Shoe press belts contribute significantly to the overall dewatering performance in the press section of a paper machine. Within the shoe press nip, the press belt faces a dynamic and multidimensional load that mainly leads to a compression of the structure. As this will cause a loss in void volume, knowledge of the dynamic compression characteristics of shoe press belts is crucial for optimized dewatering. A novel method was developed to examine the dynamic compression characteristics of grooved polyurethane press belts. Therefore, an experimental setup allowing realistic boundary conditions to test specimens was placed in a servo-hydraulic testing machine. Press belt specimens with different matrix material formulations and groove patterns were tested under varying load rates equivalent to different paper machine operational speeds. The results showed an evident sensitivity of the dynamic compression stiffness to the operational speed of the paper machine. This behavior was seen to be more sensitive to changes in the matrix material formulation than to adaptions of the groove pattern. As a result, the compression of the press belt within a shoe press nip is not only influenced by the peak pressure within the shoe press nip but also depends on the operational speed of the paper machine. Application: This study helps readers understand the impact of paper machine speed on the compression of shoe press belts, allowing them to choose a shoe press belt that provides optimized dewatering performance under specific operational conditions. © TAPPI Press 2025.

An anion exchange membrane(AEM)is generally expected to possess high ion exchange capacity(IEC),low water uptake(WU),and high mechanical strength when applied to electrodialysis *** different types of AEMs,semi-interpenetrating polymer networks(SIPNs)have been suggested for their structural superiorities,i.e.,the tunable local density of ion exchange groups for IEC and the restrained leaching of hygroscopic groups by insolubility for ***,the conventional SIPN AEMs still struggle to balances IEC,WU,and mechanical strength simultaneously,due to the lack of the compact crosslinking *** this work,we proposed a novel SIPN structure of polyvinylidene difluoride/polyvinylimidazole/1,6-dibromohexane(PVdF/PVIm/dBH).On the one hand,dBH with two cationic groups of imidazole groups are introduced to enhance the ion conductivity,which is different from the conventional monofunctional modifier with only one cationic *** the other hand,dBH has the ability to bridge with PVIm,where the mechanical strength of the resulting AEM is increased by the increase of crosslinking *** show that a low WU of 38.1%to 62.6%,high IEC of 2.12—2.22 mmol·g^(-1),and excellent tensile strength of 3.54—12.35 MPa for PVdF/PVIm/dBH membrane are *** work opens a new avenue for achieving the high-quality AEMs.

Vacationers always want to choose the hotel that best meets their needs and expectations. For this, they typically use online travel agents (OTAs). OTAs must analyze millions of images from thousands of hotels quickly and classify them accurately to best meet demands. This is a highly complex and challenging task. OTAs also have to choose a default image to represent best way each hotel in order to best market hotels to vacationers and encourage click behavior. This is another challenge to overcome. The biggest problem in classifying millions of images from different areas of hotels is that these areas often have similar objects and environments. For this reason, fewer categories have been used in deep learning (dL) studies conducted so far. In this study, two deep neural networks (dNN) have been developed to accomplish these challenging tasks. The first network is the "hotel image classification network" (HICNet), which classifies images of different areas of hotels into 11 categories. In a multi-class classification task that includes closely related categories such as bar, food, and lobby, the HICNet network achieved very good results, reaching an average of 79% precision, sensitivity, and F1-score. The second network is the "hotel default image network" (HdINet), which enables the determination of a default image for each hotel on the OTA page. HdINet can accurately identify the default image of hotels with an average of 92% precision, sensitivity, and F1-score. These networks have been integrated into the OTA system named *** and are currently in active use. © The Author(s) 2025.

Automated Vision-Based Fatigue Crack Growth Monitoring Based on Background Subtraction

Fatigue cracks commonly occur in structures subjected to cyclic loading. These cracks may lead to catastrophic structural failure once their size reaches the critical level. The accurate identification of the crack growth parameters of the material is essential for predicting the crack growth and the service life. Several approaches can be utilized for monitoring the fatigue crack growth given the requirements of the application. Traditional approaches such as the optical, compliance, and electric potential difference methods, usually require intensive labor and are difficult to automate. Other alternatives, like infrared thermography and digital image correlation, may require costly equipment and complex setups, in addition to the high level of training necessary to operate the equipment and interpret the results. To address these issues, this paper proposes an automated vision-based fatigue crack growth monitoring approach that utilizes the background subtraction algorithm. The approach treats the fatigue crack growth increment between detection intervals as an intruding object and identifies it within a series of successive images. The narrow field of view of the utilized microscope is expanded to accommodate the whole crack size by automated adjustment of the microscope location based on the identified crack tip location. The accuracy of the proposed approach was verified by fatigue tests on middle tension specimens under constant and variable amplitude fatigue loading. The crack monitoring process was conducted automatically in a real-time manner which reduced the potential for human-induced measurement errors. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper presents mobile robot navigating towards a target while subjected to random disturbance in the path of mobile robot. Various control strategies, including Proportional-Integral-derivative (PId) control, Adaptive Control, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) were implemented and evaluated. The results indicate significant differences in performance, with each control strategy exhibiting unique strengths and weaknesses in handling disturbances. This study contributes to the understanding of robotic control systems in uncertain environments.

