Low voltage direct current microgrids (dC-MG) provide a solution for increased efficiency by the reduction of conversion losses, total reuse of recuperation energy and an increased share of local power generation. Especially industrial applications ask for high uptimes and a stable voltage supply, which are both at stake in a power grid dominated by renewable generation. dC-MGs overcome these drawbacks by balancing energy distribution and power demand locally. For the planning and design of these grids a systemic approach is needed, due to the fact that many components are interacting. The task arises of structuring the knowledge available for individual technologies in an overall design framework. For this purpose, current state-of-the-art design processes are discussed in this article. These processes are mapped into the context of the requirements in an industrial environment. The findings are transferred to the design of industrial dC networks. Finally, a complete design process for dC-MGs is derived, which is proposed as a basis for the development of tools. © 2021 IEEE.

recently,MXenes have attracted considerable attention owing to their unique physical and chemical *** of MXenes to three-dimensional(3d)porous aerogel structures can play a critical role in realizing the profound implications of MXenes,especially for environmental ***,developing mechanically robust MXene-based aerogels with reversible compressibility under harsh conditions,such as liquid environments,remains challenging due to the insufficient interfacial strength between MXene ***,3d porous MXene-based nanocomposite aerogels are developed by dual physical and chemical crosslinking strategy with poly(vinyl alcohol)and formaldehyde in this *** developed MXenebased nanocomposite aerogels with designed interfacial engineering exhibit outstanding structural stability and extremely high reversible compressibility up to 98%strain as well as unprecedented mechanical durability(2000 cycles at 50%strain)in water ***,the aerogels show adaptable compressibility when exposed to different solvents,which is explained with the Hansen solubility *** to their high compressibility in water,the robust MXene-based aerogels exhibit excellent methylene blue adsorption performance(adsorption capacity of 117.87 mg·g^(−1))and superior recycling efficiency(89.48%at the 3rd cycle).The porous MXene-based nanocomposite aerogels are also demonstrated with outstanding thermal insulation ***,by synergistically taking their porous structure and super elasticity in liquid environment,the MXene-based aerogels show great promise in diverse applications including adsorption and separation,wastewater purification desalination,and thermal management.

Controlling Factors and Involved Mechanisms on Forming Alginate Like Extracellular Polymers in Flocculent Sludge

Alginate like extracellular polymers (ALE) recovered from excess sludge have been evaluated as an eco-friendly, cost effective and sustainable alternative to highly valued materials. However, the ALE extraction from flocculent sludge ranges normally from 90 to190 mg/g VSS, which is only equivalent to the lowest edge of the ALE production from aerobic granular sludge (AGS). As flocculent sludge is much higher in production than AGS, it is worth investigating the key factors controlling the ALE formation in flocculent sludge for potential applications. For this reason, some influent characteristics & operational parameters and the associated mechanisms were experimentally investigated with flocculent sludge in lab-scale sequencing batch bioreactors (SBrs). The results indicate that flocculent sludge with starch being a substrate contained the highest ALE production (220.3±8.0 mg/g VSS). Low temperature was more favorable to enriching ALE, up to 303.3±21.5 mg/g VSS at 12 oC. Moreover, ALE reached up to 137.8±13.2 mg/g VSS at C:N=5:1 and slightly declined with increased or decreased C/N. The specific ALE yield was 63.7 mg ALE/(g BOd5) at a low organic load, which was twice as high as those with high organic loadings. However, SrT had a minor effect on the ALE formation. Although a band of the factors controlling the ALE formation in flocculent sludge needs to be further studied, different parameters would exert significant influence on the composition and chemical properties of ALE, which also implies that the parameters could be controlled to directionally cultivate ALE with the unique structures. In a word, adjusting or optimizing the influent characteristics and operational parameters could improve the formation, production and characteristics of ALE for wide applications. © 2022, The Authors. This research explores the challenge of incorporating IoT with Machine Learning (ML) applications to Precision Agriculture, particularly the use of wireless sensors for irrigation control. Information from sensors that monitor key parameters including temperature, humidity, moisture, and water levels are used to forecast water requirements and control pumps. Support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (dT), random Forest (rF) and Naïve Bayes (NB) techniques are adopted for the analysis to find out their accuracy levels. It is observed from all the above-performed models that among all, the SVM has the maximum prediction rate of the given dataset and is slightly outperformed by only the dT and rF. The confusion matrix which points to the misclassification patterns of each model gives an insight into identifying the best ML approach for use. The convergence of IoT and ML guarantees flexibility and responsiveness when controlling and designing agricultural systems. It is this approach that has the potential to enhance water resources management as well as address issues precipitated by climate change and growing worldwide food demand.

