC voltage of the converter, which are issues with the typical grid forming control employing voltage control-type converters. The proposed control configuration is based on an established current-controlled STATCOM. However, a virtual synchronous generator control can be achieved simply by adding to the dC voltage reference of the conventional STATCOM control. The simulation results show that it is possible to achieve continuous operation for the three-phase line to ground fault, and STATCOM’s active and reactive power outputs are possible to suppress system oscillations after the fault is cleared.