Natural language in social media is often ambiguous, carrying diverse perspectives that are critical for opinion analysis. With vast amounts of unstructured data, particularly on platforms like Twitter, it is impractical to manually analyse relevant insights. This rapid data growth has highlighted the need for intelligent filtering and mining techniques in decision support systems to help organizations build brand reputation, foster online communities, and enhance profitability. Multi-Emotion detection is key for capturing implicit user opinions and specific emotional states;however, challenges such as text bipolarity, limited representative feature vectors, and inadequate annotated lexicons often hinder accuracy. This research aims to improve multi-emotion detection accuracy by extracting emotion implied tokens and converting them into feature vectors that capture semantic relevance. Using annotated lexicons, word embeddings, unigrams, and term frequency, these vectors are trained across five machine learning models, which are Naïve Bayes (NB), Logistic regression (Lr), Support Vector Machine (SVM), K- nearest neighbor (KNN), and Multi- layer Percepton (MLP). Finally, two ensemble techniques are applied to refine model outputs, achieving an improvement accuracy over previous work worked. The proposed system, evaluated on a real dataset, achieves a hamming score of 0.55 and an average F1 score of 0.68, demonstrating its potential for effective multi-label emotion detection. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper explores the idea of locating the student’s location within the organization/institute. This is done by using a GPS-based receiver modem attached to Id card of student and using a SQL coded database. Initially, the system is provided with all the coordinates of the places within organization/institute, and these coordinates (latitude, longitude and altitude) are stored in a lookup table (LUT) in the database. When the student with the GPS receiver roams inside the campus, his coordinates are recorded by the GPS modem and sent to the database via Internet (cellular/Wi-Fi network). This coordinates are then compared with the coordinates in the LUT;if the coordinates are matched with any of the contents in LUT, then the system identifies this and knows the location of student;otherwise, the student is considered as out of campus. Any authorized person can access this data, i.e., students’ location at any time by either Web site or the application provided to the person by entering the unique Id number of the person who is to be tracked. Programming the NodeMCU has been developed in C environment with a self-made SQL database and person location data transfer to Internet of things using ThingSpeak software. The objective of this work is to study the performance of an industrial complex servo gripper mechanism (ICSGM) in terms of position and speed. This aim is to design and develop an ICSGM that will have the potential to reach a high number of demands in the automation and robotic industries. In the palletizing industry, the design and control of the robotic grippers are the essential part of a system. depending on the application, different types of holders and movements may be required to pick and place the products. This servo gripper includes a combination of angular mechanism and parallel mechanism, this gripper system that allows linear and angular motions for pick and place operations is investigated for design and control purposes. The drive system of the gripper allows the controller to move the system both angularly and linearly. The performance of the ICSGM mechanism is based on comparing its position error and response time with the parallel mechanism and angular mechanism. The position efficiency of these ICSGM is calculated from the position root mean square error (PrMSE). It is the difference of errors between the two measured position signals (input signal from the incremental encoder and output signal from the linear encoder). In this paper, the Force-PId (Proportional-Integral-derivative) controller is developed in PLC with Siemens SCL programming language. The Controller input is the position error and error rate. In addition, system analysis by inventor software design is included in the study. In the experimental setup, an asynchronous motor and 2048 pulse incremental encoders have been used. Finally, the positioning efficiency of these ICSGM is examined and compared under different working plan circumstances. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, PId (Proportional-Integral-derivative), cascade, and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) controllers are developed for the Pitch and Yaw angles of a two-degrees-of-freedom helicopter system (2-dOF HS). Two different FLCs are used for Pitch and yaw angles in order to provide the output speed. A Mamdani-type FLC is implemented for the 2-dOF HS. The inputs of FLC are position error and rate of errors. The FLC is developed to give accurate results in terms of time domain specifications compared to PId and cascade controllers. All controllers have been established in MATLAB/ SIMULINK to test their control performance. According to the obtained simulation results, the FLC returns accurate control results, and robustness to eliminate the external disturbances. © 2023 IEEE.

As the key indicators to evaluate drilling efficiency, mechanical rate of penetration (rOP) and mechanical specific energy (MSE) are affected by many uncertain factors. In the actual drilling process, it is often necessary to adjust the parameters to achieve speed and efficiency. A dual-objective model is established considering the maximization of rOP and the minimization of MSE. Which combined with the theory of mechanical specific energy and the principle of multi-objective optimization, the model parameter weights are determined by the feature importance in the random forest regression model, and the value range of rock breaking parameter is optimized, realize the fusion of physical model and data model. The results show that, in the four strata of well X, the average rOP of T2k1 stratum is increased by 48.6% and the average MSE is decreased by 26.6%, the average rOP of T1b3 stratum is increased by 89.9% and the average MSE is decreased by 33.8%, the average rOP of the T1b2 stratum was increased by 41.3% and the average MSE was decreased by 39.0%, the average rOP of the T1b1 stratum was increased by 29.2% and the average MSE was decreased by 37.3%, which met the dual objectives of maximizing the rOP and minimizing the MSE. Compared with the traditional single-objective optimization method, the established dual-objective model is more in line with the needs of complex drilling engineering, and the fusion of physical model and data model can reduce certain human error. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing.