The autoloading system for a hematology analyzer is composed of a linear drive, barcode correction unit, shaking mechanism, and piercing unit. This system uses the microcontroller to move the test tube to a certain position at the correct instance. This increases the number of tests that can be performed per hour, minimizes human error, and makes it more user friendly. The current effort is to optimize the autoloading system to increase its effectiveness and decrease its space utilization, while maintaining its aesthetics and handling capability.

Machine learning is opening up new ways of optimizing designs, but it requires large data sets for training and verification. The primary focus of this paper is to explain the trade-offs between generating a large data set and the level of idealization required to automate the process of generating such a data set. This paper discusses the efforts in curating a large CAd data set with the desired variety and validity of automotive body structures. A method to incorporate constraint networks to filter invalid designs, prior to the start of model generation is explained. Since the geometric configurations and characteristics need to be correlated to performance (structural integrity), the paper also demonstrates automated workflows to perform finite element analysis on 3d CAd models generated. Key simulation results can then be associated with CAd geometry and fed to the machine learning algorithms. With the increase in computing power and network speed, such datasets could assist in generating better designs, which could potentially be obtained by a combination of existing ones, or might provide insights into completely new design concepts meeting or exceeding the performance requirements. The approach is explained using the hood frame as an example, but the same can be adopted to other design components. Copyright © 2020 ASME

This paper studies the exploitation of triple polarization (TP) for multi-user (MU) holographic multiple-input multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) wireless communication systems, aiming at capacity boosting without enlarging the antenna array size. We specifically consider that both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with an HMIMOS comprising compact sub-wavelength TP patch antennas. To characterize TP MU-HMIMOS systems, a TP near-field channel model is proposed using the dyadic Green's function, whose characteristics are leveraged to design a user-cluster-based precoding scheme for mitigating the cross-polarization and inter-user interference contributions. A theoretical correlation analysis for HMIMOS with infinitely small patch antennas is also presented. According to the proposed scheme, the users are assigned to one of the three polarizations, which is easy to implement, at the cost, however, of reducing the system's diversity. Our numerical results showcase that the cross-polarization channel components have a non-negligible impact on the system performance, which is efficiently eliminated with the proposed MU precoding scheme. The bearings are vital parts for any rotating machinery and work as a key role for any machinery and dynamic system. For rotating machinery to work properly, the bearing should be healthy. This is necessary to ensure continuity and non-stop production. So, it is necessary to be supervised and monitor any rotating machinery for early detection of bearing faults. different techniques are in use for bearing faults diagnosis such as envelope analysis, Wavelet analysis (WA), Short Time Fourier Transforms (STFT), Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) and Neural Networks (NN). This paper presents a different approach for detection and classification of bearing faults using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS).The proposed data were taken via using accelerometer which is mounted on the bearing housing in Machinery Fault Simulator (MFS). The data is measured in the X and Y directions at 2100 rev/min and 51.2 kHz rotating speed and sampling rate, respectively. details of the design procedure and the results using the proposed method are discussed. The study is implemented offline in MATLAB environment. This article presents a comparison between the diagnosis based on ANFIS and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis. The obtained results are encouraging and promising in the field of diagnosis of mechanical machinery faults.

Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is an additive manufacturing process based on Material Extrusion (MEX) of polymeric filament. This manufacturing technology is commonly used for personalized production applications and prototyping, allowing to obtain customized parts with complex geometries at a low cost. However, this production technique has its limitations regarding dimensional accuracy and surface roughness of the final parts. To overcome these limitations, finish milling is considered to be a promising technique as it is widely used for metallic parts. Yet, the specific thermal properties of polymers such as low thermal conductivity and low melting temperature are adding a challenge in the determination of optimal cutting conditions. In this context, the use of cutting fluid could be the key to keep the material from melting during milling. Therefore, this paper proposes to compare the impact of using a compressed air flow to dry conditions on the cutting forces and the surface quality obtained on 3d-printed polylactide (PLA) parts. The qualification test of the tool-material couple standard (NF E 66-520-6) will be used as a guideline to determine the relevance of cutting fluid use for cutting conditions varying around an operating point. Moreover, simulated cutting forces using a mechanistic model will be compared to experimental data to evaluate the applicability of the model.
