In online discussions, individual contributions directly influence group performance and the deep analysis on individual level could be used to explain what happens within groups. However, measuring individual contributions in online collaborative discussion is a complex task due to the variety of elements and factors. The purpose of this study is to provide a framework to measure individual contributions in online collaborative discussions using quantitative methods both from knowledge content and participation behaviors. Then the framework is validated by an empirical study. Moreover, we visualize the information of individual contributions to give a direct observation for teachers.

As an important part of educational data mining,learning analytics has drawn extensive attention among international scholars since it was *** further explore the research topic of learning analytics,this paper,which bases on the data containing 674 documents on learning analytics between 2010 and 2015 from Web of Science,explores and reveals the international research status about learning *** the process of that,we adopt a variety of analysis tools and visualization technology to analyze the high cited documents,the distribution of core authors,high prolific institutions and high frequency ***,on the basis of high frequency keywords dissimilarity matrix,we further clarify the research scope by the means of cluster ***,by mapping out the strategic diagram graph,the trend of the development orientation of learning analytics is further clarified in order to provide reference and suggestions for international research and practice on learning analytics.

Towards better understanding of hot topics in online learning communities

Online learning communities provide open workspaces allowing learners to share information, exchange ideas, address problems and discuss on specific themes. But with the continuously increasing artifacts in online communities, learners feel it difficult to quickly and easily gain an insight into a certain theme. To facilitate and support learners have a better understanding of the communication focus, this paper presents an approach to discover the hot topics and patterns of topics evolutions in online learning communities. Firstly, hot terms are extracted based on three features: the frequency of the terms used in the document collection;the location of the terms within a document;the breadth of terms distribution in the document collection. Then a term association network is constructed by computing the terms co-occurrence and distance between them. Finally, an algorithm is proposed to select the kernel term and its associated terms as term clusters to represent the hot topics with multi-facets expression. Two case studies on real datasets are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of term cluster in helping users better understand hot topics in online learning communities. Potential applications in learning scenarios are also discussed. © 2015, Li et al.

Online learning communities have become an important place serving informal learning due to the prevalence of online social networking services during the past few years. This paper proposes a social analytics framework aiming to boost recommendation service catering for the different learning demands of learners. Based on the traditional collaborative filtering approach, this study focuses on constructing topic-specific user credibility network by considering social relations and user behaviors. Both direct and indirect connections evidence from social analytics provide complementary information to construct user trust network. regarding the topic-specific user credibility network, two features including influence and expertise are also computed to refine the credibility value between users. Furthermore, the performances of learners were further investigated in terms of longevity and centrality that could be referred when selecting suitable people for recommendation.

Technology rich classroom (TrC) is of great importance to learning and teaching in information era. In the past decades, a large amount of money has been invested to the construction of the TrC all over the world. However, few have been written on the assessment of user experience in TrC. The user experiences of the teacher and student are lack of research. Thus, the aim of this paper is (i) to describe the elements of user experience in the TrC in a systemic way, (ii) to develop an inventory as a tool to measure classroom environment quality, (iii) and to determine the relationship between user experience and learning attitudes, interests, and learning satisfaction.

The cohesive collective motion (flocking, swarming) of autonomous agents is ubiquitously observed and exploited in both natural and man-made settings, thus, minimal models for its description are essential. In a model with continuous space and time we find that if two particles arrive symmetrically in a plane at a large angle, then (i) radial repulsion and (ii) linear self-propelling toward a fixed preferred speed are sufficient for them to depart at a smaller angle. For this local gain of momentum explicit velocity alignment is not necessary, nor are adhesion or attraction, inelasticity or anisotropy of the particles, or nonlinear drag. With many particles obeying these microscopic rules of motion we find that their spatial confinement to a square with periodic boundaries (which is an indirect form of attraction) leads to stable macroscopic ordering. As a function of the strength of added noise we see—at finite system sizes—a critical slowing down close to the order-disorder boundary and a discontinuous transition. After varying the density of particles at constant system size and varying the size of the system with constant particle density we predict that in the infinite system size (or density) limit the hysteresis loop disappears and the transition becomes continuous. We note that animals, humans, drones, etc., tend to move asynchronously and are often more responsive to motion than positions. Thus, for them velocity-based continuous models can provide higher precision than coordinate-based models. An additional characteristic and realistic feature of the model is that convergence to the ordered state is fastest at a finite density, which is in contrast to models applying (discontinuous) explicit velocity alignments and discretized time. To summarize, we find that the investigated model can provide a minimal description of flocking.

Nowadays concept maps (CMs) are widely used in many fields and there are many tools assisting users in constructing a CM. Nevertheless, some users may also have difficulties in extracting a CM from a text. To cope with this problem, an intelligent interactive tool for scaffolding concept map construction is proposed to assist users in CM construction. A preliminary experiment has been conducted to evaluate the efficiency of this tool. The experimental results show that the proposed tool has some beneficial effects on helping users construct a CM. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

researchers have found that classroom environment has close relationship to students' learning performance. When considering technology enriched classroom environment, researches are mainly on the psychological environment and the measurement of the environment. While as technology integrated in classroom, the physical classroom environment should be investigated to facilitate students' effective and engaged learning. First we carry out a survey on the current technology enriched classroom, after that we sample the Technology Involved Classroom (TIC) and Technology Uninvolved Classroom (TUC) to compare the differences between the two kinds of classroom;then we do the classroom observation and interview with teachers;finally based on the analysis of these data, we propose some solutions for optimizing the classroom environment to facilitate technology enriched learning in China. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The negatively charged silicon-vacancy (SiV−) center in diamond is a promising single-photon source for quantum communications and information processing. However, the center's implementation in such quantum technologies is hindered by contention surrounding its fundamental properties. Here we present optical polarization measurements of single centers in bulk diamond that resolve this state of contention and establish that the center has a 〈111〉 aligned split-vacancy structure with d3d symmetry. Furthermore, we identify an additional electronic level and evidence for the presence of dynamic Jahn-Teller effects in the center's 738-nm optical resonance.
