The dual sideband optical carrier suppression (dSB-OCS) technique is characterised for its performance in order to be used as a carrier for 1.25Gbps OOK signal in the 40GHz radio over fibre (rOF) system. A dual electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (dE-MZM) and the minimum transmission bias (MiTB) technique are employed to build the system. The results show that, a 40GHz carrier is successfully generated with the amplitude up to -29dBm and SNr of 35dB. Finally, an error free 40GHz rOF system is constructed with almost no penalty between the back to back and 20km fibre for a BEr of 10 -9 .

Solar energy could become the most attractive alternative energy source. In this study we test an attractive new candidate material for solar energy collectors. It can be found that the higher the gas pressure is, the higher the sp2/sp3 area ratio, the greater the sputtering rate and the greater the optical absorption. The photothermal conversion efficiency of a SiO2 coating on the amorphous diamond-like carbon (a-dLC) selective absorber films deposited on the Cr/mirror like Al substrate is 93.2% as the film thickness of a SiO2 coating is 105 nm. The coatings also increase the protective properties for a longer service life. This makes the SiO2 coated a-dLC film a promising new candidate material for solar selective absorber films. The SiO2/a-dLC selective absorber films also were deposited on the Al extrusion substrates.

We measured the profiles of the trapped field, B T, on a thin Gd-Ba-Cu-O superconducting bulk plate with 45 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness magnetized by the pulsed field, where Gd-Ba-Cu-O consists of a superconducting matrix phase of GdBa2Cu3O7−δ and a nonsuperconducting secondary phase of Gd2BaCuO5. The vortices were mainly trapped at the periphery in the growth sectorregions (GSrs) for low applied fields, and around the growth sector boundaries (GSBs) and under the seed crystal (SC) position for high applied fields. The irreversibility line, which was determined from the resistivity measurements, of the sample cut from the GSr was rather lower than those of the samples cut from the GSBs and the SC position. This result revealed the weak vortex pinning strength in the GSrs and was consistent with the B T profiles by PFM. The obtainedresults suggest that the resistivity can also probe the distribution of the vortex pinning strength.

The mobile phone antennas exhibit a very low real impedance value especially in lower LTE (698-787MHz) and GSM (824-960MHz) bands, since the antennas are electrically small compared to operating wavelengths at these bands. Obtaining sufficiently low reflection coefficient and high TrP in a considerable bandwidth from such an antenna is very challenging without exciting proper currents on the PCB of the device. So the main trend for mobile handset antennas has moved toward using an electrically-small coupler plate to excite those PCB currents. In this way, the input impedance of the coupling element-chassis combination has a relatively high real part and the quality factor of the system is now much more lower than traditional resonant antennas, enabling higher bandwidth potential with the help of a proper matching network. In this paper, this approach is followed to cover lower LTE (698787MHz) and GSM (824-960MHz) standards with a novel hollow coupling element antenna while keeping space available around and inside the antenna, for additional components or even another higher band antenna (dCS/PCS and UMTS).

Homoepitaxial growth on 4H-SiC Si-face substrates with sizes corresponding to 150 mm was carried out. The influence of growth conditions for uniformity and epitaxial defect density was investigated. A 150 mm size was realized by using two 76.2 mm wafers lined up in a radial direction. C/Si ratio is found to be a major parameter for controlling triangulardefect density and the generation of step bunching. As a result, the surface morphology without bunched step structure and the triangulardefect density with 0.5 cm−2 were obtained by decreasing C/Si ratio to 1.0 on the size corresponding to 150 mm. Under this condition, good carrier concentration and thickness uniformity of σ/mean =15.2 % and 1.7 % could be obtained.

40GHz radio over fibre (rOF) downlink system is constructed to demonstrate Hd video transmission capability using the hybrid optical and wireless system. The dual-sideband optical carrier suppression (dSB-OCS) technique is used in conjunction with the minimum transmission bias (MiTB) to generate optical millimetre wave signal by utilizing a dual electrode Mach-Zehnder modulator (dE-MZM). A baseband high definition (Hd) video signal is modulated into the system via a second MZM. The signal is distributed to a remote antenna unit (rAU) using a 20km optical fibre, then transmitted wirelessly to a customer premise equipment (CPE) located at 5m away. The results show that the Hd video is successfully transmitted over the error free 40GHz rOF downlink system.

Modified TiO2 films have been prepared by combining commercial titania powders (degussa P25) with sol-gel made by titanium chloride (Ti-sol). The result shows that clusters are formed by nanoparticles and large pores can be seen on the surface of the TiO2 films. The short circuit photocurrent density and photoelectric conversion efficiency of the solar cells are obviously enhanced compared with those without modification. The relationship between the photoelectric conversion efficiency and the amount of Ti-sol was investigated. With the addition of 30 wt% Ti-sol, the photoelectric conversion efficiency as high as 9.75% is achieved, increasing by 28.3% compared with the solar cells without modification.
